Whenever I am in Portugal, Brasapão becomes part of my daily routine. I go there for fresh bread…read morealmost every day. There is something wonderfully simple about starting the day with bread that is actually fresh, with that smell and taste that make you want to tear off a piece before you even get home. But I rarely leave with just the bread. Their almond tarts are one of my weaknesses. They are rich, full of almond flavor, and exactly the kind of Portuguese pastry that makes you forget you had any intention of being reasonable. The pastéis de nata are another favorite, along with the other pastries and sweets that somehow always manage to find their way into my bag. What I especially appreciate about Brasapão is that it feels like a neighborhood place, not somewhere you visit once and forget. When I return to Portugal, going there again feels familiar. I know where I am going for my fresh bread, and I also know that I will probably come home with more than I planned. There is a lot to be said for places that become part of the ordinary rhythm of your life. They do not need to be fancy. They need to be consistent, welcoming, and good at what they do. Brasapão is one of those places for me. If you are in the Aveiro area, especially around São Bernardo, stop by for some fresh bread, try an almond tart and, of course, have a pastel de nata. Better yet, try a few things. Choosing only one pastry is an unreasonable burden to place on anyone in Portugal. For me, Brasapão tastes like being back in Portugal. That is probably the best compliment I can give it.
