I love Hillsboro Public Library! I'm an avid reader and have checked out many books over the years…read moreI've been a member! There's a section of Best Sellers that current popular books are available for check out. I've checked out some epic reads without having to wait. I like browsing the shelves and seeing staff picks placed on placards next to the book on the shelf. I've read many books that I wouldn't have read otherwise from the recommendations. I've recently started checking audio books and books on Kindle through the Libby app. I love it! I love that they do different events. I've taken my grandkids to family friendly events. Last week I had to check out the current artwork being displayed. I was mesmerized by the Warrior Women Portraits by Danyel Rogers. I received an email that there was an artist reception being put on for her. Many of the subjects of her photographs were in the audience. The reception was nicely done. I hope to make many future events!

So many others have mentioned the books, DVDs, library of things, Kanopy subscription, events and…read moreother elements that make it worthwhile to hold a library card here (the donuts aren't bad, either). But I can think of three reason off of the top of their catalog to keep going here: 1. Flamer by Mike Curato 2. Beyond Magenta: Transgender Teens Speak Out by Susan Kulkin 3. Heartstopper, by Alice Oseman You don't have to travel very far from Brookwood Parkway to find people who want these books taken out of kids' hands or incinerated just because they're unwilling to have conversation with their own children or unable to cope with what those conversations might mean. You don't have to pretend that it's only the burden of far-flung portions of the state to deal with those who'd prefer to ban books than discuss their context or meaning. In the library's backyard, there are folks with a friendly smile on their face and a cup of coffee to sell you who'd have each of these books removed expeditiously for specious reasons while outright slurring the people depicted within the pages. Granted, they call a lot of these same good folks neighbors, clergy, employees, family, and "friends" while taking their labor, payment, and tithes, but I guess letting people reach their own conclusions about their stories is the step they won't take. Well, many thanks to the Hillsboro Public Library for offering these books to anyone willing to read them. A library is often a first step along anyone's journey of self discovery (someone in the comments figured out they wanted to make horror movies, and started that walk here), and offering them the freedom to do so is a foundational portion of a public library's existence. Instead of closing that road, more of the library's neighbors should come along for the trip.

I really love this library. It may be small, but the librarians and staff are so kind and helpful…read more If they don't have the book you're looking for, you can always just make a request to pick it up there from another library. They've taken so many precautions because of COVID and I feel safe dropping by to check things out. They're also doing free printing during COVID (you just send it to their email and pick it up there). The first 10 pages are free. Super grateful to have such a resourceful library so close by.

During non-COVID times and hopefully soon enough again they offer reading circles and storytimes for kids, of which we took advantage quite regularly. The online system, including Libby and Kanopy for books and movies, respectively, is comprehensive. You can search for specific things to read, browse librarians' and others' recommendations, sign up for Zoom events, etc.. You can also request purchases to add things to their collection and if that's not an option they'll make an interlibrary transfer -- eg, from somewhere else in Oregon or Washington -- on your behalf and find whatever it is you'd like to read and have it sent to your preferred WA County branch for pickup. All free!!!

My Son and I hung out here a few days ago as he was showing me the town. Over 2 spacious floors,…read moreis high ceilings, great natural light and attractive woods. It's clean, well kept, and organized. The books shelves looked a little light, but this place rocks as a community gathering and study spot. It also has a very nice children's section and lots of plug-in opportunities for keeping one's electronics up and running.

However the idea that a library is supposed to be a quiet place is no longer accurate. I mean the kids section of the Shute Park Library is one thing, I mean kids are supposed to be there and let's face it, kids learn better when they are active. Today's visit was more like a zoo. So today there was a visitor who was having a conversation out loud. This wasn't unusual...the unusual part was that another visitor started to get aggressive verbally with them. This was both disturbing and upsetting (kinda the same thing). I believe a library employee was familiar with this person and was able to de-escalate the situation rather quickly. Then there was a 20 minute situation between two visitors and their door dash/grub hub driver. I didn't even realize you could eat in the library, but i guess that has changed too. Despite these distractions I was able to complete my work, but I wish libraries were quieter. But I am glad they are cooling stations as well.

We are big fans of WCCLS in my house (the Washington County network of public libraries). One of my…read morekids and I had an open morning and Banks was along the way to where we were headed anyway and, because we hadn't stopped in this particular branch before, we added it to the day's itinerary. It's a small spot, which was fine for us as we didn't come with any particular needs or books in mind. (My own to-read pile is nearly a dozen books tall so no new books for me atm...) My kid was immediately smitten with the small toy selection and while he played there I was able to gather a great selection of picture books about his current favorite subjects (cats, construction). I was able to resist new books but NOT able to get out of there without spending a good amount of time browsing through their seed catalogue. MUCH more there than at any of my usual libraries. Like the other branches, you can request books from anywhere in the system and have them delivered to your preferred location. Not sure when we'll be back in town but if nearby and have time to kill will certainly make a stop in. SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY!

The good part is you can order from any library and they will get it here to pick up. My wife loves this feature.
