As a gin lover and advocate, I believe what Tasmania needs is more gin distilleries, particularly within a day's drive from my house. Thank you, Nonesuch, for acquiescing. The distillery can be found around half an hour out of Hobart, just past Sorell. Nonesuch currently exists as a humble wee thing of a shed on a working farm, but there are a whole hoard of expansions on the horizon. I need no more than a shed, a still, and a whole bunch of gin to be pleased, so I was sorted. Nonesuch first hit my radar a few months back at a little whisky house, hidden over on the small gin shelf (which I made a beeline for, of course). The surprising thing for me was that Nonesuch's champion product is their sloe gin, not just dry gin. They've finally come out with bottled dry gin as well but the sloe is still the hero of the day. Deliciously sweet and perfect on its own over ice! You'll also find a unique sloe MALT for sample and sale at Nonesuch, it's basically a dessert whisky and it's DELICIOUS. Rex the head distiller will take you through all of Nonesuch's offerings and if you're extra lucky you'll get to see the yokel bar, to boot! Keep an eye out for the resident goat. read more

From the Business
Specialties
Nonesuch Distillery produces a range of small batch, hand crafted, distilled spirits and liqueurs at their distillery in rural south east Tasmania. The signature product is a unique Sloe Gin that uses sloes grown around Tasmania. The Blackthorn on which the sloes grow was bought to Tasmania by the early colonial settlers and some of the trees are now over 200 years old. As the sloes are not found in any other state this is something especially Tasmanian. The Sloe Gin, the Dry Gin and the exclusive Sloe Malt are available for tasting.
History
Established in 2014.
The first harvest of sloes was undertaken in 2014 and the first Sloe Gin bottled in June 2015. This product was joined in 2015 by the Nonesuch Sloe Malt which is unique and exclusive to Nonesuch Distillery.
Meet the Business Owner: Rex B.
Having developed an interest in the potential to use native Tasmanian botanicals in flavouring spring water Rex was encouraged to deviate a little and make use of the fruit of the Blackthorn that grows in Tasmania and produce a world quality Sloe Gin. As the distiller Rex has developed the recipe for a gin that works exceptionally well with the tart fruit and extendsd that for use in the other sloe product. Rex is determined that Nonesuch Distillery will produce only the amount of products to which they can devote sufficient attention to in order to make sure they are the best spirits possible.
