I figure the raving reviews by locals should mean something, and thankfully, I was right!! I won't call this a small bakery, as inside it is rather big with many tables. We wandered in, admiring all the pastries and bread they have, and I am sure looked very much out of place. To our delighted surprise, the owner came up to us and asked in excellent and polite English how she can be of assistance. She told us their specialty is pão da avó (which is in fact recommended by one reviewer) so we ordered that, plus a few other items to try. My husband loves pão da avó (which translates to grandma's bread) and he declares this to be excellent, much better than all the other places we've tried so far, including the much-scorned-by-locals A Padaria Portuguesa (even the uber drivers tell us to avoid that!) The owner told us that unlike the chain who uses frozen dough, here they make everything fresh, from scratch, starting at 3 in the morning. Some of the bread we got were still warm. For me I was delighted that they have ovos moles, a specialty from Aveiro much further north, the chestnut eggs, and the chocolate salami, to satisfy my sweet tooth. Needless to say, like any pastelaria in town, they offer the pasteis de nata. The owner even offered us one to try! The bread is ridiculously inexpensive, €2-3 for one kilo! We ended up getting a bunch of this and that, to fill up any luggage space we may have. Surprise again, the owner has some beautifully printed hexagonal tubes for us to put the egg tarts in, so they can survive the trip home! And oh, they are open on Sundays too!

Our server constructed additional tables with tablecloths (paper) for the growing crowd, bussed the tables, brought the apps, got the utensils, served the food, handled the check. He did it all at lightning speed. The food was delicious. We had the Grilled Cod for Two. My spouse who is not a fish fan could not say enough about this meal. Superb! We had barnacles, glass shrimp (it is supposed to have eggs outside the shell but unfortunately we were told the season was over so there were no eggs), spider crab, oysters with caviar, scallops, razor clams, and cheese with bread. We climbed a long narrow and steep staircase to reach a long narrow hallway with about 20 staff running about and squeezing by each other. Somehow, we found the dining room and our waiter greeted us offering us a choice of tables. Clientele were very well dressed and spoke in Portuguese looking very comfortable. He immediately brought us a huge basket of garlic bread! It was quite a nice atmosphere and reminiscent of an older home with high ceilings. We had trouble ordering from the phone app (as it should be because it was in Portuguese only) so our waiter guided us. No IPA and no wine except moscatel. But this was a cerveseria with no IPA! So we tried two glasses of moscatel- not our favorite as it was much too sweet. We agreed to the garlic shrimp and lazy crab. I asked what it came with and he said nothing and pointed to the garlic bread. I asked about ordering veggies and he said there were none! The crab was fridge cold but would have been better warm. The shrimp could have been tasty if not so salty. It wouldn't have been such a culture shock but it was also very pricey for what is was. I don't regret this experience as I was immersed in Portuguese culture and food. But no veggies is unthinkable! lol

I finally made it we ordered , steak, ribs and Brisket. My brisket came no bbq/ smoked flavors at all and it came with some type of gravy! I was so mad! I never had bbq with gravy. The ribs had no bbq/ flavor and the steak was just alright. I will not return. I hope the owner can take a trip to American and meet with some pit masters and let them teach him a few things about bbq.
