I was incredibly lucky that my favorite band, Epica, was playing O2 Forum on the second night of my first ever trip to London (April 2018). I'd ridden myself pretty hard seeing the sights of London, Glastonbury, Stonehenge and Winchester over the last two days, and was on my way to Inverness the next morning, when I dragged my exhausted arse into this theater, sweaty, fatigued, and carrying all my luggage. I explained I was a tourist to security at the door and asked if I could store my suitcase at the coat check, which they said I could. They even helped me to carry my stuff! How's that for service?!
Wading into the ever-growing mosh pit (I mean, who sits down for a metal show?), I thrashed, pummeled and was thrashed and pummeled, for two hours, in the company of fellow Epicans. Wearing my North American VIP Tour shirt and sporting an American accent, I was warmly greeted by several locals, who bought me drinks/shared the whiskey they had smuggled in, helped me push my way to the front and (as is the Metal Code™), helped pick me (and each other) up when knocked down in the pit.
I recall that my ticket was around ~£35, which is pretty reasonable even in the US. The venue was large enough to accommodate several hundred headbangers, as well as tiered seating behind the main floor, a balcony, decent bathrooms (for a club), and generally friendly staff and security. Sound quality was ear-burstingly loud, but balanced clean enough to discern vocals while still beating my brain to mush with the baseline.
O2 Forum is the kind of theater I wish we had back home! British metalheads have it good! read more
