Found this spot thanks to Ashley B's excellent review. (Thanks, Ashley!)…read more
As she describes, the room is minimal, but perfectly comfortable. If you're just looking for a place to sleep and a shower (which we were), this is perfect. The location is also pretty fantastic -- just follow the street and cross the River Salzach to get to the old town.
She's also right about this not being your typical hostel. It's a dorm, in which you'll stay in an available room. We were a little sad we didn't get to hear any musicians practicing. In fact, it was quiet.
As she mentions, there's no soap provided (towels are), but the free internet wasn't available at our stay; there's a pay service on the ground floor, or apparently an internet cafe nearby (I couldn't be bothered to check mail when I had a city to see). We never had breakfast since it's served from 8-9 and we...uh... enjoyed Salzburg after dark.
Finding the place by car was a bit of an adventure. Our directions were perfect; we didn't understand how to get into the pedestrian zone. We knew to look for a barricade and enter a code to gain access, but we expected an arm (like at a train crossing). Instead, it's a cool high-tech post that disappears into the ground to let you pass (we were warned that it comes back up quickly, so hurry through lest the thing come up into the car). Pic attached to help you mentally prepare in case you, like us, have never encountered one of these neatos.
Our stay was all-around exactly what we needed, but the best part of our experience was Sabine's exceptional customer service. She was always cheerful and helpful, and her recommendations led us on delightful adventures. I hope she was amused (not creeped out) by how much I thanked her. (If you're reading this, thanks AGAIN, Sabine! ;)
