As a big…read morefan of greengrocers as a means of stocking up on fruit and veg for the week, I was most impressed with Neil's. Of all the greengrocers I have seen, I have never once comented on a beautiful display. Normally, it comes part and parcel of having a fruit and veg shop, and the produce is just stacked up, without having had much thought put into it. Neil's however is the exception. With carrots fanned out and everything looking perfect in its place, thought has evidentally gone int every inch of the stall, and quite frankly it is the most tempting fruit and veg stall I have ever seen! Fantastic. Prices are competitive, but not a patch on what you'd pay elsewhere.

This shop is large and literally contains everything you could need for a decent cook off, so avoid that nasty supermarket and walk that little bit extra to go to a decent fruiterers.

With red and green seedless grapes at 69p per lb, a sack of potatoes to feed the masses at £3.95, 8 clementines at 99p and even blooming duck eggs, for crying out loud, at 29p what could be more exciting and reasonably priced than R K Harris and the boys? I think my only option is going to be to check out if my local Headingley branch sells duck eggs, and start looking up some recipes. Yey!

Do you get too busy and tired to cook? Does packing in fresh veg become a strain? Are you sick of getting a take away, because at the end of the day it's easier than cooking? Have you lost the will to find new recipes to learn? Here's the secret: visit Cook. Basically, they're like the microwaveable meal kings. And, that sounds like a slight -but it's not. What: Home cooked, freshly frozen, deliciously healthy, wonderfully diverse meals. Frozen in a little microwavable/oven cook tray for you to bob in and eat. Honestly, I was so overly impressed with what they had to offer. The chap in the shop was, for starters, an absolute star. He introduced me to the ideals behind the franchise, and where it came from, talked me through all of the products on offer and we basically ended up having a lovely natter. There are huge packed fridges, filled to the brim with delicious meals, in a range of sizes and cuisines. Everything from Thai red curry, to chilli con carne, to Indian dishes and some other items that were so exotic I've forgotten what they're even called. It really is a place of solution, especially if you're often tired and end up relying on substandard ready meals. They've also a range of desserts, drinks and other such edibles to browse, so I ended up grabbing a Thai curry, chilli and banoffee pie. I've had the chilli and it was just epic. The flavours were fantastic, and went perfectly with the veggie rice, and all for 5 minutes of microwave time. Of course, the washing up was cut down dramatically, so I almost felt a little lost after eating as there was so little to do. The prices are reasonable, perhaps not for a complete eating solution compared to home cooking, but certainly for when you're in a pinch and don't want to eat crud baked in oil, that's been greased up a little. Basically, I've not known such excellent customer service from the wonderful chap in the shop, and never known anything that I've put in a microwave taste edible, let alone that gourmet. You really should get down there and see what's cookin'. And on that note, I'm off to eat my dessert. Sucks to be you - you don't have Banoffee goodness!

If, like me, you ever struggle to choose between about three sandwhich options then you may be liable to be frozen in cant-decide panic at the endless choices presented to you by Abu Bakar! Even the halva section appears to be never ending! They sell a wide selection of vegetables, a broad variety of juices, endless rows of pulses, spices, herbs, cakes, bread, jars of pickled items, huge sacks of rice and flour - possibly aimed at businesses but may be handy if you live in a big house, loads of condiments (including some very mysterious and tantalising items such as a pot of chololate and cherry something...spread?...whose ingredients list was in Polish only). Homeware-wise they have pots, pans, crockery and kitchen utensils. There is also a halal meat counter. As Susan mentions, Abu Bakar is aimed at the Aisian community, but for anyone like me with boringly British culinary habits it is a fascinating and exciting place of endless possibilities and obscure and intriguing ingredients.

It offers a pretty impressive selection of fresh fruit and veg, some of which is local, and all of which is more appealing than that which is on offer just up the road in Morrisons. It will probably cost you more per item than the supermarket, but for those people who like to feel, admire and choose their own groceries, this is a small price to pay.

I have never tasted apples like the ones this local independent and trust worthy shop has to offer, and there is always locally grown seasonal produce. Matthew always makes the effort to find fresh produce that has been grown within 50 miles of his shop and labels them for all his customers to see. An added bonus is if there is something particular you are after, all you have to do is ask and the next day you have the best quality of it! There is a free delivery service if you cant carry your 10lb of spuds and carrots etc home with you or if you cant get to the shop at all which is fab for the older generation. They are a proper fruit and veg place with the stacks of goodies out front to lure you in and a huge array of produce inside under bright, but a nice glowing type lighting. They sell all kinds of English vegetables and fruits plus a few more exotic types to boost your vitamin C intake. I was really pleased to find it whilst walking through the cold, and feeling in need of some nutrients. I purchased a bag of about 15 apples for £1 and eyed up the flowers loads while I paid. I don't have anyone to buy flowers for, and by the time the lovely girl at the counter had processed my purchase I still hadn't justified buying flowers for myself and walked out. Silly girl. I should have done! They would have looked lovely in a nice vase. Next time I will. When I called up today to check their opening times I spoke to a very lovely guy with the thickest Leeds accent ever who said "Seven over five love" Lovely lovely lovely! The greengrocers offer a wide range of fruits and vegetables, fresh flowers and bulbs. The store is a busy one that competes well against Tesco, Morrison's and now Sainsbury's and is popular with the locals. As local's ourselves we try to shop outside the supermarkets as much as possible and now and with the credit crunch it's really worth comparing the prices. William Ellis are always a few pennies cheaper per item than the supermarkets but when you are buying the weekly fruit and vegetables is really adds up.

A few were lined up on the two tables outside of the shop. It was a beautiful day and with the lovely colours of the flowers, it put me a thoroughly good mood. It wasn't until I went into the shop to buy one of these pots that I realised in the seasonal absence of flowers this was a traditional green grocers. With supermarkets buying up every available space its not so common to see a shop selling just fruit and vegetables these days. Although there were a few eggs and bottles of milk for sale also, sourced from a local farm, I noticed from the label. The inside of the store was a pleasing to the eye as the outside, with the large colourful array of foods spread out neatly.
