I'm so glad we found out about Casa Dolores before our last trip to Santa Barbara…read more I was scrolling through the events calendar to plan our trip and that's how I found out about Casa Dolores and the cool altar they had on display for Dias de los Muertos (it was on display for more than a week!). I was surprised I didn't find out about Casa Dolores during our previous visits to Santa Barbara, but it's always nice to discover a new place to visit in a town you've seen a lot of other attractions before. Casa Dolores is a small museum that focuses on Mexican Folk Art. It's situated in the downtown area, just minutes away from State Street, tucked away on Bath St. You can walk from State street, take Figueroa down and turn left on Bath. Casa Dolores is located in a small, old adobe house, nicely renovated. It has a cute courtyard in the back, so check it out. On the main level they host temporary exhibits (we loved their "Art Made out of Tin" exhibit they have on display right now). Upstairs, they have their permanent collection, very nice pottery from Oaxaca and other places in Mexico, and other interesting folk art. If you're in the area and you're looking for a nice activity to do for half an hour- an hour in the downtown SB, Casa Dolores is a cute place to visit. It could be a great break from all the hustle and bustle of the shopping area. The museum is a quiet and relaxing place to get away from it all. We enjoyed our visit, the Mexican folk art on display, their Dias de los Muertos altar (great idea). The staff couldn't be nicer, too bad I didn't get the name of the young lady that works there that showed us around, gave us information about the place, the art on display, she couldn't be nicer, we enjoyed our chat with her. Also, there's no fee to visit the museum. It's open Tuesdays through Saturdays, Noon-4pm. Check out their site for more info. We'd like to go back on our next visit to Santa Barbara and check out their future temporary exhibit.

Some history about Chumash Indians who were estimated to have been around for 10,000+ years. An interesting film about Japanese Americans & internment camps - I didnt get to watch the whole film as it was kind of long but had me wonder about what they must have gone through & how awful things must have been for them. People are resilient though. They lose everything but rise above all the hardships & persevere. In the film, one man was talking about his grandfather who was in the internment camp & tried to fight for their rights, was sent to jail for speaking up, etc. He said, with a smile, " My grandfather was a bada**". He sounded very proud. To pass that legacy down, that grandfather did much more than just fight for his rights. History provides us an opportunity to reflect & appreciate all those who came before us & what they've accomplished. Surviving was a great feat!!

It doesn't take a long time to visit - unless of course you're feeling spendy - but it's a pleasant stop in a beautiful walkable part of Santa Barbara. The art is modern, and on my visit I enjoyed a nice display of geometric art in front and some cool optical illusion art in a room with a giant bead curtain in the back. The middle room held more picturesque art, paintings with people and scenes of bustling cities. That's as descriptive as I can wax as I am no art critic, but Sullivan Goss is definitely worth a look if you're in the mood for a quick diversion.

Kudos! Second, the hostess / cashier was extremely welcoming, informative, and gracious. She was happy to see us, which is always a nice feeling. She let us know that there was a group meeting down in the basement about to get started in 7 minutes, but that we could go down there to see a collection of weavings on display. We popped down to check them out. While not mind-blowing, it was a fairly extensive grouping of closely woven pieces of varying size and design. Back up on the main floor they had their current traveling exhibit of artwork from the collection of the Mullin Automotive Museum. The varied works of photography and paintings in various media are as striking as the autos that inspired them. Well worth experiencing for those who love the sleek lines and elegant components of classic cars. Having been to the Mullin, I don't remember the artwork as much as the cars, which suggests that highlighting the art is a worthwhile endeavor. Because these works were not the property of the Carnegie, but rather on loan, photography was not allowed. Up on the second floor, selfies only were recommended, but photos of the museum's permanent collection were okay. The current selections are of the plein air style, with emphasis on California subjects. Cornelis Botke (husband of Jessie Arms Botke, noted Ventura County painter) is represented with one of his landscapes. I thought I recognized the Botke name. Jessie Arms Botke's works are currently featured at the Santa Paula Art Museum. There is a fair amount of unused space, especially on the second floor. Portable display walls could be utilized to expand the number of works available to see. I suppose lighting could be a challenge, but they could surely figure it out. The building itself, in neoclassical style, was the former Oxnard City Library. It presents a grand facade in downtown Oxnard, adjacent to Plaza Park. Free parking in their own lot and adjacent streets. We saw a fashion photo shoot happening out front when we arrived, and it does make a statement as an architecture background. I understand that it's a popular place for photography. As we were leaving, the hostess mentioned that around the corner is their "Artist in Residence" venue, and suggested that we check it out. The current group of pieces there are mostly focused on photographs, and are vibrant, youth-focused, and often raw in emotion and subject matter. Worth checking out, especially for anyone who thinks that art museums are "stuffy".
