Hubby has been wanting to take sailing lessons for a long time, and after our youngest expressed an interest in either the Naval or Coast Guard Academy, he was even more motivated. His research led us to North Texas Sailing School on Lake Ray Hubbard. We took both the Beginning and Intermediate sailing classes together, which meant one Thursday night 3 hour classroom based class and then two weekends on the boats-both weekends included 6 hours on Saturday and 3 hours on Sunday-ending with testing on the last Sunday to earn your ASA 101 certification. The classes also included lunch and after sailing drinks on Saturday, but nothing on Sunday. Being Texas in July, we had a variety of sailing conditions over the two weekends, from strong winds to dead calm, although all of it was HOT. The school gives you time on the boats with at least 3 different instructors, so you get to learn different styles/techniques for the same skills. All the instructors were great and it allows for a lot of individual time at the helm, as well as learning by watching others. That said...the boats are 22 foot wooden J22s and they are uncomfortable!! And there is no shade, so had to slather up the sun screen like crazy. The Saturdays made for really long days and I was more than done by the end of them. Not sure how they could have broken it up differently since you need a certain amount of time on the boat, but the 6 hour days were brutal! Once you are certified, you can come back and join the racing on Wednesday nights and/or Alumni sails on Sunday afternoons. I would recommend NTSS, and we might even be taking a Coastal Cruising class with them in the future. read more

What a fantastic introduction to sailing! Michael has a wealth of knowledge on all facets of the sport and the patience and passion to share it with beginners. Our "on the water" instructors did a great job of patiently guiding a group of complete novices during the ASA 101 course, and by the end of the weekend we were comfortable operating the boats. I am so glad I was able to learn here, I feel confident in the skills I have gained so far and excited to continue my education. read more

My husband and I are very happy with the instruction we have received from NTTS. Michael and his staff are incredibly knowledgeable sailors with so much experience and great stories to share. They are also surprisingly patient in helping complete beginners become confident, competent sailors. We also enjoy the opportunity to experience the yacht club and to be immersed in the sailing culture as we learn. Everyone we have encountered there has been friendly and welcoming. My wife and I wanted to learn to sail... After researching several alternatives we decided on North Texas Sailing School. I contacted the school and spoke with the owner Mike Hoy. He was very professional and answered all my questions. The school offers several ways for beginners learn about sailing. We started out with "Discover Sailing" class which got us comfortable on the water, then moved on to the ASA 101 course. The school is located near the Rush Creek Yacht Club on the Southeast side of Lake Ray Hubbard and has a fleet of J-22's which are fun boats to learn on. The instructors were all very professional with a varied sailing resume. After completing the course and passing the test, my wife and I are now certified ASA members and enjoy sailing when and where we can. My husband and I have taken a 3 hour private lesson with Evgeny and it was excellent. We had previously taken ASA 101 in the Galveston area, but that was a year ago and we felt like we needed a refresher. The owner, Mike, is welcoming and encouraging, and really wants to promote sailing. Rush Creek Yacht Club is a fabulous location for the school. I have now completed the ASA101 sailing qualification with the North Texas Sailing School and I have to say it was a great experience for me. I did not shop around beforehand, but I cannot imagine that other sailing schools could be any better. I just checked out the NTSS website first and signed up with them and I am glad I did. Michael does a great job organizing and instructing. He is also very prompt in replying to emails etc. The group of instructors he has working for him are great. They are friendly, easy going and have a great way of correcting your mistakes without you ever feeling embarrassed or awkward. The J-22 boats that they use for instruction are clean, well maintained and ideal for learning to sail. Lake Ray Hubbard is a great lake to learn to sail on since it does not get as crowded like some of the other Dallas area lakes do. The other thing I was most impressed with is that Michael goes out of his way to make sure you get all the sailing time that they promise. When weather cut short a day of sailing he scheduled make-up time with everyone in the class. I gave this school 5 stars because they did nothing wrong that I could see and, to be honest, I cannot think of anything they could have done better. This school breaks up the ASA 101 class into two separate classes. Probably so they can charge double. I took the first class which was fine, they have decent boats (J boats) to learn on. The following summer I wanted to take the second class and asked to be placed in a class. He told me that it was tentative because he wasn't sure if the class was going to be full. He charged my credit card anyway for the full amount without my knowledge (he keeps your credit card on file even after a year!). . I didn't hear from him so I called a couple days before the class. He said it was full. Turned out that the next several weekends were also booked up. It was going to be over a month before I could get a class (I had already waited 3 weeks). I told him to forget about it, I would go somewhere else. He seemed put out and charged me a 10% fee before refunding the charge that I didn't even authorize in the first place. My recommendation is to head for the Houston area and take the class. I was able to test out of the ASA 101 and take the ASA 103 and 104 class all in a single weekend for much less cost than I could have done it through this school. Bay Area Sailing out of the Kemah area is where I went. My recommendation is that this school is probably fine for a beginner that doesn't mind paying a little extra. I would pay cash if I were you though. You might want to make sure you are guaranteed a class before you pay. read more
