I've been back to O'Neills quite a few times over the last few months, and whilst it wouldn't be on my list of spots to go above anywhere else, there's been a solid reason for my regularity: Being as they show the GAA matches, they're one of the only pubs in Leeds that'll show the lower league football matches, namely Grimsby Town. Why on earth do I know anything about that? Because the chap is a loyal supporter, so we've been in to watch the match a few times. Now, I'm not into sports at all, but having come along to watch a few games I have to admit I'm getting more invested in it. What's this got to do with O'Neills? I'm really impressed that they're happy to stick it on, even if we're the only two in the pub who're after it. That's cool.
Whilst on certain nights this place is still heaving and bustling with folk, rowdy as anything, and the choice of drinks doesn't cater to my tastes, it's been a hell of a lot more pleasant that I recall a few years back. Maybe I've mellowed, or maybe it's eased off here a bit, but I've quite enjoyed the ambiance lately. The little room at the back is cosy, I like the structure of the building with big wooden tables, and the staff have always been absolutely sound. The coffee is decent and ruddy cheap, there are plenty of drink offers on if you're into it, and judging by the looks of the scran that probably isn't all that bad - home made in the least, from what I could see!
All in all, I'm warming to the place. For sports, it's a pretty decent place to grab a pint and watch what ever it is that you're into - so long as there's nothing to take precedence, the chaps will put it on for you. Winner. read more
