That was quite convoluted, but what I was trying to say is that both myself and my brother were born in this hospital. It's gone through many renovations since those days, but it still gives me a creepy, unusual, and chilling feeling when I see it. It's obviously a special place to me, but I don't really like hospitals, and besides, my brother nearly died here twice, once just after birth, complications from Asthma and such. You can blame my parents for that I suppose, they blame each other for it, so why not. It's a very modern hospital that is famous all over England, and perhaps all over Europe. Plus, it has to have a 5 star because I was born there. To give it less tha a 5 would just seem ungrateful. And this is the 1,981st review I've ever written, by the way.

It feels a bit odd reviewing a hospital. I visited a friend in here, so I can't really comment on…read morethe treatment, but on the experience of visiting as a whole. The car park is well signposted, but like most NHS hospitals, you pay on your way out and it costs several pounds. The hospital itself is a maze - there are signposts which seem to lead you in indirect routes, although you usually end up passing the help desk a couple of times to get more directions. It doesn't help that there are several entrances and exits on different floors. The hospital has a fairly nice atmosphere and doesn't seem too clinical. Some corridors have nice pictures on the walls, the cafe is wonderfully cheap (cheap squash, simple but cheap filled rolls) and there are book stalls and charity stands dotted around. It definitely feels like a place that is full of life.

The receptionists and some nurses were helpful and professional. However, I have one complaint - one of the nurses there was extremely rude. She really offended me! I had to bring in my 2 month old baby to my appointment. And while I was waiting to be seen by the doctor, she came over to me and asked if I was there alone and I said yes, that my husband was at work. She then rudely asked 'well who do you expect to hold the baby while you see the consultant?' I had a car seat that would suffice for a few minutes when/if needed. But for her to be so rude and abrasive (about other things as well), it was not necessary. I was shocked by her behaviour. Appalled! luckily, everyone else there was courteous, timely, and professional. If it wasn't for her, they would get a 5 star!

All the other people and…read morepatients have to take it for what it is: a massive shed that was saved from some war and somehow made it into the 21st century. The hallways are narrow and dark (I would rather not mention the smell of urine that suspiciously lingers in the hallway around the cafeteria - but then again, that may just be some bangers and mash gone wrong), the equipment is old and the staff average NHS. From a medical point of view, it may be an average hospital (with a lucky connection to a renowned university), but it just looks horrible and makes you feel sicker than you already are. If you are fit enough to walk, you may want to try a different hospital. If not, you can thank the stars that the local A&E is not located here, but at the John Radcliffe site. Get better soon !!!

The hospital does not have an A&E department. Parking is expensive, though there is a reasonable amount available. The hospital is mostly built on a single storey, which means it can be a long walk to get anywhere. There is a single canteen, the food from which is mediocre. The staff are largely friendly. Be aware that, as part of the Oxford University Medical School, you are likely to come across medical students as a patient, simply let them know if you'd rather they weren't there!

Both houses provide end of life and respite care for children and young adults (Helen House up to age 16 and Douglas House up to age 40). Helen House was the first childrens hospice in the world and the idea for opening the hospice came from the wonderful Sister Frances Dominica who was at that time Mother Superior at the convent. Sister Frances was giving help to a local family whose daughter Helen was very sick which inspired her to begin the childrens hospice movement for which she is famous today. You will never find a more wonderful caring, kind group of people than the staff and volunteers at Helen & Douglas House. It's a tranquil haven in the middle of a bustling city

Neither hospice charge the families for respite or hospice care and they receive limited funding from the government and so have to spend lots of time fundraising. This has to be one of the most worthwhile causes around and the people who work there are true angels.

The hospital is difficult to access, though the number 4 bus from the city centre comes to Littlemore. The staff are excellent and security is paramount.
