Lindsay emailed me asking if I could come in for an interview, and when I saw the job title "Director of Legal Division, Recruiting", I decided to google the company.... which is, of course, when I learned that they are a staffing agency. In general, I don't like to deal with folks who aren't upfront and this felt like a red flag but I scheduled an interview because I felt like it couldn't hurt to go see what they're about. (It is worth noting that I was asked to bring two forms of ID for payroll and that felt shady too.) I used that opportunity to for a bit more about the position via email and was told that it was in the early stages and that they needed more information themselves. Um, what? At that point, I became ill and had to reschedule the interview. I sent another email requesting more information. Lindsay said she would "try her best" to obtain it, but that I would need to come in anyway. Finally, I composed a professional but stern email, basically calling them out and stating that the lack of transparency was making me uncomfortable, and that I needed to know exactly what was on the table. At that juncture, I received a lengthy email explaining that yes, I applied to the Office Manager position, but that they have two to three available and would need ID because they're temp to perm, and the agency issues your pay for the first three months. She copied and pasted an example of a job description she was referring to. I wrote back thanking her for the clarification but never received a response. Though she was very nice, I feel like there was dishonesty from the very start, and that I had to do a lot of insisting and digging to get any actual facts. It doesn't make me feel like they'd be very useful in placement, negotiation, or back up - and at that point, I'm better off on my own.

As far as recruiters…read morego, this has been the best, most enjoyable and fruitful interaction I have ever had in my 15 years in the workforce. I had the pleasure of working with Tom Wright who, from the very beginning, was very positive, open, and most importantly - responsive. He contacted me within just a few hours of receiving my application, and that really set the tone for the duration of recruiting process. He always called/emailed when he said he would, and if he couldn't he made sure to let me know well in advance. Too many times with other recruiters, there was an initial conversation and then radio silence for weeks or months. This was never the case with Tom, as he made a point to keep me updated on the status of various steps in the process from both the side of the recruiting agency and the hiring organization. What I really appreciated the most is that Tom took the time to get to know a little about me and my personal goals before connecting me to the organization for an interview. The role to which I applied was a bit of a career change for me and I was nervous about it. Tom assured me that my skills and experience would translate well to the position, and that it would simply be a matter of being a good fit for the culture/environment of the organization. Outside of my professional profile, Tom wanted to know ME. He wanted to know about my ambitions, what motivates me, the type of environment in which I thrive, the type of environment in which I didn't...I mean, he did his homework! It made me feel confident not only in his ability to match me with the right opportunity, but that he would do his very best on my behalf. He also explained his preferred method of working with his candidates so that I would understand the flow and exactly what he was doing at any given point in the process. What helped me the most during the process, is that Tom made sure that he prepped me for every phone and in person interview. He made suggestions on information on which to educate myself about the organization, identified what the hiring staff would be looking for and what I could do to give myself an edge over other candidates. That, in itself, was very different from any other recruiting experience I'd ever had, and I believe that is what made the difference and helped me to land the job. When Tom contacted me to let me know that I had been offered the position, I could literally hear the pride and happiness in his voice over the phone. I felt so good that he'd been in my corner the whole time, and it made me happy not only to get the job, but that I could be a success story for him. As I now end my first week in my new role, I feel in my bones that this is a good decision and a good fit. Tom Wright and PNP have my unending thanks and appreciation for the superior guidance and assistance throughout the recruiting and interview process. I highly recommend them to anyone seeking a position in the non-profit sector.

How to demagnetize myself from this futile staffing agency attraction? With only a mere five minutes each respectively to meet with three recruiters to complete registration paperwork of two forms of identification, and a two hour eternal ordeal to take a computerized skills exam powered by Prove It. It was a very impersonal interview meeting. I arrived at 11:30am and did not depart until 1pm because of this stupid long haul exam. The skills exam room of the computer work stations is a confined space with very minimal air circulation which restricts my best ability to rate well. I knew a college education should definitely warrant a better job, but I was having really bad luck in my search and I didn't have a ton of experience as a recent college grad. The Aldan Troy Group was fantastic because it did the searching part for me. Within a week, I got a couple of one day temp assignments in areas that I was really interested in, and another week later, I got an interview for a temp-to-perm job. I ended up landing the job and am now making over twice as much as I used to at my old job. Another huge bonus is that now I have standard days and hours (M-F, 8:30-5:30). I would really recommend this agency for recent college grads. You don't have to suffer with retail work! I would also like to add that the placement counselor, Abigail, is quite possibly the nicest person on the planet.

Upon moving to the area, Suzanne was my first choice and first stop on a list of temp agencies. I liked that it's small and women-owned. Since they kept me busy during the holiday season, they were the only agency I worked with for about a month. It did slow down a bit after the holidays, but I still received at least two weeks worth of work per month. That may not seem like a lot, but for a small boutique company with no ads or sales, I think it's pretty good. Of course, I would've wanted more work! Who wouldn't? I have to say though, the few assignments I did receive were with wonderful companies and wonderful people. It's good to know they're just as picky about their employers as they are about their employees. The staff...LOVED them! I felt like they took everything we talked about during our initial meeting into consideration when placing me on assignments. My commute, my skills, my abilities, my interests, all taken into consideration. They're fun and personable and they totally get my humor. I liked them! We communicated frequently, even when there wasn't any work for me. I'm actually really shocked that they have reviews on here claiming they're unresponsive. Not my experience at all! I contacted them for everything: directions, resume critique, advice for interviews...everything! They even calmed me down when I got nervous or over-excited. When I met Suzanne, she was so attentive and gave me a world of resources and advice for my job search. When it had slowed down, I signed up with another agency...a bigger agency. Although I had a great interview with them and they called me frequently for assignments, I didn't accept any of the assignments. NONE! It felt like they just tossed me onto a call list. The companies were either not within a reasonable commute or they were of work I told them I was strongly against doing. I was unemployed, not desperate. Sharp contrast to TSS! That other agency had a really friendly staff (they're probably not the worst that's out there), but the agency as a whole lacked the personal touch that TSS has. I said goodbye to Suzanne and family when the first company they placed me with (a non-profit, as I strongly requested during our meeting) hired me permanently. Hire or no hire, I had a great experience with TSS while I was there. Job searching in a new city can be intimidating. I'm happy I did not have to do it alone.
