Jin Sung is an amazing teacher, truly dedicated to his craft. He has a keen eye and zones in carefully to where adjustments are needed for every student in the class. His dog, Teddy is so cute, and a nice addition to the class. I always leave feeling lighter and looser. On Sundays, he offers the beginners class suitable for anyone whether they have experience or not. I've been to many yoga studios, and they don't always pay attention to you or your form. Jin Sun will make sure you are doing the asanas correctly. read more

I honestly think this is the best place for yoga in the east bay. JinSung is an amazing teacher and will truly help your practice no matter what stage you are at in your journey. As others have said, this is not jazzercise yoga. This is a true yoga practice - spending time in each pose. On top of JinSung being an amazing teacher, the studio is spacious and beautiful with ropes on the walls. Honestly, having a studio and a teacher this good is an absolute gift. If you haven't been to one of these classes yet - you may truly be missing the best opportunity. read more

JinSung has recently purchased special elastic resistance belts (the closest equivalent might be the springs used in a Pilates reformer), and has fully incorporated them into asana. No other local yoga class offers this, and the effect is, you will get much stronger - and gain that strength quicker - than anywhere else. Also, unlike most other yoga classes, JinSung also routinely incorporates and intelligently builds up to handstand, headstand, and wheel in his sequencing. This is different than most yoga classes, which often treat inversions as an afterthought. read more

This is the real deal. Not jazzercise with asana taught by a twenty two year old. Each posture is taught from the base of balance, strength and integrity. You will leave the class an inch (or two) taller and more centered read more

*DISCLAIMER* I just got back from my first class at this studio, so this is written under the influence of yoga induced endorphins...... The studio is undergoing some renovations, so the full floor isn't available. Despite that, this is still a welcome addition to the Bay Area yoga scene. The instructor didn't have his own mat, he walked through the class and called out the poses and gently corrected people. I've been to other studios where i felt oogy when the instructor touched me, but here, I didn't feel like he was touching me inappropriately. This studio has a strong core group of students who know each other, but they were welcoming to this newcomer! The students have a variety of body types, which is a change from some studios which seem to only have uber fit types. Be warned, there was some group work.....my partner said to me "just go ahead and put your hand in my crotch"........... So I did.... But usually I like to get to know someone better before I put my hand in their crotch. I expect dinner and drinks before I put my hand in someone's crotch. Don't go to this studio if you're a yoga novice, or you don't want to stray from your own mat. I've been doing Yoga off and on for about 7 years, so I'm not a novice, but I don't always want my workout to involve contact with other people. But I will probably be going back. ETA.... Ok, I had to take away a star. As I described to several of my friends, I enjoy yoga, but most good yogis need a good business person to help run the practical aspects of the studio. Like a typical type A person, I checked the website www.oaklandyogastudio.com to check and see what classes were available, pre-packed a yoga bag and water bottle the night before, and stopped eating several hours before the start of the class. I rushed out the office and parked, and tried to go to the Wednesday 5:45 class, and the studio was locked up tight. That made me aggravated and angst filled, not calm the way yoga is supposed to make you feel!! The phone number provided on the website goes to Jin, not a front desk or anything centralized. Then I tried the Tuesday 5:45 class, and it was great! Unfortunately the teacher has since moved to China, I was in his last class. He also told me that the payment system is instructor specific. IE, if you pay for Jin's class series, you can't use that for any other instructor. That info should be clear on the website. Part of what makes purchasing a "series" beneficial is being able to take classes at different times to fit into your schedule. I hope that this studio gets it together in the next few months, because it is nice to have another yoga alternative in Oakland/Piedmont. It would also be nice if they indicated which classes involve partner work, because some days I am NOT in the mood for all the extra touchy feely granola-ness, I just want to do MY yoga on my own mat. read more

Iyengar yoga that won't make you cry. This is serious yoga for people who want to be intimate with their own body (and mind). There is no pretense of spirituality or attitude about what you wear. It's all about the body but who cares what body you arrive in! Jinsung is one of the best teachers in the area. Many of his classes are full of yoga teachers-- and not because they are 'hard' but because they are precise and deep. If you want to really learn that asana you have been doing for 4 years but no one ever explained how it is supposed to feel from the inside out this is the place for you. If you want serious yoga that doesn't take itself too seriously (and appreciate an oddball sense of humor!) this place is for you. Plus you can hang upside-down from straps any time! (who needs handstand!) read more

Jin Sung is the most brilliant yoga instructor I have come across in my 6 years of studying yoga in the Bay Area at many different studios. His knowledge of the body and use of language to elicit increased body awareness are simply astounding. He is so perceptive as to the subtlest of patterns in students' bodies that sometimes I wonder if he has x-ray vision. Also, I love his guided savasanas. At the end of each class, without using explicitly "spiritual" language, he is able to foster deep relaxation and what feels like a rejuvenation of the soul. A word for those not familiar with the Iyengar style. It's very therapeutic, and in my experience the best kind of yoga for anyone with any kind of injury or chronic condition, given that the instructors are super knowledgeable and you get to use props to provide deeper and more precise stretches than you would on your own. The best part is the inversions at the wall. You get to hang upside down from (comfortable) straps, suspend your spine, and ahhhh... release all the tension in your back. It's the best thing ever. Lastly, I appreciate Jin Sung's openness to meeting the needs of the students in the room. While, for instance, he guides us in partner work, students always have a choice as to whether they wish to participate. He also is a strong advocate of trusting your own body and coming out of poses sooner than later to prevent injuries. I wholeheartedly recommend Iyengar yoga and, in particular, Jin Sung's classes at the Oakland Yoga Studio for anyone seeking a class that will leave them with increased body awareness, a more centered and aligned body, help with an injury or other condition, and, most importantly, a calmer mind and spirit. read more

JinSung was recommended by a friend who's been practicing with him for years. He was not the waify, soft-spoken yoga teacher I expected. He's a down to earth guy with a ton of knowledge and a great ability to lead well-thought out, challenging classes. Every time you go, there's something new to explore with a pose. He doesn't let you get too comfortable with yourself and just when you think you've "got it", he'll mention something that opens up a whole new area of your body to explore, and so you are always pushing to improve. For each class he seems to pick a theme to work on (hip-opening, collar bone opening, inversions etc) and he'll gear the poses to emphasize that theme. He'll keep exploring it for several weeks sometimes, so if you're a regular, you really get a great benefit! He's very accommodating to different body types, and levels. The other students are friendly and his partner-poses help to foster a more relaxed atmosphere where you realize it's not a competition. I was a bit freaked out at touching other people's bodies at first, but it's not a big deal for me anymore, and actually I've come to appreciate how different we all are! One of my favorite things is that JinSung is so darned strong! So if he comes around and adjusts you in a pose, it's quite amazing what you didn't know you were capable of. I've seen a huge difference in just the year or so I've been going to him. And now my body craves yoga. For newcomers, it might take a while to understand his method of explaining things, but if you watch, absorb and try it out, your body will just naturally start to understand. read more

I went to Oakland Yoga Studio while on vacation in the Bay Area - I had asked around in DC about where to go from people who had done yoga retreats and such, and I heard great things about JinSung at Oakland Yoga Studio. It was really quite amazing - at first it took me a little while to figure out what he was talking about. I was thinking "I'm supposed to be able to feel my kidneys?" We moved on to do some work on down dog, which I have to admit has always felt strange to me, like I knew I wasn't doing it right. Well JinSung spotted it, walked over, and helped me figure out how to make it feel right. By the end of the class, even the kidney thing started making sense. It really changed the way I thought about yoga and improved my confidence. I'd recommend it to anyone who's got an appetite for a challenging but rewarding yoga experience. read more

I am SO happy and relieved that I found Oakland Yoga Studio and Jin Sung as a teacher. I moved to the Bay Area a little over a year ago and have been mostly practicing on my own. My primary teacher lives in Asia, and I've been traveling from Emeryville to Mountain View on a monthly basis to study at California Yoga Center because although there are tons of yoga studios in the East Bay, I haven't found a teacher who is as genuine and knowledgeable as Jin Sung. As a serious student and teacher myself, I practice yoga to better understand and align my body. I put my body through poses and sequences to open it up for pranayama and meditation, not so I can do pretty poses to show off my fancy yoga pants. Before coming here I tried several different studios and teachers, and unfortunately most of the yoga in this area is either too hippie or too intermingled with circus arts. Jin Sung's classes are transformative. Although I am not from a purely Iyengar background and I do love vinyasa flow, his classes have helped me work deeper in my body and taught me things no other teacher has in the past. He has the gift of understanding bodies and movement, and it is a gift because very few teachers are capable of looking at someone and spotting where their imbalances are. And even fewer teachers are as creative --- in setting up props and modifications for an otherwise painful pose, in drawing examples and metaphors to help articulate complicated and nuanced movements. I truly appreciate his talent and his dedication as a teacher. I can finally call the Bay Area my home, and I look forward to many, many more classes with Jin Sung at OYS. read more

i believe other students said it already. Best yoga studio in the bay area. Jin Sung's teaching will take any serious student to a deeper level and find new awareness of pose and body. Learned how to feel & release my kidneys in his class. Slow, precise and profound. Wish there were more teachers like this! Yoga as meditation, as science, as sober psychedelic journey. Left here many times with my body humming. read more

I discovered Jin Sung when he subbed for my regular teacher at the old Piedmont Yoga Studio. His teaching was a revelation, and complimented my other teacher's work wonderfully. Since that time, I have become a regular at Oakland Yoga Studio and Jin Sung's classes. Each and every time, I learn something new. The teaching is deep and precise, and as others have said, without pretense. Jin Sung has an amazing eye and pays close attention to each yogi in his class, reflecting each one's needs and skills. This is real Iyengar (as I understand it), beautifully taught with full heart and soul, in a beautiful space wth a joyful and welcoming community. All ages, no yoga fashion needed. If you want to really understand what the poses are about and how they fit to your body, come here. A Bay Area treasure. read more

It's an iyengar studio with ropes and all the props!! JinSung's class is slow paced, with lots of alignment explanations and demos. I've been a student at Oakland Yoga now for about a year, and this is a wonderful place. JinSung is a brilliant teacher. I am not nearly as advanced as most of the others in the class, but JinSung makes it work for all of us. He shows us how to safely do each of the poses, up to our own abilities, and without injury. I have been to a few of his Saturday classes, which tend to be full (20-25 students), but his studio can handle it just fine. My favorite classes are Tuesday and Thursday, 6:30am - 8:00am. I got into the habit of these early classes for two years at Piedmont Yoga, with Parag Mody. Parag was also a great teacher, but he moved back home in India. Just before he left, he told us that JinSung was offering the same early class, and his studio is just down the street. Finding a new teacher was a little scary, but I am so happy that I did. I like the studio much better than Piedmont. Its smaller, but it feels "better." Maybe its the wonderful teacher, maybe its the heated floors (yes, very nice on those winter mornings), maybe its the skylight. Whatever it is, I love studying with JinSung and highly recommend his studio, and his classes. In fact, the morning classes could use a few more bodies....so come on down...... read more

This is the best yoga studio in the Bay Area. Jinsung is a wonderful teacher, he teaches like he is leading a guided meditation. The studio is bright and has all of the straps, mats and blocks you need. The community is warm and welcoming. read more

Oakland Yoga Studio is excellent. Liza Pengelly's Sunday evening class for beginners is perfectly intense without being overwhelming. Liza is very supportive of whatever body type you are, and whatever your body's limitations are..at the same time, she also gently yet magically helps you break self-imposed body limitations. One evening I started the class by saying I couldn't perform a shoulder stand and proceeded to do it in the next 5 minutes, with Liza at my side assisting with whatever modifications I needed. I felt invincible! For anyone who is curious enough about yoga but intimidated by fancy studios and hard core yogis, this is the place, and Liza's is the class to attend. read more

I've been attending JinSung's intermediate-level classes for about four months now (after hearing about him for a few years) and I must agree with the others Yelpers that he is truly an excellent teacher. There's something about the warm and caring environment he has created, as well as his expert knowledge and instruction. He used to teach at Piedmont Yoga years ago and then branched out on his own just a few blocks down (with much easier parking I might add). He and the other instructors here teach in the Iyengar tradition (detailed, precise, internally-aware); yet JinSung's classes feel a bit different than other Iyengar teachers I have studied with, as he brings in his background in Zen to help students really reflect on the internal subtleties as well as empty the mind. His often guided sivasanas always leave me feeling refreshed and clear. He also has a great sense of humor and gives amazing adjustments. The studio itself is light-filled, clean and fully decked out with props & the coolest rope walls. He really takes great care of his space. Most of the other students in my class seem like they have been studying with him for years and I don't blame them. Everyone is friendly enough and seem like devoted practitioners. We do some partner work which one can always sit out on, but a fellow student can serve as one of the best props to help into a pose. I have been studying Hatha yoga for over a decade (albeit with major cycles of on and off) so can recognize an experienced and expert teacher when I meet one. I'm also discerning as all hell and I'm giving JinSung a big thumbs up! read more

JinSung is a great yoga teacher and he has provided a wonderful studio to practice with him in. Some of his regular students routinely walk in 10 minutes late and disturb the class. Another student moans and groans throughout the 90 minutes. Please show respect for your teacher and your fellow students regardless of where you study yoga. Namaste read more

Simply my favorite studio! I particularly enjoy Jessie's classes (Tuesday and Saturday). She is a great teacher! Usually small classes so that Jessie has time to pay attention to everybody and adapt asanas for you according to your abilities. Classes appropriate for beginners or more advanced, as well as for people not very flexible (like me)! Iyengar yoga, at slow pace but focusing on the right position. read more

Disclaimer-- This review may not speak to Oakland Yoga Studio overall but rather to specific instructors. And I haven't been to any of Jin Sung's classes, which have gotten the most positive reviews. Still, I feel compelled to let people know of my truly disappointing experience at Oakland Yoga Studio. I've been practicing Iyengar and Power Yoga for about a year to supplement my muay thai and crossfit training. I usually go to either Groove Yoga or Flying Yoga but I live close to Oakland Yoga Studio and decided to give it a try. After two frustratingly unchallenging classes, I'm officially done with Oakland Yoga Studio. My first class was Suzanne's Tuesday morning class, which frankly, should have been called Hatha Yoga for Seniors. This class involved more stretching than yoga-- there was a lot of stopping and starting between poses and no real flow between them. As I was coming to terms with the fact that I wasn't going to get the intense yoga workout I hoped for, I figured that maybe at least I could get a meditative practice out of the class. But that didn't happen. There was way too much explanation between poses and worst of all, too many interjections by the students. A question here and there about correct alignment is one thing but telling stories about your drive over to the studio is another thing! Worst of all, there were no sun salutations in the practice-- I don't feel like I'm doing yoga unless I go through a full vinyasa! I left disappointed but I must say, I did actually like Suzanne's explanation of the poses and her overall energy. I just wish I had known that this class was intended for less athletic types before going. Despite my less than ideal first experience, I decided I would give Oakland Yoga Studio a second chance. So, I attended Marisa's Tuesday late afternoon class. It started off with a few gentle stretches with props, which were fine but I was ready to move on to something more intense after 45 minutes of forward bends and leg stretches. But again, like Suzanne's class there was so much starting and stopping that I never felt like I was getting into a real yoga zone. This time, there was probably more explanation than yoga poses-- we did maybe eight poses total in a class spanning 90 minutes. Again, there were no sun salutations and too much reliance on props, on everything from forward bends to downward dogs to warriors. I understand the premise of all of this, but I felt like I wasn't challenging my muscles enough because I had to rely on a prop for everything. Things really went downhill when I asked the instructor if I could modify a headstand (that is, trying it without props, which in this case were chairs). She sharply told me "no" and instead instructed me to hold the headstand with the chairs for a minute longer than the rest of the class. I did so, begrudgingly, but was really put off by her behavior. I have never been to a yoga class where you are not allowed to modify inversions. I left this class feeling completely ripped off-- of my $15 and the 90 minutes of my evening. Of course I am biased in my review, being someone who is more inclined toward more physically challenging forms of yoga. But at the least, Oakland Yoga Studio should provide more detailed descriptions of their classes on their website, so potential customers have an idea of what kind of workout they can expect. I really want to be able to support Oakland Yoga Studio as a local business in my neighborhood, but so far they have given me no reason to do so. read more

I have been going to this studio regularly for over a year and I've consistently been going to one teacher, Barbara Roessler. She is absolutely AMAZING. The passion for what she is doing in her yoga is readily evident. She is so very patient and kind and her knowledge of actual Yoga Darshana is very factually grounded (a rarity in teachers of Hatha yoga in the West.) Her classes are perfect for the novice and long term practicioner alike. She does a beautiful blend of Yin, Vinyassa, and Iyengar yoga and is very methodical about gently helping her students achieve their greatness. Barbara honestly loves what she does and excels in her yogic teaching abilities. I can not recommend her classes highly enough. As a studio, OYS is new and still improving. Every week there's a wonderful new addition. The place is open and welcoming and has a comfortable heated floor. Experience your inner greatness through yoga, and let Barbara and Oakland Yoga Studio help direct you to the divinity within! read more

I'm a novice at yoga. In fact, when I tried this place out on a whim, it was my first time ever doing it. I want to give credit to Jessie, the beginner's instructor who was patient yet knowledgeable. She demonstrates great patience and works with her students so that they evolve and grow in their yoga practice. I have been working with Barbara for close to 4 years and she has influenced me on more than a physical level. Barbara continues to study yoga teaching and constantly brings new perspective to our class. She balances new and more experienced students with ease. Her style incorporates both Ying and Yang Yoga which is both relaxing and invigorating. I leave Barbara's classes with a calm head and heart, yet my practice of yoga has improved and deepened in the time I have known her. Please try Barbara's class. It is worth it! read more

Who do you see most in Jin Sung's classes? Yoga teachers, people with deep yoga practices--and people who need to care for their bodies, whether because of age or injury. The range of students testifies to the breadth of Jin Sung's knowledge and his sensitivity to different bodies and their needs. His brand of Iyengar invites an experience of mindful precision without fussiness. The studio is airy and well-equipped, completely unpretentious, welcoming to all. I've since moved from the Bay Area and am in Los Angeles now. I miss this studio. I have studied with Jin Sung on and off for about 5 years with a steady attendance of 2-3 times a week for the past two years. After doing the Yoga circuit and experiencing lots of instructors, I feel that I have found the best. Jin Sung is attentive, intuitive and consistent. Recently, I injured myself outside of class lifting something that was beyond my strength level. Many people said I should stop going to Yoga because of my injury. On the contrary, Yoga has help with my recovery and Jin Sung gives me instruction about what I should and should not do. I trust him completely! read more

This is as good as it gets. I have tried many yoga studios in the area and Oakland Yoga studio is the best. This is an Iyengar based yoga studio. JinSung is the main teacher and has a highly developed understanding of the energetic body. It is yoga from the inside out feeling the subtle energies of the body to find alignment. He is able to teach a class with a wide range of athletic abilities and yoga experience. read more

If you are looking for top notch Iyengar-style yoga instruction, JinSung is one of the best teachers you'll find in the East Bay. His detailed instructions, skillful sequencing and deep knowledge of human anatomy (on more levels than the rest of us will probably ever reach) makes him one of those rare teachers who continues to challenge his students year after year. And I would know, because I''ve been studying with him since he first arrived in town over a decade ago. If you're interested in a safe and healthy environment to cultivate an enduring yoga practice I recommend JinSung at Oakland Yoga Studio whole heartedly. read more

Committed to learning? If you are committed to a life long learning yoga practice, you should try Jinsung's classes at the Oakland Yoga Studio. Jinsung has been my teacher for the past seven years, during which time I have taken about 500 classes. Before finding Jinsung, I was a typical yoga jock who thought the constant injuries were a part of the practice. With Jinsung, I learned to be much more in touch with my body and to make steady progress, without injury. Jinsung approach to yoga is to patiently instill in his students an ever deeper awareness of their bodies. Each week he may concentrate on one or two body parts and how they interact in the various asanas. The focus results in a consciousness that stays with you forever. Jinsung is an excellent teacher. His focused incremental methodology, his encyclopedic knowledge of yoga and the body, his uncanny reading of his students individual needs, are all presented with a steady dose of humor. read more

JinSung is an incredible iyengar teacher. levity, wisdom, and kind-hearted. this is a great studio & he's the pillar.

After studying with Jin Sung for a couple of years I found two recurring themes. First of all his manner is patient and kind in the beginning classes, whereas when he works with intermediate students he can be impatient and rude. It's my belief he has a large competitive streak. For "hurry up" he often says "chop chop." I find this racist, but it is clear he hasn't had a liberal arts education. I also found Jin Sung extremely complacent with adoration from students, but should a student ask questions often, or be unable to fulfill Jin Sung's expectations of a pose, he can be rude. I stopped going to class when he offered me the unsolicited observation of my personal problem. "Well, what's wrong with YOU is......" This was in front of an intermediate class I had come to regularly. I walked out, and felt like a chump for giving him his fee as long as I had. Finally, Jin Sung, CAN be a good teacher, but is too much a mixed bag, personally, to subject oneself to. There are other, better yoga teachers in our area: David Moreno at Yoga Tree, Ada Lusardi, Donald Moyer of course, and Mary Lou Weprin. read more

This place is fantastic. I'm a regular at Sandra's classes, who also teaches at Piedmont Yoga Studio and Iron Works. Sandra teaches iyengar-based yoga, which means that she focuses on alignment and on helping you to understand how your body should feel inside a pose, not just how it looks from the outside, but she's also open to other influences, so we do things like sun salutations sometimes. Several of my (many) favorite things about Sandra: she has a sense of humor; she encourages questions but also knows when to stop talking and keep us moving; her students don't all have 'perfect yoga bodies.' In addition, Sandra is genuinely committed to making yoga AFFORDABLE. At PYS she teaches a $5 class, and if you go to that, you can take the Wednesday class here for $7.50. That's two top-quality classes for less than what most single classes cost. I also occasionally take classes with JinSung, who is also great. I can see that his style wouldn't work for everyone, but I appreciate that he pays attention to my needs even though I'm not a regular. read more

Oakland Yoga Studio is great. I have been doing yoga for 20 years, mostly in the Iyengar tradition. I have been studying with Jinsung off and on for the past ten years. He is a wonderful instructor and has created a great space in which to practice yoga. I have also taken classes from some of the other teachers at his studio who are also very skilled. The studio itself is amazing; heated floors, walls that accommodate straps at many different levels; an Iyengar student's dream come true. Jinsung gives a lot of detailed instruction, some of which makes perfect sense to me and some doesnt'. However, I know that the words that aren't making sense to me in a given class are ringing true to someone else. Jinsung works on a particular idea for many weeks or months in a row, so there are times when an initial instruction that made me go, 'huh?' finally sets off a light bulb in my body and I say Ah Hah, that's what you were talking about! read more

I have been going to jin sung's classes for ten years now. Every couple of years i go "out there" and attend a couple other yoga classes, just to see what's happening outside this tiny microcosm of yoga...AND the answer always has me right back in jin sung's class. He cares deeply about his classes, his space (he has put so much love and attention to his studio, it exudes positivity). Jin Sung has an incredible knowledge of the physiological aspects, in addition to the physical, of yoga, not too mention his detailed description of each move, down the the vertebrae. Oakland Yoga Studio offers Iyengar yoga in a beautiful custom-built studio with wall straps and heated wood floors. JinSung, owner and main teacher, is insightful and grounded. He has an uncanny ability to perceive subtle movements of energy, and to articulate concrete methods for making sophisticated anatomical corrections so students can reap the benefits of this traditional practice. He knows how to use props (blocks, bolsters, straps, sandbags) to support the body in healthy ways, and can help people of all levels, ages, and bodies to have positive experiences. JinSung is a phenomenal teacher and I can't recommend him highly enough. JinSung has taught me so much much over the last 4 years. Every class is fascinating and brings new insights and instructions. He is highly verbal, creates incredible awareness of one's body, and creates an amazing vision to guide you through the movements. This is also one studio where you will not get injured - he will watch, help, instruct, modify, and do what is necessary for you in your body.
