Visited while on holiday and had a wonderful lunch, excellent service. I asked about music and was told I should come back on Thursday at 9p because it was a vibe, live music jam session with a variety of music; anything from blue, reggae, classic rock, etc. Cue Thursday night, we arrived slightly before 9 and went to the first bar as soon as we walked in. A portly/stocky young man was the bartender, I asked if they had wine and he says we have red or white. Confused as to whether they only had cheap table wine of either red or white, I said red, then he ran down the list of types. Why this couldn't have been done in the first place, I have no idea. My friends ordered beer and we found a spot in the back in front of the fireplace, lots of tables were already filled. The Malbec was terrible, so I returned to the same bar and asked to exchange it for a Carlsberg. He wouldn't exchange, I had no problem paying for a beer. He asked the older man in the striped shirt to get the beer for me while he was giving his two friends, who were making a video doing shots of the Nook's owners Japanese tequila. How do I know it was the owner's tequila? When I inquired about it and how much a shot was, he said it wasn't for sale and it was the owner who is a collector of fine spirits. I hope they pull the CCTV videos.
These same guys were sitting at the first table in the area where my friends I and were. Yes, they were clearly drunk, nothing for me to be alarmed of until it wasn't. They started making loud toast involving the table next to them. One of the young ladies in their group said she was from Atlanta Georgia, then came the repeated use of ni**er from the group. I watched as they became aware of my presence, and said, "Oh, shit! There's one in here!" Three made it a point to look my way, laughing and continuing with their harassing ni**ger banter. No one said anything except laugh until I had enough and walked over asking the punks to repeat what they said. First, they tried to deny it, then came the apologies. One of the girls put her hands on me talking about they're from Youghal, they were locals, what was I doing at their table, etc. My friends, who are in their mid to late 60s, walked over to bring me back to the table and here comes the same chick apologizing, asking what they said, telling me about her 4 black friends, and wanting to give me a hug. B*tch Please! She continued to harass me and my table until I finally asked her to leave repeatedly. We finished our drinks and left.
If you are a minority, not white, this could be a hostile environment/place for you. You will be racially harassed by some drunkard who thinks it's cute to do so. You will not have any support from the people who are in earshot of bigoted, racist names, and banter. I stood up to a table full of men who turned out to be pu$$ies. I figured since the rounder, younger bartender was their friend, he was like them, and wouldn't throw them out if I said something. I, also, didn't know to report this to the garda. My friend's daughter did a report and I have not been contacted. I'm sure it would have been a good night if it weren't for this incident, but it happened and it happened to me. BEWARE! BE AWARE! BE WARNED. RACISM IS ALIVE AND PRESENT IN YOUGHAL IRELAND. IT'S PRESENT HERE! What a shame... read more
