"YARN," I shouted and immediately spun to my right and into the driveway of what looked to be someone's house. Now, you probably think I'm some sort of hardcore knitting addict but that isn't the case. I just got back into knitting and am in the middle of knitting a pair of hand warmers for my brother's girlfriend. I bought yarn that was slightly thinner than the yarn I used to make my first pair of hand warmers, so it looked really "loose" on the needles. I wanted a slightly smaller set of needles but ran out of time before our trip. I sort of/definitely planned to stop at whatever yarn place there was to scratch that itch of feeling unprepared. So that's how we ended up at Playing with Yarn. I immediately found a set of size 2 bamboo needles for the insanely low price of $4.70. Granted these were not Clover's Takuma needles but they were bamboo and under five dollars. I took a look at the yarn - there is a pretty wide selection- before paying. I knit mostly in my school years, so any skein of yarn over $9 is pricey to me even if it's super nice merino wool, hand dyed, blah blah blah. It's a very small shop to be sure, but the owners are nice and the selection is good and decently priced. Also, if you go up to the second floor, there is a great view of Lake Superior!

Yet, Jake had just the right balance of letting you do enough on your own to feel like you'd actually blown glass with taking over to ensure your creation was beautiful. He offered clear direction and, also, a clear opinion when asked. The best part was waiting for our beautiful ornaments/orbs to cool. We could hardly wait to go back to pick them up! It's all about teaching kids to respect themselves, one another, and the environment. Young campers return from Camp Bovey with a renewed sense of purpose, new friendships, and life skills that go beyond learning how to start a camp fire, pitch a tent, fish, canoe and swim (they'll learn those things too, of course, among many other camping skills). This is a non-profit endeavor of East Side Neighborhood Services located in Minneapolis, so there's a sliding-scale fee for those who qualify and diversity among campers and staff. Speaking of staff, the senior staff are seasoned professional, while the summer staff are hired from area colleges, making it the perfect summer job and resume builder.
