I am very sad to report that Fred passed away on March 18 at the age of 74. I was in the shop on March 28, before I found out, and they were conducting business as usual. That's how professional they are at Noyes Street Barber Shop. The Daily Northwestern interviewed me for a tribute/profile which they published today. What an adorable old-school barber shop. I was in town visiting family and my boyfriend was in MUCH need of a haircut before I subjected him to my extended family and friends. We randomly looked this up on yelp, called, and they were able to see us right away. His haircut turned out fantastic and was reasonably priced as well. They staff was friendly and helpful and I even watched them tackle 3 brothers under the age of 7 for haircuts, which the mother looked like she greatly appreciated and was a regular. TL;DR - Nice enough staff, but a lackluster haircut that didn't deliver on my expectations or requests. I recently moved to Evanston from Seattle and was really excited to try this place out based on the reviews here. I walked in an was greeted nicely and was able to take a seat immediately even though I showed up a few minutes early. I asked for a pretty basic undercut - Number 2 clipper on the back and sides, and trim/debulk the top. My barber used a number 1 clipper, and I didn't realize until she had sheared half of one side of my head. I don't mind the slightly shorter sides and back, but I would like to get what I had asked for. She then proceeded to go up rather high on both sides and back with the clippers so the hair on the top of my head looks less like a fashionable undercut, and more like a shock of hair on the top of my head. As an aside, she was rather rough with the clippers. It felt like she was trying to dig the hairs out of my head. After she finished the back and sides, she asked me what I wanted with the top where I told her a slight trim with some layering and general debulking. She said she understood and proceeded to take roughly a quarter inch off the whole thing, without taking layers or adding texture. The worst part was she sprayed down my hair and combed it forward to where it came over my eyes. She then proceeded to use the scissors to cut the hair while touching my eyes. That's a rather dangerous and risky practice, and it was incredibly uncomfortable to tolerate. I paid and left. When I got home I found a lot of straggling hairs that she didn't hit with the clippers or cut with the scissors. I won't be returning here in the future. read more

I discovered them shortly after moving into the area about 12 years ago, and have been a loyal customer ever since. Manny the owner and the other barbers all give outstanding hair cuts at a very reasonable price, tailoring it exactly the way you ask them to. With an appointment, there is never any waiting beyond the scheduled time, the shop is kept immaculately clean and there is always a very relaxed and welcoming atmosphere from Manny and his team. I'm fairly new to Evanston, but had only heard great things about this place from locals. So needless to say I was excited to get in with a last minute, same day appointment (the shop is appointment only). Plus, I remembered that it's right next door to Rollin' to Go--an awesome sandwich shop. Perfect afternoon outing. As others have mentioned, walking into the Noyes Street Barber Shop is like going back in time. From the neon lighting, old school barber chairs (Chicago built!) and Elvis playing on the 50s XM music channel, you definitely feel like Eisenhower is still President. But where in other places this would just be retro kitsch, here for some reason it feels authentic; it really works. The haircut itself was efficient, professional and seemed high quality. I was somewhat hoping to get one of the original proprietors, but the younger woman who cut my hair was great as well (if stoically silent). I will say that you should be sure to specify the length you want cut. I have a bad habit of not being detailed with my requirements and the cut ended up a little short. But otherwise it was very clean, and the hot lather shave at the end was a classy touch. On top of all that, you end up with a quality hair cut for 16 bucks (cash only). There are two types of barber shop clientele: the chatty as hell type and the one who sits in silence letting the rhythmic purr and trim sounds ease a hangover. I went in one Thursday for a haircut after missing my earlier appointment and discovered that there was a temp filling in for my normal barber. No big. After giving the man the silent treatment for four minutes, he asked if I had partied pretty hard the night before. I nodded. He nodded. Left with a great haircut and a super ichy t-shirt. I've been getting my haircut here for about a year now, and every single time, I've been very happy with my cut. 1930s era chairs, old music playing on the radio when you get in, and a straight razor to end your cut. Sounds pretty good to me. Manny does a great job every time, and if you're around Northwestern, its an easy walk. Get a sandwich at Al's and a cut from Manny. It' doesn't cost much more than supercuts or the haircuttery, but haircut you get is light years beyond them. My only complaint is that you have to make an appointment. I'd love to be able to walk in, but I understand their reasons. All in all, well worth the $15 you spend to get your hair cut. read more

I don't get the hype around this barber shop. I'm new to town and was looking for an old fashioned barber shop. To me old fashioned means someone that doesn't ask you what's your number? I can get that at super cuts! I was looking for a shop that offers a hot towel shave, uses scissors instead of the clippers and will take more than 10 minutes to cut my hair. At the end of the day I was charged $24 for a haircut and a beard trim. Honestly I don't have much hair, probably more on my chin than my head...so $24 seems a little steep. On top of that the barber didn't say a word the whole time he was cutting my hair, I like a little banter with my cut. read more

There aren't a lot of places left anymore where a guy can go in and get a solid haircut for under $20. Thankfully, Noyes Street Barber Shop is still one of them. Because you need an appointment, they have a steady flow of customers but are never overcrowded. They always take me right on time. I use Regina and she does a fantastic job. I would highly recommend Noyes Street to any guy who wants a great haircut at a great price but doesn't want to get their hair washed first (I do that in the shower at home for Pete's sake) or sit in some pretentious mod environment with loud music (Noyes Street always plays surprisingly pleasant 1940s era band music). We moved to Evanston almost a year ago and my husband was looking for a barber. We hit Yelp for reviews and he decided to try Noyes Street out. Fabulous haircut - and Manny, his barber, after talking to him ONCE remembered him the next time he came in for an appointment - asked how his trip had been, etc etc. Needless to say, my husband was very impressed and has been going back ever since. Great haircut every time and he has even tried a couple of new styles out at his request. Recently, our two little boys (toddlers) got a HORRIBLE haircut from another local salon and we needed to get their hair re-cut or fixed - or something - they both looked awful. My husband spoke to Manny about bringing the kids in and he said that shouldn't be a problem - it really just depends on the kid though as to whether he can cut their hair or not etc. So we made an appointment and brought them in and Manny was fabulous - very careful with well behaved but still squirmy kids (ages 4 and 2), took their hairstyle very seriously - checked several times to make sure we liked the outcome and had no problem with us stopping back by if we needed a change to it after we got home. Very reasonable prices, love the "oldies" music with the old-school barber shop vibe. Manny is a serious professional. A couple of things: make those appointments in advance - they book up fast and BE ON TIME - they have lots of appointments to get through - but they don't rush at all. I think I've been to every cheap haircut place in Evanston and if you're a guy, this is by far the best. Sixteen bucks gets you a great haircut- Manny asked me questions to figure out how I wanted it to look, and worked his magic, switching between scissors and a variety of different shavers like a painter between brushes. They pay attention to the details here- throughout the haircut they keep your neck clean and brush away the little hairs with big soft brushes. Then at the end they'll clean up your neck and spots by your ears with hot lather and a straight razor. Keep in mind that unless you pay for it and specify, shampoo's not part of the deal here like it is at most salons and such, so wash your hair in the morning before you go. From the cash register to the wood paneling to the furniture, I'm pretty sure much of the stuff has been there since the place opened in the 50s. Which just goes to prove that when it comes to haircuts, they just don't make 'em like they used to. read more

It's a barbershop where you have to make an appointment! Show up on time and get your hair cut in silence, pay your money and be on your way. I had no idea what I was missing out on until I came to this place. After coming here once, I vowed never to go back to Great Clips. In fact, I shouldn't even be comparing the two. The retro decor takes you back to a time when haircuts were as much an indulgence as a necessity, and the barbers live up to that expectation. The haircut was efficient but not rushed, and even though I suck at giving directions to barbers, they were able to personalize it. You have to make an appointment, which seems odd at first, but is actually really convenient because it usually takes about 20 minutes, so you can plan your visit really well. I was very sorry when Manny told me of his dad's passing. I've been coming here for some 30 years (any old timers remember Otmar?) and have been very pleased. When Manny came on board, Fred passed me on to him. It turned out well because he is also an excellent barber. There are now two part time (I assume) barbers working there alongside Manny, a woman and a man. Both have cut my hair when Manny couldn't get me in and did excellent work, also. Graduated from Northwestern in 1962...and was a Noyes St. Barbershop customer then; Manfred cut my hair sometimes; Ottmar at other times. Years later (had lived in the city and other suburbs) moved to Wilmette...where to get a haircut? Looked in the yellow pages and you can guess what name jumped out...I called. Manfred answered the phone. I identified myself as an "old customer" and we chatted for a minute before making an appointment! Was wonderful to see him again...we talked about old times, politics, kids, weather. I'm still a customer...still the best haircut around and the value cannot be matched, must less topped! Was terribly sad and shocked to learn of his death...he was living proof that excellence and integrity are essential to business success. read more
