Central Library (or Bexleyheath Library as it is more commonly referred to) is the main library…read moreserving the Bexley Borough area. It is the biggest and has the most comprehensive collection of facilities. These include a large variety of books covering all genres to borrow. There are also extensive free to use IT facilities and internet access. It is an ideal place for school children or college students to study and work or for those without web access at home to log on and check emails. I used the facilities recently to browse through the university prospectuses which were upstairs and sat in their quiet zone to help a friend select a course. The quiet zone was a good place to concentrate and the nature of the zone was well respected by all who used it. DVDs and local history archives are other among the many other things on offer at Central Library which has become an important part of Bexleyheath life as activities such as reading groups, guest speakers and children's activity sessions are offered. The DVD and CD hire is a good way of entertaining yourself on a budget as the rental costs are a significantly lower than those at places such as Blockbuster although the titles are not always as recent or as well stocked as rental shops. The library can get busy at times and although I have never experienced it being cramped, you may have to occasionally wait for a member of staff if you need help. The staff are always cheerful and enthusiastic as well as helpful when it comes to locating items. Getting to the library is easy as it is near the Broadway where almost every bus in Bexleyheath stops. Parking in The Mall or in local pay and displays are available too. Be cautious of parking wardens as they patrol the area regularly.

Parking is available via Broadways parking areas, DO NOT try and park on the road as Traffic wardens appear as if by magic ticket you and disappear again!!. Inside it is a good layout, with a really big reception desk to one side and on the other some book shelves with popular books and some computers for quick use. If you go around there is clearly categorised loads of books. There is a section with computers that are for long use. There is also an upstairs, to study. There are comfy chairs and a range of papers to choose from if you wanted to go in there and get away from things in a good book.

I've used the library to look at the newspapers and magazines to save me buying them, and also for browsing the internet when my internet access at home has been down. There are plenty of internet terminals available for up to an hour at a time, you just have to show your membership card at the main desk and the staff will log you in to one of the computers, assuming one is available, as they can get very busy after school hours. The staff are very polite and helpful. There is a good, large childrens library here, and they open late on Wednesdays until 8pm which is handy if you work all day. You can also borrow Cds and DVDs, and of course - books! I think the library would benefit from having some public toilets on site or very close by, but apart from that I have found Sidcup library to be very useful for me!

Also the option to reserve (50p charge) a book that they don't have from another Bexley library and get it sent here. Its really easy to get a borrowing card and you don't have to live in Bexley. Just turn up with ID and a proof of address (I used my drivers licence for both) and you will get a card and a pin number (which you need to access the on-line library from home). Then you can take 12 books home with you that day! (I came back the next day with the car, too heavy to carry 12 books home...!). Its very bright and airy in there, and they also have computers to access or desks that you can sit with your own laptop and plug in. Also free wi-fi (just have your library number to hand so you can join.) I love books, and although I love owning books its nice to have a browse and get a feel for authors that I haven't heard of before. I just know this is going to become a Saturday morning stop off before shopping!

You can get free Internet access here, without even needing to get a library card, which is great. They have a lot of local information and leaflets, which they keep up to date. All in all, a great library.

There is an amazing range of books from reference to fiction to non-fiction as well as children's books. Anyone is welcome there due to the range of books and there are areas for children to sit and read. It is also very well situated because it is next to a primary school which will encourage all aged children to read. The library is perfect and is suited to anyone and I would definitely recommend it as your local library and it would be for a very long time.

They have a free film club too which shows adult and children's films for free. It's situated right next to the Costa Coffee so you can get your book out and read with caffeine! There's been some vandalism which is such a shame - the Downham Estate is a rough neighbourhood but having such a brilliant resource right in the middle of it should be respected.

Downham has always been known to be a rough area, but nevertheless it feels like the staff work hard to engage with the community and make it a place that the residents can call their own. As well there being a good selection of books, DVDs and CDs and talking books, there are always loads of fun craft activities for children and story-times for babies and tots. There are at least 15 computers available for internet access. It's free and easy join the library (just show at least one proof of ID) and anyone can join, i.e.you don't have to be a Lewisham resident to qualify.
