North Stores, as the name implies, occupies a prominent position on North Road in Maindy, amid a cluster of local businesses including The North Star gastro pub and music venue and Musicland, (more commonly known as the Sound Centre), the long established music shop selling instruments and a plethora of technical equipment from amps to PA systems.
Judging by the number of advertisements in the window you'd expect to find a supermarket somehow concealed inside, but the reality is that they stock a limited range of a quite a few goods, just like any other convenience store. Lottery, papers, fags, food and booze, as well as the usual confections, plus a few specialist items like Asian foodstuffs. They are also a newsagent and paypoint. There are plenty of discounted items (especially in the booze department), but with a Tesco Metro directly opposite, I guess they have had to try and up their game in order to compete.
The family that run the shop are really nice, I hope they continue to give Tesco's a run for their money, and manage to carve a living from this well organised independent business. read more
