Many Opera attendees come here for a quick bite to eat (order at the counter) before settling in their seats. Located on the plaza across from the Opera house and very convenient, I Highly recommend MARROU. I often stop in for a cafe and pastry late afternoons. Lovely interior and very comfortable. Staff is friendly and helpful. When my husband band travels I often pick up dinner for myself. Marinated shrimp, grilled veggies and stuffed egg plant among my favorites. Enjoy!

(And, it was that mid-afternoon time when it's difficult to find something to eat most places in France.) I'm reluctant to give the place two stars, as the staff was very kind and attentive, but the sandwich had been sitting in the case for a while, and I've gotta say, it was quite a lot LESS than delicious. We so seldom have food in France that doesn't pass the tasty test, but I'm afraid that's where we landed here. Maybe we chose the wrong sandwich! Maybe we should have had chocolate instead. But next time we're hungry in Marseille, we'll likely seek out another option.

The grandiose store front does leave an impression on you. The rich smell of roasting coffee beans is enough to wake anyone up. This place has an easy to understand setup. Long counter on the left for the cafe and a long counter on the right for the store. As we were not purchasing any beans to take home the store with it's seemingly endless selection of different coffee blends didn't get much attention from us. The wife ordered a coffee and I a hot chocolate. I don't remember seeing any tables, just one long counter that snaked it's way around the edge of the store with stool after stool lined up. The wife gave her cappuccino a 10 out of 10. This is coming from a woman who's highest score at any Australian cafe has been 3! She is absolutely the pickiest person when it comes to coffee. I've tasted very good hot chocolates, but this one... this one... I've never had my breath taken away by a hot chocolate before. It was so silky smooth and rich in chocolate taste that I was considering marrying it. The finest blend of chocolate and hot fresh milk. The waitress seemed very happy with our praise. The prices were reasonable and the service was fast. I wouldn't hesitate to come back here again.

We ended up getting a croissant (how boring) which was bagged by a friendly gentleman, paid and devoured on the way down to the harbor. It was definitely one of the best we had and wanted to get some more but already far away and decided to do again on later times. Definitely a place to grab baked goods, gift items and sugary treats for your favorite ones! We stopped in for a quick treat, and I'm so glad we did. I ordered a chocolate croissant and two chocolat chauds... both were fresh, delicious, and NOT overly sweet, which is a massive win for me. The croissant was perfectly flaky with just the right amount of chocolate inside. And that hot chocolate? Smooth, cozy, and so good without being heavy or sugary.
