great place, for veterans I would suggest here do not go to other places you will get your personal property stolen I do not want to call a place out they are helping some needy people but their service is not good at 2100 Lakeside Avenue East but here at the VOA the opposite the front desk people are nice the case workers, intake and all personnel are really professional and good they do their job very well and they need nothing from no body that telling something or saying that their management is good if all those people are doing their job well and need nothing from you. then I would say management is doing its job well. I've been in here on multiple occasions, and I have had two friends that have adopted animals from here with zero issues. Sadly, a lot of these reviews are from faceless people who have only put one review to bash this place so I don't give it much credibility. I also donate as much as I can as far as supplies they need. the people that volunteer here are saints donating their time and resources to help animals. Wonderful place esp the clinic. Sadly it closed down. The only walk-in clinic that provided basic animal wellness check. For the longest time if anyone picked up a stray cat or kitten and not sure if they wanted to adopt it, i told them to go to this clinic. Nurse and vet saved thousand of lives right there. Extremely affordable price that I went back to their page and donate more money hoping to help keep it running. I am here to give it the most positive review it deserved but it is too late. Packing up stuff right now to donate for the shelter. Clean old Towels, moving blankets. pet toys that your spoiled babies is not interested in, please pass it forward for the unfortunate ones in the shelter. And yes you just walk in and drop it off. scam * puppies covered in feces * owner clueless * manager rude * unprofessional * unclean Please, please get your new furry friend from anywhere else. On 07/15/2021, this facility hosted an event at Thirsty Dog in the flats. They advertised a puppy named Willow on their Instagram account, stating that she would be available at the event "on a first come first serve basis." [see attached photo] I took off of work, showed up very early, and waited. I was one of the first people there. About 20 minutes before the start of the event, a woman showed up and asked when she could take home Willow. I questioned the volunteer (let's call her Emma) about this, and she informed me that the director promised the dog to this woman but that the other dogs were available. This is a classic bait-and-switch, which is an illegal tactic. Emma felt very bad about the situation, and I know she was just following orders given to her. My mother and I called the facility to speak with the owner, Jeff, who apologized for the incident and informed us that the manager had been fired for her actions. Without us prompting him, he offered me a free dog which would be comparable to Willow. I called often, checking to see if there were more puppies. One time they offered me a beagle as a comparable dog to a chihuahua... Another time, they immediately put me on hold for 20 minutes, and when they finally answered, they had just gotten done adopting out the dog I was calling about. Today, 08/25/2021, I saw doxie puppies posted to their Instagram at about 9AM. I called and left a voicemail at about 9:30AM. They called me back when they opened at 10AM, and informed me that they would hold the dog I wanted in the back until noon. I arrived at 11AM and held the puppy. The place smelled absolutely foul, and some of the puppies were covered in their own feces. I was told that the dog would be $200, but I informed them that Jeff told us we would not have to pay. According to the manager, Jeff did not recall this conversation. The manager informed us that we misunderstood. Then she changed the story and said that Jeff misunderstood. My mother called and was angry about the constant lies we have been told. The manager hung up on her, and proceeded to call my name out in the shelter to find me. She motioned for me to hang up the phone on my mother. She told me "you're an adult" and that she would not speak with my mother, nor would she let her in the building. The shelter broke their promise. I was honestly willing to pay for the dog even though they revoked their promise, but after the way I was talked down to by the manager, I left. Also, it turns out that Emma was the one fired over the incident, not the manager - even though Emma was just doing what she was told. DO NOT GO HERE. They will lie to you left and right, and they are not taking care of the animals properly. It breaks my heart to see all of these poor animals being neglected. This place should be shut down. I captured a stray cat ("Dusty") that had been roaming the neighborhood for several weeks during the wintertime. I did an extensive search for a cat rescue/foster place but was not able to find one that could take him. So I called the SPCA and explained the situation to manager, Holly. Holly was very nice and told me that they would take Dusty as long as he had been in my home for 72 hours. After the 72 hours, I called back and set up an appointment for me to bring Dusty in. However, before we hung up, Holly added that if Dusty bit the vet during his checkup, he would have to be put down. WTF?? Otherwise friendly cats often freak out at the vet, and Dusty had been running loose in the neighborhood for so long that he had become distrustful of people. I told Holly that I didn't want him euthanized and that I would continue to look for a home for him. After another extensive search, I was unable to find any place that could take him. I had also come to the conclusion that Holly was mistaken or lying about cats being euthanized for scratching a veterinarian. I called the SPCA again and spoke to Holly. She told me to bring him in. I brought him in the following day and spoke to a young girl at the front counter. I told her that Holly had told me to bring the cat in and that Dusty was in the car. Counter girl told me that Holly had told her that I had cancelled 5 times. I informed her that was absolutely NOT true and asked if Holly was there. Counter girl hesitated and then said, "No, I think she's gone for the day." So I walked into the other room a what do you know...there was Holly! I told Holly that counter girl said that she (Holly) had said that I had cancelled 5 times. Holly responded, "You did." I informed her that that wasn't true. Holly decided to argue with me and I admit that I became somewhat unhinged and pointed out that both she and counter girl were (expletive) liars. She then threatened to call the police. My friend released Dusty back into the wild. Sad that so many animal advocates have such little respect for PEOPLE, even when the person is trying to HELP an animal. I visit this SPCA shelter often finding the animals well cared for and the staff knowledgeable and helpful. It's often very full of kittens, cats, puppies and dogs of various breeds, sizes and personalities. I give credit to the staff for the awesome work and care they are providing in such a fast paced shelter. Sometimes they are working so hard, that even before they are done caring for one sweet soul, another or a few are already in need of help. Such compassion and kindness. The pets, most recently a kitten I adopted from here, is a wonderful companion and addition to our family. Dogs that my sister has adopted from the Cleveland SPCA on Brookpark Rd. have been and are great additions to her family; all with their unique personalities. I would recommend this shelter. I adopted my dog here in 2016. She was given the vaccine for kennel cough and I adopted her after she was spayed. They only gave us like two pain medication pills. I had to get more from my vet because she was in pain. You'd think after a major surgery like that you'd get more then two pills. Not even two days later she was coughing badly. She had that goose-cough. I took her back to the shelter and told them she has kennel cough. They took her into the back and came out and told me that it'll go away on its own. About a week later, her coughing got even worse. She was hacking so bad she was coughing up stuff. I took her to my vet. They gave me medication and she got better. It went away. I guess this place doesn't know there are a viral and bacterial strain. My dog has possible tracheal collapse and this incident made it worse all the coughing. She ended up needing surgery because she had a luxating patella on both legs. I guess the "vet" doesn't know about checking the animals. 5k for the surgery. I asked this place for help to pay some of the bill. They told me that they couldn't because they had a fund for some other dog that needed surgery. I used to volunteer here back in 2011-2015 and I loved it. Now it's changed. I'd love going here and seeing Beverly everyday happy to see me. Everyone scowls at you. They are rude. I quit volunteering. This place changed for the worst. read more

EVERY TIME my husband and I have gone into this shelter it smells so bad we have had to leave. The manager is a joke, such a rude person. Every person I have talked to that adopted a dog from them ended up with huge vet bills less then 24 hours later after the dog got sick. The dogs are always sick sounding with huge coughing fits and sometimes vomiting. Staff is barely 3 people. Ive seen people come in, take one look and turn around to leave. At night you can hear the dogs and even smell them from a good distance away. In all honesty, this shelter needs to either be revamped and moved or shut down. No safe place to keep their sick dogs INCLUDING Parvo dogs. I feel so bad for every animal in that shelter. The dogs get walked just enough to use the bathroom then BAM right back into either a small cage or kennel. DO NOT adopt from these people! This shelter is refusing to take back a dog I got a week ago. When adopting a dog, you dont know what you will get. But, at the very least you would expect a shelter to not adopt out aggressive animals to new pet owners. Maybe they didnt know, but we virtually begged them to take this animal back, I have been losing sleep, not eating, I am not equipped to handle an animal that bites people. They are now ignoring my pleading calls for help. They insisted she needed a 10 day quarantine although from the beginning we insisted she didnt break skin. Even after the 10 days, they made no promise to take back the animal that I am in now way equipped to deal with. They told me to call other shelters. I tried. No one will take an aggressive animal and they (the shelter they suggested we call) even suggested we euthanize the animal. Even after telling them this they still refuse the animal. I feel hopeless, this place seems only for profit and dont care about the animals or the people they adopt them out to. No matter how cute the animal, Id stay away. I will update this review if the shelter gives me some much needed help. I am desperate, please help me. read more

I adopted my kitten from here and loved the experience. It was clean, and all of the animals seemed happy and well cared for. To the best of my knowledge, they are all spayed/neutered and up-to-date on shots. I loved that! It helped to ensure our kitten had all of the medical attention she needed! As new pet parents, that was incredibly appreciated. They also offer free checkup should it seem the animal is sick for two weeks after adoption. The customer service isn't the greatest, but personally that was a minor annoyance. Can't recommend them enough! read more

I got my dog 16 years and 1 month ago. Little dog grew to 55 pounds from 8 pounds and I fed him some of the better dog foods on the market with some chicken, turkey, ground meat, rice, peas, potatoes and in the summer fresh corn on the cob where he could just pick it apart with his tiny sharp teeth. He looked forward to so many walks I was a sad person this past year as he wound down to just walking to his backyard until he finally could not last two days so I had dog put to sleep. Best thing about him was he had a routine for me to wake up at 5AM and take him outside and he made sure I kept it by walking up to my bedroom door to wake me up with jingling of his collar. I cannot believe people think their dogs have to be so ? as it is up to the dog owner to make sure that the dog gets the loving attention and diet to live a long life as an incredible servant for its master! I had my dog since 10-24-07 and will miss him as my dog; he was a great find or he found me so I took him home and started training him on house rules and he always was such fun that he never ran away ever! I will miss him flipping in the back yard when I came outside to bring him inside to relax in the air conditioning. read more

Where my husband and I live, the shelters are full of pit bulls. We're not interested in pit bulls for various reasons and so we wound up driving an hour north to the SPCA. We ignored the awful smell and the fact that a lot of the puppies were covered in their own feces, thinking maybe they just didn't have time to take them all out. We found adorable puppies and were told we couldn't adopt until Tuesday at 10am, and to come early because they get busy. As a surprise for my husband, I told him I had to work but actually got up early enough Tuesday morning to make it to the shelter by 8. He's been wanting a puppy for so long and we were so excited about the ones we'd seen there. I look inside the building, and there's people in there. I was like huh, maybe they opened early. So I open the door and walk in and stand behind the two guys at the counter. One of the workers looked at me and asks "can I help you?" I told her I wanted to adopt a dog. She asked which one. I told her which one and she pointed to the guy at the counter and said "he's taking her and you can't look at dogs until 10." I was well that's interesting. I then called my husband to verify they'd told us we couldn't be there until 10 to adopt, but yet had customers inside two hours early adopting dogs! My husband called them and they told him it was for a vet appointment. So, they lied. They obviously had let a friend or family member come early. My husband then tried to comment on their Facebook page and they blocked and deleted his post. So, I waited until ten. Found a dog I wanted. Asked the worker about it. She told me it wasn't available. I walked back out to my car, which was parked in the back, and saw one of the workers walking a lab and yelling at it to "shut the fuck up," and "sit the fuck down." The back of the parking lot is full of grocery carts they use to store boxes in and there was a dog chained up outside all day. When I got to my car, stray cats were sleeping on it. By now I was like whatever, this place is crazy. What I didn't know was that my husband had emailed the manager with our complaint. The manager emailed him back, saying "your wife and son are here now adopting Annie. Have a nice day." 1. I had left, and we don't have a son and 2. Annie was the second dog they told me wasn't available. I'm so upset with this place. They're liars, they're rude, and they're filthy. Not to mention they aren't t even nice to the animals they're taking care of. It's a shame that shelter animals are treated this way, and that the people working there obviously do not enjoy what they do. read more

Update to my review. We did end up having to spend $300 for corrective surgery on the spay job done by the hack calling themselves a "vet" at this place. The fix we got when I did take the dog back was a restapeling where the "vet" overlapped my dog's skin and restapeled her back together. So, $300 later and meds AND antibiotics my dog is healthy and fine and never going anywhere NEAR this place again. I recommend rescuing pets from this place, not just because they need adoption. read more

Had a really bad experience, and if I could give this place no stars I would. Went here on 4/17/2021 with my girlfriend to adopt one of the dogs we were interested in. I had went to the place by myself the day before, and phoned my girlfriend, and sent her pics of the two dogs, and we both agreed we wanted to adopt one of them since we had been wanting to adopt one for while now. So we go in the morning before our dogs vet appointment. When we arrived, there were already people there waiting to adopt. No big deal, but we were still going to try, and get one of the dogs if still available. So we are waiting, and since they only allow one person in at a time per household, my girlfriend decided she would be the one to get one of the dogs, and I would stay in the car to watch over our dogs. So I agreed to that, and went back to the car. Minutes go by, and I'm sitting in the car with our dogs, and this lady that works (long blonde hair, but unsure of her name) there comes out, and I noticed she looked angry, and was making hand gestures to my girlfriend. At this point I didn't know what was going on. I decided to call my girlfriend from the car, and asked what happened. Apparently this lady was yelling at her telling her that she wasn't letting her adopt a dog, or ever letting a dog into a household where she lives in since she was the girl that caused a scene yesterday? Asked her where her car is? She pointed at my car, and the lady tells her..."Oh you brought a different car today (my girlfriend doesn't drive nor owns her own car)." My girlfriend had tried to tell her she had mistaken her for someone else, and that she was not even at the shelter yesterday. The lady then proceeds to tell her..."Well if that is the case, I'll consider apologizing." Then shuts the door. She had said more to my girlfriend, but I'm not even going to go there. Just exhausting. At this point while my girlfriend is telling me what had happened, I am getting upset at the same time because I went to the shelter by myself. So I get out of my car, and waited to get inside so I could talk to this person. One of us was finally let in, and I approached this person, asked to talk to her, and explained to her that my girlfriend was never at the shelter, and that I had went on my own. Also explained to her that my girlfriend was at work (which I feel like I shouldn't even have to explain in the first place). There was a girl at the front desk that confirmed she remembered me, and that I was there by myself looking at the dogs. Apparently the girl that had caused a scene also had the same color hair as my girlfriend (her hair is dyed blue). The lady then tells me that she apologized to my girlfriend, which she DID NOT. At this point she is nice to me, and lets me take a look around for another dog, but still doesn't make up for what had happened, and felt that a proper apology should have been done. Just really mentally exhausting. I had thought this place was okay up until this happened. One of my current dogs is actually adopted from there, and even then I had a bad experience. When I adopted my dog, I noticed she was covered in fleas. I called them, and all they did was give her a shot, and gave me a flea comb, and never heard back from them after. The vet at the time was rude as well. I don't know why I even gave this place another second chance. A lot of people say the place is dirty. It has become worse over the years. The place ranks of smell, and cages are way too small. I'm sure they are trying, but it's unfortunate not much have changed. It's safe to say that my girlfriend, and I have decided we would rather adopt somewhere else where its cleaner, and better staffing. Never again. read more

We adopted our special boy last week and boy oh boy are we having fun with him. He is very intelligent and not so much a cuddle boy, but sometimes will come by you and lay down. He is a little rough in playing, but we can be rough too. He does know when to stop with out hurting you, but is not so nice with other dogs. Probably because he was not exposed to other dogs. We love our little Hugo (whose paws are gigantic) and hope he grows into the large dog that we were looking for. All staff were pleasant and helpful and we didn't have any problems with anyone there. We missed out on another dog the day before and decided to go there earlier the next day for our pick and voila we got our puppy. We have nothing but good things to say about the people who volunteer at this shelter. We never had any sarcastic voices or mean people. We could not afford to spend the money that the papers wanted or the web. Thank you again ASPCA! read more

I am giving them 1 star after an extremely unpleasant and UNPROFESSIONAL interaction with Holly and Megan today. A few weeks ago I went to the SPCA to surrender a stray cat. This cat was shy but not aggressive. Holly told me that they don't take stray cats but if I kept the cat for 72 hours, it was considered mine and I could bring her back with a "donation" of $35. After keeping her for a few days, I called again to make an appointment. Holly told me that if the cat bit the vet, it would have to be put down. I made the appointment hoping the cat wouldn't bite the vet. After thinking about it, I decided to look for cat rescue places where I knew she wouldn't be killed. I called SPCA and canceled the appointment (first cancellation). I had no luck finding a rescue or anyone else to take the cat so I called the SPCA and made another appointment to surrender her. When the day of the appointment came (Feb. 1,2022), the cat was hiding somewhere in my house and I couldn't find her so I called and canceled that appointment (second cancellation). Holly told me to call her when I caught the cat. When I did capture the cat, I called the SPCA and left a message. Rather than keep her closed up in a carrier, I decided to take her to the SPCA. When I got there, Megan told me that they could not take any more cats and that Holly had told her that I had canceled 5 TIMES. I told Megan that was not true and that I was very upset that Holly would say that. I asked if Holly was there so that I could speak to her. Megan told me that Holly had left early that day. I didn't believe her so I went into the shelter area and, just as I suspected, Holly was there. I informed Holly about Megan saying that she (Holly) wasn't there and that she claimed I had canceled 5 times. Holly told me that I had. When I tried to correct her about what had actually taken place and explain that I was there OUT OF CONCERN FOR THE CAT, she continued to interrupt me. My temper and my voice escalated, I became highly undignified, blew a gasket, and reminded them both they were F#%@$ liars. And they are. SHAME ON YOU BOTH!I HOPE YOU TREAT THE ANIMALS BETTER THAN YOU DO PEOPLE! read more

The customer service here is honestly the worst. I've come a couple times to look at dogs, and employees are downright rude. The point of it all is to rescue an animal, if you're willing to put up with the nonsense of it. Half the time some of the dogs aren't available for adoption for whatever reason, but there's no sign on their cages. It's a disorganized mess. read more

Got our best dog ever here 11years ago after visiting almost every pound in Eastern Ohio. This is a no-kill shelter that brings in lots of dogs that are on the kill list at other ( often more southern) shelters. After I got my cat fixed on Monday she became infected. The instructions said to bring her back. It happened to be Sunday. Apparently no one important works on Sunday for emergencies.... so we had to go pay out of pocket to see what was the issue. Severely infected, how? I followed all the guidelines- cone on at all times when not around her to watch her or if away. No running or jumping. So there's no reason she should be infected. read more

This place is kind of run down looking and the animals look sad, mostly probably since they have been abandoned. The dogs are constantly barking and I get a headache. Some of workers are rude and seem like they hate there life and job. Seems like it attracts rude customers too. A lot of nasty middle aged woman here. EXTREMELY rude staff. The attitudes of the staff and the owner or manager were distasteful. We asked simple questions because we were interested in adopting and the lady had the most rude tone I've encountered from a worker and was absolutely no help at all. Her demeanor was that they simply didn't want our business. I felt that me and my family were being profiled because we were not allowed in together while there were families together right inside the door. If I could give negative stars, I most definitely would based solely off of customer service and rude staff. Very cute puppies though that need homes. My wife and I came into the shelter just to take a look and see what they had (we were looking for a dog for our 10yo son). From the minute we walked in, we were greeted with "Hello!" We inquired about possibly wanting to adopt a dog. We were directed to the doggy area, and we were met by Breanna. She walked through the area with us and answered all of our questions. She was so sweet and awesome! She held a special connection with every dog there! Every cage we went to, she told us about that dog (demeanor, what they liked, didn't like, etc.) Almost to the end of the area I saw a dog in the middle and INSTANTLY fell in love with her! Her name was Lacey and of course, Brianna told us a lot about her. Unfortunately, she wasn't ready to be adopted yet (she just had puppies), so my wife and I went up there every day until she became ready to be adopted out (about a week and some)! During that time, we delt with most of the staff (and all of the animals lol), and everyone we came in contact with, was absolutely amazing! Holly and Melissa were usually at the desk when we got there and knew us by name. They are both hilarious, knowledgeable and so very awesome! Another lady that was very sweet and knew a lot about the dogs was Christie! The dogs always gave her so much love when she would take them out and clean up their cages! She would tell us silly things that Lacey did that morning, or how she was feeling that day! So that really helped me get to know Lacey and what kind of dog she was day by day! That was so very much appreciated!! Everyone was so wonderful!! From the first time we came in, until we were able to finally leave with our Lacey!! Again, Melissa and Holly got everything together and did all of our paperwork for us. The whole experience with this shelter was amazing!! Everyone was such a big help and so wonderful! We have since taken Lacey back to them for services, and that time was the same thing! I will definitely be going back if we decide to ever adopt again, and I have already recommended them to a few friends of mine!
