Funny, but beside the point. The point is, Miller Fish & Chips used to have this rep as being the best around. As it goes with all such title holders, the quality invariably deteriorates and before long, they are pretty much the shittest around but still holding on to those 'best of' prices. Enter new owners about four months ago. These new people actually seemed to give a toss about service and revamped the menu to incorporate all these 'meal deal' type combinations. Things were looking up, but as you can tell by my usage of the past tense, this wasn't to last. They were good for a spell and I even started to use them pretty regularly for takeaway delights until last week when a phone order I lodged was misinterpreted as something completely different. When I told the woman she'd duffed my order (I had read the thing straight off of the pink menu, so I was in the right for once), she looked like she wanted to spit at me. Sure, she righted the wrong and straightened the deal, but the damage is done. A certain amount of knowledge of your own menu should be a given in hospitality me thinks, as should be a little customer service.

It came with fish chips a scallop a crab stick a shrimp and two calamari rings- all for 12.70 - can't be beat really - The crab stick was good - for imitation crab- the scallop needs to be defrosted and salted before frying to cut down on the liquid that makes the breading soggy - the calamari rings were ??? Odd- the fish was ok the chips were pretty good- but to the devil if can't get chips right- I have no idea about the shrimp as my 9 year old claimed it with the lighting speed movements resembling a ninja - I could ask him but I don't truly trust his palate as he still likes sprinkles on ice cream - one little note for my friends at Millers - give a bit of tomato sauce with your food - anything that enhances the flavor of your food helps you in the long run !!

Having been frequenting this place for about five years now, I've never had a dud experience with either the staff or the food here. The fare is standard old-style fish and chips with no pomp or bluster and I love them for that fact alone. They don't try and force manky day-old salads at you, nor do they quibble over a small order. And they do a kid's pack! It fuckin' rules. It's got a small fish and a dimmy and some chips for under a fiver! You won't get that anywhere around these parts these days. In fact, all their deals on the back of the takeaway menu are super good. If there's a gripe to be found here is that they (along with almost every chipper in town) still serve flake as 'flake' rather than labelling it as shark for the dummies. It's a small blemish on an otherwise awesome business however. Their burgers are tops too.

However, since I was down in the area for a gaming club, I thought that stopping by for some fish and chips might be appropriate. Yep, they certainly meet the benchmark.

It's certainly not one of the new breed of fish and chip shops that are trying to be healthy, fancy and slightly upmarket (yes I'm looking at you Hooked!). But when you go in the counter just looks really appealing - it's full of the freshest fish and you have a range of options to choose from. We got a battered piece, a grilled piece and some pieces of battered calamari. Unlike many fish and chip shops they don't overdo it on the batter. You can still actually taste the fish and it is very good. The chips are pretty damn good too. And overall it wasn't too pricy whatsoever. It's a shame there isn't a Saltwater Grill near me or an equivalent, because I would be eating there a lot.

While driving to the place we had chosen, we encountered a big 'Fish and Chips' sign and decided this was fate calling our name. It turns out fate was probably hungover from the night before and had lead us astray. We ordered a deal consisting of two flakes, potato cakes and chips. I also asked for some onion rings, which seemed like a great idea at the time. They have no eftpos facilities, so I took a stroll five minutes down to road to the nearest ATM. The price was similar to other fish and chip shops and tartare sauce was complimentary (a plus!) Once we arrived home to eat our fish and chips, we opened the butchers paper in which it had been wrapped. The fish and chips were soggy, covered in oil and smelt strange. Hunger got the best of me and I ate almost everything in my meal - although there were a fair few chips left over. The onion rings were terrible. Sliced onion covered in thick batter and a layer of oil. I felt about 10 kilos heavier after eating my meal. I am in no hurry to go back.

After many years of living in Fitzroy, and a lot of disappointing fish and chips, I finally found a…read morereliable fish and chip shop in East Melbourne (Kiwi Fish and Chip). Their fish was fresh, batter crisp and chips perfect. Unfortunately now that we live in Brunswick, East Melbourne is a long way to go when the craving for F&Cs hits. So a new search began. There was a recent article in Time Out about the best F&Cs in town and lo and behold, one of them was close-ish to us. This is Union Square Fish and Chips. Therefore it was essential that this place had to be sampled. So, whilst the wife was away off I went to get the 'old school fish and chips of my childhood' (so the article says). I went for a basic battered Flake with a 'small' chips. Lucky I didn't have the medium or large chips as there were hundreds of them in the min size! OK the fish was cooked OK and the batter was not too bad and there was a copious quantity of chips. Overall review: it was alright. Nothing to go 'wow' about but not bad either, just alright. Will I go back? Probably not. I think the search for the holy grail of take away fish and chips in the Brunswick area will continue elsewhere. Once you've had the fish and chips at the Terminus in North Fitzroy it's hard to accept lesser specimens. Oh, they also sell Burgers and Souvlaki (Union Square that is).
