A very spooky…read moreplace Some cemeteries are very old, some very grand, and others very historical. And then some other old graveyards are just plain spooky. Mt Pleasant Cemetery definitely falls under the spooky category. Sometimes spooky is difficult to define, it can be more of a feeling than anything else. But as soon as I started walking around Mt Pleasant I definitely got the spooky feeling. Perhaps it is because of all the old trees. Lots of ancient, twisted, contorted and torturous trees that actually look like they are in pain adds an element of spookiness to the graveyard. There are a wide variety of different monuments, some simple and others more elaborate. Since this is a 19th century cemetery many types of obelisks are present, some small and others much larger. Once of the most striking things about this graveyard is how close it is to the surrounding houses. The stone wall marking the boundary of the cemetery is shared by several houses and some of the graves are almost in people's backyards. Not the oldest and grandest graveyard in Cape Ann but definitely one of the creepiest. It was probably designed as a Victorian park like graveyard but has gotten progressively spookier over the years. But then the Victorians were a creepy bunch anyway.

Monuments oceans and…read morelichen The Langsford Cemetery is also called Seaside Cemetery and appears on different maps with the different names. It's the same place though. The graveyard was established in 1857 so it isn't one of the really old ones in New England. Most of the graves seem to date from the late 1800s and apparently that's when it had the most use. The cemetery does indeed have some very lovely views of the ocean from the small hills and also has some very old and very spooky looking trees. Many of the monuments are rather modest and are covered by the yellow lichen that seems to cover everything near the ocean up north. Some of the gravestones are worn away but others are still in pretty decent shape. All depends on the location and direction of the wind. A lovely and historic old graveyard that not only gives a sense of Cape Ann history but also has some lovely views of the raging ocean.

A very scruffy…read moregraveyard The Bay View Cemetery was established back in 1728 and is officially the third oldest graveyard in Gloucester. It's a relatively small cemetery located on a rather steep hill. The cemetery was in bad shape the last time I was there. Many of the old gravestones were just nubs or lying on the ground. It looked liked someone just mowed the place but did a pretty crappy job of it. Lots of prickles, thorns and small stumps made walking through it difficult. Many of the old gravestones are interesting with lots of angels, weird designs and death heads. Hard to read names and dates and most of the memorials are modest and simple. These were poor people that probably didn't have a whole lot of money or time to spend on death. The graveyard does have some beautiful views of the ocean and surrounding area. Bay View is a sad and forlorn place but one that should be remembered.

Stones wars and…read morebeaches The Old First Parish Burying Ground has been around since 1782. That's when Richard Tarr donated the land to be used as the final resting place for the very first settlers of Rockport. He of course ended up being buried here. The ancient graveyard was the only place to be buried for quite a while and use to be called The Sandy Bay Graveyard. It wasn't until the mid 19th century that people started calling it the Old Burying Ground. Many of the residents weren't only fisherman and settlers but also veterans of the Revolutionary, French and Indian War or War of 1812. There's a whole heap of history in this graveyard. The cemetery is actually a lovely place to be dead or a cool place to explore if you happen to be still alive. It's on a gently sloping hill that gives great views of the wild Cape Ann ocean, rocks and beach. The location is wonderful even without the historic graveyard. A very fascinating, cool, interesting and historically important old graveyard. This is the place where the most of the settlers that first started Rockport ended up.
