After an awesome weekend break at the gothic themed Bats and Broomsticks in Whitby I now insist upon eating all my breakfasts in a candlelit cellar to the strains of Sisters of Mercy. You may never have tried that before but once you have you will wonder how you ever breakfasted any other way. I'm feeling all dark and Mistressy just thinking about it. So to review. I believe I can sum this up neatly by saying that this warm, welcoming and quirky B&B just up the road from the heart of Whitby is PERFECT for you if you can say 'yes' to any or all of the following: 1) When I say 'Amelia' by The Mission you immediately start singing it in your head. 2) At any point in your life you have spent a weekend ruining the new DMs your badgered Mother finally bought you, to just the right degree of 'aged distress'. 3) You've ever picked holes in the cuffs of your school jumper to thrust your thumbs through. 4) You can air guitar to Alice Cooper's 'Poison'. 5) You have ever drawn spider webs on the corners of your eyelids. 6) Your father/mother/grandfather/grandmother has ever exclaimed you look like you are 'going to a funeral'. 7) You have ever deliberately sat in the shade on a sunny day drinking Cider and referring to those playing in the sunlight as 'The Others'. 8) You still refer to anyone as a 'Norm'. 9) You know what Stargazer Pitch Black is. 10) You have ever owned a dress or shirt made of crumpled velvet. Score double here if it was dark purple or had leather threading at the neck. So what are you waiting for my little Lestats and Booberellas?? The crab sandwich lacked flavor, but had a lot of crab meat which was nice. It comes with a side of chips and salad. The service was fast and there were a lot of tables open! 3 stars for a solid, average meal. Not very memorable, But if you need a quick bite indoors, this is a good place!

No parking as such, by chevroned areas all along the road, where you can park and we were given a permit for free parking by the Guest House for the duration of our stay. A warm greeting awaited us as we arrived, as did a nice cup of tea, great, after a long journey through pretty torrential rain. Our room on the first floor, was dual aspect making the most of the sea view, and flooded with natural light. Lots of space in the room, king sized bed, power shower, tea and coffee making facilities - fresh milk also on request, a nice touch. The whole room had a calm relaxed feel, perfect when you are only away for a few days. The wall mounted TV was a little small for the size of the room, but that was a minor quibble. Breakfast is served from 8.30-9.30am, in a separate dining room to the front of the guest house, again making use of the fantastic natural light. A good range of muesli, fruit, cereals etc, with a choice of fruit juice. Hot breakfast, you could a have the regulation Full English, or derivations of, such as scrambled/poached eggs on toast. The accompanying sauces came with a small pair of scissors, a nice touch if you couldn't open the sauce packets. Also a choice of brown/white toast, with a choice of jam/marmalades that strangely lacked any flavour. This was also evident with the toast and aspects of the cooked breakfast, odd really. Normally bacon and sausages would have more flavour than this, the scrambled eggs were good though. Would we go back? Absolutely, a lovely place to stay, convenient location, but with a strangely uninspiring breakfast.

Breakfast is delivered to your room at 8.30 in a little basket of goodies containing ,boiled eggs,rolls/croissants ,jams,cheeses ,yoghurts,cereals ,milk,fruit,OJ Added to this full Tea & coffee facilities in the room all provides for a good experience.As the rooms a large there are table and chairs in the room to enjoy you breakfast. Free Wifi is in all areas of the premises. Would definitely stay here again if visiting Whitby.

This was the first guest house we've stayed in for many years and we were with friends who booked…read moreit for all four of us. We've no idea of the cost of the overnight stay. We would rate it five star, but if you are disabled or lacking stamina it's very likely not for you. We were on the third (out of four) floors and there's steep steps outside just to reach the front door as well as very steep steps and several doors to manage inside. The room was cosy and we got a great nights sleep. The view of the sea was wonderful and the little motion sensor bathroom light that came on when we walked in was genius. Parking isn't easy to find nearby and like so much of our experience of England, parking is a costly business. It's easy to believe that they don't want motorists around England, even disabled drivers get no concessions, it's not the country I remember - it used to be kind, decent and people had pride in themselves and their country. That's long gone. We had to order our breakfast by filling out a form the night before and posting the completed form in a box at reception with brekky between 8 and 9am with check out at 10am. The brekky included kippers and smoked salmon. I can't see ourselves returning to this place as we prefer hotels.
