I called ahead as…read morea courtesy to let the staff know that she has a psychiatric condition and may occasionally talk or respond to herself, and that she was doing so a little more than usual that day but that she is at her baseline. And her psychiatrist is aware and is changing her meds. I specifically wanted to give them a heads-up so the staff would not be caught off guard or concerned if they heard her talking to herself. She is pleasant, cooperative, follows directions, and has never required sedation for dental care. I was not calling to request sedation, special accommodations, or psychiatric management. Despite this, I received a call back stating that they would no longer see her because they are "not equipped for psychiatric patients" and do not provide sedation. I attempted to clarify that there had been a misunderstanding and that she does not require sedation, but they still refused to continue her care. It is incredibly upsetting that a courtesy call intended to help the staff better understand a patient resulted in her being refused care based on assumptions about her psychiatric condition. Patients with psychiatric disabilities still deserve to be treated with dignity and evaluated based on their actual ability to safely participate in dental care--not assumptions about what they may require. At this point, even if the office reconsidered, I would not feel comfortable bringing her back after this interaction. We will be finding a dental practice where she can be treated respectfully and as an individual.
