Locust Grove Cemetery - Long and narrow

    Locust Grove Cemetery

Lichen stones and…read moreold friends The Locust Grove Cemetery is a rather small graveyard located only a short distance from the Marginal Way and the ocean. It's very narrow but does have a bit of length to it. The old graveyard is certainly located in a lovely place. Ogunquit means, "the beautiful place by the sea" in the local Abenaki language and the natives definitely got it right. The graveyard isn't especially old by Maine standards, I didn't see any older than the early 1800's and many were much newer. This is still a cemetery that is taking in new arrivals. Since it is so close to the ocean it gets hammered by strong winds and salt and many of the older stones have lots of that funky yellow lichen stuff that seems to love to grow on gravestones. Definitely gives the memorials a worn and spooky look. Many of the gravestones are unique and as I was walking at dusk toward the back of the long and narrow cemetery I noticed a large German Shepard staring at me. Never a good thing to have a large dog staring at you and this one was frozen as if he was about to attack and take a big bite out of my arse. Turned out that dog was Max and he wasn't real but was a memorial to a man's faithful and loyal friend. The man had his own grave nearby and I guess he wanted Max there with him for eternity. Max was standing next to a really cool bench with his name on it. Not a huge cemetery and not one that isn't shockingly old but a lovely and beautiful place to spend some time. Preferably above ground but being buried here wouldn't be so bad either. Nice to spend eternity with friends.
