My wife and I lived here for 9 years before finally purchasing our first house. We selected this…read morecomplex out of many in the Capitol District because they allowed "large" dogs. For us, that meant our Golden Retriever could come with us. Not many seem to allow them, but parent company Solomon Organization has many units that do. Our rent was reasonable at the time, and still was when we moved out. We had a 1-bedroom with den. They usually tried to raise our rent by a little every year but my wife successfully negotiated down or entirely canceled the amount of the increase. We noticed that their property manager seemed to change every couple of years. This was somewhat frustrating as we would try to build a relationship with them and instead we frequently had to re-explain things. This was especially problematic because they insist on a 60-day notice for renewals but sometimes wouldn't get you the renewal paperwork until there were only 30 days left on your lease. They once lost our paperwork (thank goodness I had a spare copy to show we signed it) and that led to a weird situation where our lease was extended to mid-month. They usually were prompt about maintenance issues, but not always. Some items had to be requested over and over because the fixes were never very good (flaking drywall on corners, etc.) They offered to repaint our unit at least once but we would have to empty it first... how does someone do that? They also offered to redo our outdated kitchen and replace our carpets but again we couldn't live there when they did that. Huh? We had good neighbors on one side and bad neighbors on the other. Management did nothing to stop the kid screaming and running after midnight above us or the tiny barking dogs next to us. People stay there a while, so hopefully your neighbors will be nice. The facilities (pond, pool, rec. facility) are okay but not great. We stopped using the rec. facility because it was small, and the pool is frequently filled with kids so we didn't go often (I guess that isn't the fault of the complex though). The ponds were lovely for taking walks. WARNING: you cannot break your lease under any conditions. You can get someone to assume the remainder of your lease but they then need to agree to renew for an additional year. This is very problematic if you are looking to buy a home. We frequently had to decide to either renew our lease for one year OR continue looking for homes. As a result, we ended up paying rent on an apartment for three months after we closed on our home. They will not budge on this issue. If that weren't the case I would have given them 4 stars. Overall, we liked it there and only moved because we wanted a home. I would recommend this place as a great place to live, but be proactive regarding your paperwork and maintenance concerns.

In the state of NY it is illegal to not…read moreresign a lease if a tenant has made a complaint about health and habitability conditions within a year of lease renewal. They did just that. I am now in the process of suing them. Additionally Donald the property manager is exceedingly unprofessional claiming me complaining about issues was me in mental health crisis and stated to me out loud when I handed over the keys "I hope you get the help you deserve". Donald, I hope very nasty things for you. Termites also appeared in my second unit that I was moved into. Cracks in walls.. my electricity bills were about $500 for Jan and February. DO NOT RENT AT TWIN LAKES OR ANOTHER SOLOMON GROUP COMPLEX. THIRD UPDATE 6/10/25 - IVE BEEN HERE FOR TWO MONTHS AND AM NOW WITHOLDING MY RENT PAYMENTS. THERE IS MOLD EVERYWHERE. Nothing has been addressed. My water heater has now busted and flooded my kitchen and downstairs neighbor. The water heater is dated from 2008. If they had done a proper inspection ONE TIME in my apartment none of my issues would have come up. STILL DO NOT MOVE HERE. OUTSIDE VENDORS WERE GIVEN PERMISSION BY MGMT TO ENTER MY APARTMENT WITH 0 NOTICE. I WAS NOT DECENT AND HAD TO PUSH THE DOOR CLOSED. I SCREAMED DO NOT COME IN. THE MAN YELLED HE DID NOT CARE HE WAS COMING IN AND IM A CRAZY BI***. DO NOT MOVE HERE. You all need to rehome Shane. Awful employee. The experience I had looking at apartments vs my experience moving into an apartment has been so deceiving. This place is awful. I am here less than a month and so many things have wrong. I didn't have a deadbolt on my door, it took maintenance over two weeks to get my kitchen drawer to me and finish the first initial maintenance request they dated at complete 4/2... no. It took two weeks. The vent in my bathroom was broken, I am still missing trim around my apartment, the apartment REEKED of cigarettes after the weed smell dissipated from the cleaners who DID NOT CLEAN at all. It was absolutely DISGUSTING. The bathroom was an absolutely a biohazard (human waste on side of cabinet and floor) and now my bathroom sink leaked and everything under there, pack of toilet paper, all hair tools... RUINED. DO NOT MOVE HERE. Place deceives you purposely, I wish I never signed the lease.

The neighbors on the other hand are a bit transphobic and hostile to me just for saying "hi" to them... trying to be neighborly... one neighbor even used to send her kid to my door to stand there and start up weird conversations... I thought the kid was talking to himself until I looked on my Ring camera and saw the kid standing there facing my door... very creepy.... but that's the area up here. After a while of ignoring the Karens and Gladys Kravitz's, they tend to just move on to something else. But I pay them no mind.... walls are pretty thick except on the door where you can hear everything in the courtyard outside. It's not terrible, but just something to be mindful of. I live in the back area so my experience may differ from others. The units are generally nice and warm in very cold temperatures. I came from an apartment in Philly where the front of the building had no insulation and the doors would not firmly close and let cold air in. Your mattress in the bedroom would be near frozen when it was 20*F outside there. So here is definitely a huge step up. For me, the price was $300 less than Philly and it had washer/dryer hookups (no gas hookup, just electric which is fine)... So I'm happy with the apartment and the area in general. The people I live near have their prejudices so you can't really change that.... but so I won't talk to them much. The office staff never gave me any issues to speak of, so that's a plus. No complaints from me. It's still a step up from my old Philly apartment and it's nice to look out the patio door and see random wildlife just walking by. The cat does seem to like watching them from time to time.

After 5 days of waiting I called them and asked if they could void the check and send a new one. They told me that mail moves slow sometimes and I should wait a couple more days. I called everyday after that for a week, and they always told me to wait a couple more days. Finally they agreed it probably got "lost" in the mail, they told me to call when the manager would be in, I tried 3 separate times. I don't believe she even exists. Finally after threatening to take them to small claims court they said I could come pick up the check in person because there was no sense in trying to mail me a 3rd check...they never even told me they tried to mail it a second time... It stated in the lease they would take out a cleaning fee from the deposit. Turns out this cleaning fee is $175! In addition to that they also took out another $100 for "gutter damages"??? In my final walk through the lady who was with me told me everything looked good. I lived on the second floor so I can't imagine how I could have damaged the gutters. I heard a lot of turkeys in the field next to the complex, maybe one flew into the roof. The best part was my name was spelled wrong on the check. IF they tried to mail me a check I bet they spelled the forwarding address wrong. Be warned, expect to hundreds stolen from your deposit, if you're lucky to get one back at all!

We looked at about 18 complexes throughout the area in various price points, and found nothing that remotely compared within this price range, or even for significantly more money. Our apartment was spacious and had lovely amenities such as a gas fireplace, attached two-car garage, laundry room, crown moldings and Venetian blinds- not to mention MASSIVE closet space. We had a gorgeous view of beautiful woodlands. The units were quite well-built- even on the windiest days, no cold air seeped in around doors or windows, and we rarely heard our neighbors. While some of the finishings are not luxurious per se- white appliances and laminate counter tops, we prioritized size, layout and view and could not have been happier. The maintenance team was wonderful, snow removal was excellent and the office staff was lovely as well. We left only because we bought a house, but would (and do) highly recommend this as a great place to live.

And when they did have a good maintenance team , they would end up losing them as well. Emails went unanswered about broken appliances. It took 4 months for me to get a refrigerator that was making a sound that sounded like a plane landing when my microwave broke. It took over 3 months to get another one. But they did give me one for my counter. Unfortunately, the kitchen was very small and a counter one just took up more space. Their pool is never available there's always something wrong with it. When the pool is available it is overrun with children that are unsupervised. After my husband passed away , I couldn't afford to rent anymore because it was raised so high. When I received my security check it was half of what it should have been . They took out charges for the blinds which I understand they were not in good shape. They also took out 135 for cleaning. I left the apartment broom swept clean. After every tenant, the complex rips out the rugs and paints. There was no reason I needed to deep clean. I paid sewer trash and water every month and they took out charges out of my security. Check for those utilities saying that they're billed 2mos behind behind. But I paid them every month. And that was the first I was hearing that they are billed 2mos behind. . Do yourself a favor stay away from this place Nancy O

First, it was the half dozen trees in front of the 500 building that stood around with big orange X's on them for about 6 months before they got taken down. Then the rug in the common area of the 1800 building got replaced (after the holidays), but not before several months of navigating bare particle board. There was the fun filled time during which we were asked to empty our balconies (just after Thanksgiving) to make ready for the new roof that didn't happen for another 6 months, but completely ruined any idea I had for holiday decorating. There was the time a hoodlum shot through my kitchen window with a bb gun & they still hadn't replaced the glass over a year later, when I moved to a different apartment. Then there's the ever present garbage due to the overflowing dumpsters. Now, my balcony is unusable & has been for months. Just don't.
