My husband Don and I had a wonderful experience on the Ocean Odyssey. I couldn't recommend them enough! Food was included and top notch. Snacks and sodas always available. $5 beers?! (Just like a cruise-ship we ate too much!!). Adam and Ronnie were super helpful and so pleasant in the galley. (Would love that ceviche and tartar sauce recipe!). I was so impressed how the deck hands kept everything so meticulously clean. I appreciated that Chris and Alan were so patient and non judgmental for us rookies. Chris was so encouraging to me after I was starting to get frustrated. The bunks were super clean, as they provided a clean blanket and pillow. Captain Rick really tried to find the good spots. Met the nicest people on the boat, especially "girl Dad" and his young daughter. Great memories were made and we can't wait for the next trip!!! Keep up the good work guys! read more

Choppy waters. Dizzy from the swaying of the boat. Foggy cloud cover. IT WAS AMAZING!! None of that was the fault of the boat crew. That's just fishing. Sometimes the weather and ocean are your friend and sometimes you forget to take your Bonine. Got there late because I had to work. The boat left at 11am. What can I say? Gotta pay for these trips somehow. The landing sent me right down to the boat which has already boarded. Sooooooo. I couldn't get the middle bunk I wanted. Again, my fault. So I chose the bunk that was the escape hatch. Let's face it. If I can't get the bunk I want, I'm gonna get the bunk I can escape from. What? Mamma didn't raise no fools. The cook prepared some very delicious hot snacks for us to enjoy on the way down. Home made chocolate chip cookies. It was all I could do to not take one. They smelled sooooo good. But I stuck to my Keto. We stopped just past the Coronado Islands for some fishing. It was awesome. But as great as the fishing was, we knew it was only a prelude to what we were gonna hit at Colonet. By the way, have I mentioned how awesome everybody on the boat was. I mean, not just the crew, but even all of the passengers were amazing. What a great bunch of anglers on this boat. That doesn't always happen. If you fish as much as I do, you know that doesn't always happen. After a fun day of fishing catching ling cods and big reds and other assorted rock fish, the cook made an amazing shrimp fettuccine that made my mouth water. Again, damn Keto, I had the salad. No worries. I planned for this and had in tow my own food I could enjoy. Saturday we hit the bottom early and the fish did not disappoint. They showed up and ling cods bigger than anything I had ever seen were biting. MY GOD these things were huge. The same for the reds, groupers, white fish and other bottom dwellers. Then we heard about some yellow tail. I thought nothing of it because they were scarce; but this captain found them. They hit. It was awesome. We continued to look and then out of the blue, huge tuna! They were boiling right next to the boat! Well, we saw them but nobody was ready for those. Nobody had the gear as these were upward of 100 pounds and we came for rock fishing. Shhhhh. Don't tell nobody. I had the right gear. But after pulling up rock cod from 200, 300, 400, 500, 600 and even drifted to 700 feet, I didn't even wanna try. My arms were killing me. Great trip. Great way to start the year. read more

Finally a day of fishing. One of my clients chartered a boat here on the Ocean Odyssey and it was for a great cause. To raise money for cancer. Got here and hung out the local tackle shops at H & M and finally boarded on the trip with 28 other avid fishermen/women. Great stories told among many new friends and many future (non-fictional) stories to be told by others after when we return back to the working race. Nice, friendly staff, very clean vessel, and all you can drink sodas! Killer breakfast burritos and decent grub overall. Captain was aggresive in trying to find hotspots but the fish gods were taking the day off as there were many lost fishes and not one fishing frenzy. The deckhands were unfortunately on the so-so side as they were not as skilled as some deckhands Ive seen in my fishing experience. I was lucky enough to catch one fish, a 23+ lb yellowtail, and out of 11 total that were caught, this one was really special as not only it took the jackpot, its the first of many to feed my hungry family. The company I work for booked a two-day fishing trip aboard the Ocean Odyssey and what started as a great idea ended up being a phenomenal, off-the-charts fishing experience! The boat is clean and obviously well-run and maintained. Most of us were rookies when it came to ocean fishing but Capt Rick was patient and thorough and gave us a useful tutorial. The crew was very helpful, never judgmental when our reels got tangled and always got us back on track. When it was all said and done, we got on top of a school of yellowtail and maxed out our daily limit within an hour and a half. I walked off with over 30lbs of filets and unforgettable memories. Second time on this boat and have been on many others out of San Deigo. Just got back from a great 2.5 day. The boat limited out on Bluefin!! Also lots of Yellowtail. Capt Rick was wonderful and is very hands on. He got us to the fish and made sure everyone had a chance to hook up and get some fish. The crew was hard working and very friendly. Good food. The expert anglers were very happy and the beginners were given the kind of help they needed to make it a great experience. My nephew flew in from Denver and it was a great first trip for him---- he is hooked and was impressed about how well he was treated by Capt Rick and all the crew. They did all they could to make it fun and not make him feel left out. You will not be disappointed with Capt Rick and the Ocean Odyssey. read more

I could sit here and blast these folks for a bunch of shortcomings. But I won't drone on. If you want to catch fish and be treated like your money and patronage mean something, go elsewhere. Rude and offensive employees, bad food, dirty sleeping quarters, and very poor management are the order of the day here. Do your research and go where you're more than just part of the "cattle call". So, this was about 2019 October yellowfin were on the run so me, my dad and my brother in law wanted to take my brother on his first tuna trip so we take him out. When we got there cause we were there 2 hrs early we wanted to go get jack in the box across the street and abs look at the other landings so we seen the captain walk pass us and we asked him if we can put our stuff on the boat and he told us " no you guys can wait" we were like okay?? But we didn't let it bother us so I went to go get jack in the box for all of us then we get on the boat check in and other bullshit then it's time for seminar all of us are in the galley and there 3 guys talking near the bait tank he told them to come in once he asked and he told everyone "ok you guys don't want a fucking seminar fine with me" we were like everyone was basically in here so we get to fishing the next day we fishing small yellows so my brother hooks his first yellowtail ever but remember he has never ocean fish so he does not know how to bounce a fish . So my brother catches a yellow and ask for a gaff and says you can bounce it and he tried and snapped so we got into skipjack same thing you can bounce it and snapped 4 of the 6 skipjack her bounced so my dad saw him hook a yellowtail again and yelled across the boat you better gaff that yellowtail that's his first and they said" we don't want blood on our deck " so we were like unbelievable. So it's dinner time every passenger was kinda upset about the trip so we had pork chops and rice and vegetables so this one lady said" can you take a little rice off I don't want that much can you safe it for someone else. And the cook said " there's a trash can there you fucking throw it away if you don't want it". So we dock up the next morning the cook apologizes about the night before then the captain get in my uncles face cause my uncle was saying how bad the trip was and the captain said if you don't like I want you on my boat and told us to get the fuck out. What a great Skipper Rick was! My husband and I did a 1 1/2 day trip last week and we caught limits of Yellowfin and Yellowtail! The crew was excellent! The deckhands were there to assist at all times! Rick the skipper came and threw my line out several times to help me get hooked up as I think they knew it was my first Tuna trip! Spacious, but bad attitudes from crew & captain. When we checked onboard, right off the bat, the deckhands starting criticizing and laughing at me for bringing too much tackle and gear, I was offended. Then when the fish were biting, the deckhands were very lazy, i had two small yellowfin wrapped up in other lines for over 10 minutes while I untangled them myself, on other boats with way more action, the deckhands are right on the spot either untangling or cutting the other lines, but not with these guys. Fortunately I saved both of my small yellowfin, but my son lost about 5 fish due to this. They also didn't remind us to shuffle to the right, myself and the other passengers were doing this for them all day. Then at the end during tally up, they charged me $25 for my sons filets, I asked the deckhand if my son had caught 5 fish & he replied yes, so I woke up my son and asked him, he replied that he only caught 1 fish all day, so I went and got my $20 back they basically tried to steal from me, that after my $50 tip, geeze. Plus the boat is really big & spacious, which is nice, but it's very slow & top heavy, which makes it rock quite a bit, & the captain seems to have a bad attitude also. I did like the temp. cook though, food was great, he was super cool, & his tally numbers were spot on, I would give him 5 stars! If only he was the captain & the rest of the crew were like him, lol. read more

Perfect experience. The captain is a bit surly, but I think that's what a captain is supposed to be. He is also very clearly experienced and extremely effective. He also keeps a very professional atmosphere on board with his crew. These guys really know what they are doing. They gave us a perfect brief of how to fish, how to communicate, and how to work together as a boat with 25 anglers on it for three days. This was my first time going out for yellowtail, and it took me about a half a day to get through the learning curve. The crew did a really great job of helping me figure it out and was very willing to answer any questions I had. The boat caught their limit of Dorado by the 2nd day, and everyone had plenty of yellowtail by the end. I think I caught about 10 fish all told. They have an amazing new chef, and the food was both a diverse menu and delicious. Cornish game hen and prime rib for dinner, pretty much anything you want for breakfast on request, taco bar for lunch. I would definitely go out on this boat again. read more

I fish ALOT and on alot of different boats from Santa Barbara to San Diego. I have ridden the Ocean Odyssey several times from 1 1/2 day to 2 1/2 day trips. I prefer 2 1/2 because it gives the the Capt more time to find fish. Fish have a tendancy to move(duh) especially tuna. I try to get in line early to get a decent bunk. Only a few times, due to the boat just getting in did we have to wait until it was cleaned. Management has a lady that cleans the bunk room , so where the dirty bunk room comment comes from, I have no clue. The food is pretty good. I don't like red meat, so I ask the cook for well done, and I got it well done. All the free sodas and coffee you want. You only pay for beer and bottled water. You wont go hungry! I have never had an issue with the crew. They will tie your hooks on, splice your line if needed set your drag and talk you through your hook up . There is a seminar prior to departure. This is my second year back in Cali and second year fishing tuna. I would advise anyone, no matter what boat you ride, LISTEN TO THE CREW. They want you to catch fish!!! Good counts result in more people fishing. I was so fortunate to get a limit of fat bluefin. People ask me what was I doing. Simple answer...listen to the crew. On one trip, the Capt was on the stern lining people up (that were having problems) , hooking fish and passing off the rod. Like any business, if an employee has an attitude or poor customer service, inform management. I am a Disabled vet, management has made accommodations for me when requested. A friend that I fish with, rode the boat with me. He was left disabled due to a shoot out in the line of duty. He was having problems landing a hefty Bluefin, the crew stepped right in and helped him out. The Capt on this boat is not afraid to burn Fuel. A fishing boat owner can control how clean it is. It can control the food you eat. It can control customer service. And the management of this operation does that well. The only variable(s) they cant control is making fish bite or keeping them(fish) from moving( again duh). I ride enough boats to know bad operations from good ones and all I have to say is that I will be booking several 2 1/2 - 3 day trips for the 2014 season. I have been fishing the San Diego fleet for 20 years. There have been a lot of changes, etc. which is obvious. I must say that the Ocean Odyssey or O2 as we call her has been the best for our short 2.5 day warmup trips before we go LR for the last 3 years. Captain Rick is awesome - treats you well and not treat you like a kid (like a Captain on another boat we went on last year and will be the last time). The crew members are AWESOME! Most accurate at gaffing and coaching / motivating you when you're in for a long fight! I had a fight on going an hour, and they brought water, etc to keep me from passing out. Yes the Jackpot fish was landed. Their actions speak louder than words. Dave, the Chef is a virtuoso at meal preparation. I always have to request a smaller portion to prevent waste. Now Capt. Dina which runs the front office is fantastic as always. I had to reschedule a trip and she took care of it in less than an hour. Outstanding job O2! See u guys Aug 2016. read more

After 20 years fishing with the San Diego fishing fleet, I can honestly say I've found the worst boat. I unfortunately spent 3 days on the boat fishing tuna. The fishing was a little tough, but the captain was bad mouthing all the passengers because no one was excited about killing 3-5 pound tuna. The poor treatment of the customers seemed to be a common practice as the cook and mates were also rude. The mates would gaff fish, then all customers were expected to put a tag on the fish and carry it to the kill box. Why are we doing this? To top off a horrible experience, we sat outside the harbor cleaning fish because the captain had not let the crew clean fish when they were supposed to. This resulted in the boat hitting the docks 90 minutes late and me missing my flight. This was my first experience with H&M landing. I will stay away as the experience from check-in to landing was poor. The other three landing will keep my business from now on. Stay away from the Ocean Odyssey unless you like being abused. read more

2 1/2 day trip south of the boarder!!!!!!!!! My wife&I go on the Ocean Odyssey every year with spectacular results every year,each year we make new friends,so we all meet up this 2 1/2 day trip. Captain's Rick&Scooter,and outstanding crew,Desi,Kevin,Dave the chef,assistant chef.Helped everyone get settled in.Wehad the same tuna talk for the new guys,picked up some great looking sardines,and headed south.The last week in July fishing north of the boarder was hard&scratchy; at best 1 1/2 fish per day. Captain Rick had a hot tip,big yellowtail&big dorado at 160 mile's moving north with tuna in the mix.All fishermen on the boat were ready,you could feel the tension building.. Our first stop was game on like super bowl Sunday. Yellowtail from 18 to 30 Lbs, Dorado 18 to 35 lbs, the whole trip was like this,and fishing hanging into the evening hours till the last day,limits of fat yellowtail&Dorado&Tuna.
