The Healthy Abode - The Healthy Abode Inc. is a Proud Member of BILD

The Healthy Abode

In all my years in Toronto, I have yet to encounter the level of service I received from The…read moreHealthy Abode. We began to notice a musty odor in our bedroom in our 100-year-old home. At the same time, I had noticed some missing mortar in the brick on the outside of the house and a broken gutter - meaning water was dripping down the side of the house and likely entering the walls. I was convinced we had mold and envisioned our whole bedroom being torn apart. After searching online, I came across this company which had good reviews so gave it a ring. I was impressed from the second Angelina stepped foot in my door. You know when you see Mike Holmes walk into some poor soul's house on his show and you know he's going to fix things? That's how I felt - she was going to save the day. And that's what she did. Long story short, she did her thing using equipment which can detect the presence of mold without making a single hole. She also checked other parts of the house to ensure she had the whole picture. She wasn't convinced it was mold. Surely enough within 24 hours or so, we received the "Indoor Air Quality (Mold) Testing & Investigation Report" via email confirming her suspicion. Turns out our old house with its plaster walls saved the day. Yes water had come in, and yes that was the cause of the odor, but because it was plaster, all we needed to do was dry it out and get out mortar and gutter fixed. (If it had been dry wall, we would have been screwed.) In the following days, Angelina offered recommendations on getting rid of the odor and responded promptly to any other questions I had. She even offered to help me rent an "air scrubber" if we continued to smell the must. Thankfully it wasn't needed. The price was very decent. If I recall, it was in the $350 range when all was said and done.

Macdonald Drywall - A customers basement

Macdonald Drywall

****BUYER BEWARE**** Hired Andrew MacDonald to renovate a…read morespace in my basement. He quoted me $5800 for the complete job. As the renovations went on he made a few suggestions and we agreed to them and paid accordingly. After all the changes the new renovation cost was $10,300 to complete it. We agreed on 50% upfront and 50% upon completion. Andrew pushed for more money even though the project was no where near complete and we ended up paying the full amount of $10,300 as we trusted him. BIG mistake!! After he received the full payment he then sent me the following - Hi Ryan, I wanted to touch base with you regarding the remaining work, the cost to complete everything, and the updated timeline. When I originally priced the walls, I underestimated the amount of labour and materials that would be involved once we started moving and reframing the walls. I did this to try and be honest and keep the added amount low for you. The changes ended up creating considerably more drywall finishing and taping work than I had anticipated, especially around the tops, intersections, transitions, 6 pot lights, and areas where the existing and new walls meet. These areas require substantial work 3 -4 coats of mud and a final skim coat to blend. I take responsibility for underestimating that portion of the job when I gave you the original price. Now that I can see the full extent of the additional work and materials required to finish everything properly, I'm going to need an additional $2,500 to complete the remaining work. The current budget will take me to finish everything and be stuck when it's time for IKEA. This is also why I waited to do the cabinets and sink to the last to see how much time and material it took to complete the new layout. I also want to let you know that the additional work will require another week. We expect to finish up by the end of next week. I understand that both the unexpected additional cost and the extended timeline may be frustrating, and I don't take that lightly. I just want to be upfront with you rather than cut corners or leave anything unfinished. The additional amount is to cover the extra labour and materials required to properly complete the drywall, taping, finishing, and related work resulting from the wall changes. My goal is to finish everything properly. I apologize for this added cost but I am put in a bad place financially trying to complete the work. Once again I apologize for this I am doing my best in terms of the quality of construction using all of my skill to create more liveable space for your family's home. I told Andrew I really didn't understand why I needed to pay him an additional $2500 as we had already agreed on a price but in the in the end I agreed to pay him an additional $1030 upon completion which he agreed to as well. I told him that I really hoped he was not taking advantage by asking for more money and then he sent me the following message If I wanted to take advantage I'd have took my tools and left like an unhonest piece of shit Contractor Would, but I'm not that person so I'm trying to hash it out with you. Andrew came the next day and everything seemed fine. After about 20 minutes I told him that I needed to step out for an hour and if he needed anything feel free to ask my wife. By the time I got home Andrew and his wife packed up all there tools and they were gone. As a parting gift he decided to drive over my front lawn. In the end I would say that Andrew completed a 3rd of the work at best, left a massive mess, destroyed the carpet on my stairs marked up my walls bringing materials in my basement which he promised to fix. Obviously he did not do that. This was on October 9th 26. The day of this post is October 11th 26. I've reached out numerous times with 0 response. I later found quite a few negative reviews that customers posted about Andrew and his work and he was very quick to respond blaming the customer. That is why I decided to make this post so in-depth and factual.
