The first ever Wilkinson was opened in Leicester in 1930, since those days over 300 more stores have opened across the country. The original formula of quality low cost products is still present but you will find some of the toys and things are a bit too plastic or cheap! Wilkinson's sell almost anything, from toiletries, DIY and minor repair equipment, garden plants, bulbs and accessories, furniture, beddings, toys and sweets, to mention but a few. Recently the Selby branch introduced food products, which are convenient and competitively prices with the likes of Home Bargains. The current recession will probably push Wilkinson's forward as we are all looking to spend less.

Homebase are the second largest retail home improvement store, with over 300 stores throughout the country. The Selby branch has a large, bright and modern show room displaying a fair range in general DIY. There is also a furniture department and an outside green house and landscaping section. There is a large kitchen and bathroom display area upstairs. The assistant enters the measurements of the room and the computer can show what each type of kitchen or bathroom could look like. Homebase often have 10% off weekends, which are worth the wait for the more expensive items and sales. My only gripe is they are often more expensive than the local Focus further down on Bawtry road.

The company already have 90 stores and are planned to open many more during this recession. Definitely one of the winners. There is a large free car park. B&M are very similar to the fabulous Home Bargains, which we are lucky enough to have in Selby too. The store is a large one selling everything from toys, non-fresh foods to shampoo all at hugely discounted prices. There is also some stock left over from Au Naturale Interiors, so you will find some furniture and interior knick-knacks. I visit B&M weekly along with Aldi and have managed to save pounds on the shopping bill :)
