Many years ago Leon County got smart and bought this former Food Lion (boo!) shopping center…read moreinstead of building a stand alone library and community center. It's been a great marriage ever since. There's a branch library, community center and a Tax Collector/Tag/Driver License office. There's a Starbucks on the perimeter. A fitness center, nails, massage and a church. Country Kitchen is there too. The former Asian take out place will soon be a Mexican restaurant. I keep hoping that the remaining empty spaces will become more restaurants but we shall see. The parking lot is a relatively easy in and out and there is plenty of parking. There is a Taltran bus stop with cover and a flex bus option is available to get you to this hub. You just have to call them in advance to schedule a ride. For those taking the driving test there is a marked parking space that sees a lot of drivers practicing.

Things certainly have changed in regard to mall traffic; I have never really been a fan of going to…read morethe mall and usually just stuck with the "outside department stores" that had separate entrances (Macy's, Dillards, Penneys). Can certainly count on my hand the number of times I have been inside the mall since 2019. However, sometimes it is good to just walk around (when there are very few people around). :o) Wanted to purchase a few items from Bath and Body Works and actually enjoyed the quiet; the mall is still nice and clean; good choice of food items in the food court; quite a few new stores since the last time I visited inside the mall. On a different note, except for going to AMC and Belk every now and then, not sure what caused the downfall of the Tallahassee Mall, which I really liked at one point. :-(

Canopy Roads Brewing, who we featured graciously at our Elite Event at Lucky Goat Coffee in November are slated to open a space here. Dreamland BBQ, an Italian multi-restaurant and an Urban Food Market are destined to open in the coming months. And a music venue, too!! Steve Miller Band (who is awesome live, even for a man in his 70s) will be performing the inaugural concert at the Pavilion in late July. Cheers to a brand-spanking new Tallahassee Mall, ahem, Centre of Tallahassee! I have to stop doing that...

But…read moreI had 10 mins to kill on that side of town and stopped in to Burlington Coat Factory to get a peep at the (former) food court, see my photos. I'm excited to see the finished product. Burlington has had significant renovations already and has tons more floor space (new layout). Don't even get me started on the amazing deals I got on light blocking drapes (set of 2, 84" for $12!!!). Color me excited. Can't wait!

Saturday evening a girlfriend and I decided to try out Bannerman Crossings.....specifically the…read morecluster of restaurants that includes Blu Halo, Mom & Dads Italian, and Dao Restaurant. We hadn't been to the center before but thought it might be fun to bounce around between the three restaurants. Upon our arrival at the restaurant loop we actually encountered what would turn out to be the low point of the evening, the valet service. When I stopped the vehicle I kind of expected the attendant to come up to the vehicle, get the door and give me my stub. Perhaps the attendants was tired, but he was slouched against the stand and kind of waited for us to get out of the vehicle before doing anything......at which point I had already halfway walked to him. Rather than handing me a ticket, he said that if I gave him $5 (for the complimentary service) he would give us faster service and keep the car closer. It seemed a little odd to me since I hadn't asked for any kind of special treatment and seemed more like a gimmick for him to get $5. I asked if it would take a long time if I just got a ticket and didn't pay $5 and he replied something along the lines of "I'll still valet you for free, the $5 was just so we would take good care of you". At this point I was pretty put off and took the ticket and we walked to Blue Halo. I didn't recognize the attendants uniform so I don't think it was the company that handles most of the places I go in Tallahassee so maybe it was a new valet company or an in-house operation. Regardless it was an annoying way to start the evening. Now for the good.....Blue Halo. We loved the interior.....it had a very trendy vibe that was fairly unique for Tallahassee. We were quickly seated and our server was quick to take our drink order. I ordered a cosmo which was made perfectly. We decided to share a filet entree, medium rare, which was just fantastic....perfectly cooked. The service was great and the manager even took the time to check on us. We wanted to move on to the next place so we didn't stay too long....maybe 45 minutes but the experiece was good and helped remove some of the sour tastes we had experienced outside when we arrived at the valet. Next up, we stopped at Dao. Admittedly we were already a little full from the filet at Blu Halo so we ended up just having an app and share a bottle of sake. We shared the Gyoza dumplings which were pretty good and came out pretty quick. I apologize for not knowing the brand of cold sake we shared but the server again brought it out in a timely manner and it was well chilled and served. The decor or maybe more specifically the layout of the restaurant might have left a tad to be desired. Nothing wrong with it, just a little wide open.....nothing out of the ordinary. By the time we finished our sake we were a little full and tired so we unfortunately didn't have the energy to complete our mission and try Mom and Dads....we will have to try them another day. The attendant wasn't at the stand when we came out side, but after a couple minutes he arrived, quietly took the ticket and came back about 5 minutes later with the vehicle. With the way things were handled upon arrival I wasn't terribly surprised that he walked away without shutting the door (after tipping him). So I would have to say that we were quite happy with both Blu Halo and Dao's......if you visit, you might want to save the aggravation of the valet and just self park a little further away.

There is a movie cinema, Dollar Tree, Boot Barn and such. Casual and fast food restaurants face US-90. The Bass Pro tolerates overnight RV parking, which is always a plus. The lot is a little sloped but that was quickly solved with two leveling cubes. Decent shade and the landscaping is well maintained. Still, parking lots are a big draw for bad people so be sure your doors are locked and keep valuables out of sight.
