The Nobu super-premium brand comes with high expectations and prices. Less than perfect is simply not good enough. To be clear, this would have been a four-star review elsewhere (and should have been a 5-star review).
First the good: The staff was very attentive, friendly and accommodating. The bar was spectacular as was the entrance and staircase.
Now for bad: The food should have been better. Our order came out quickly--too quickly. For example: we ordered the beef tacos. The beef was dry and lukewarm. What should have been a positive (five tacos came out instead of the menu stated two) was a negative because we didn't particularly care for the taco--a Nobu signature app. We ordered the salmon skewers which were cooked to perfection and then cooked some more. I don't want to relive the experience so I don't want to think about what else was ordered (sushi, sashimi, rolls etc.). To be clear, this isn't the form of memory that is the typical memorable Nobu experience.
And finally for the ugly: The Nobu size bill arrived and I wanted to charge it to the room. "Sorry sir" I was told by the waitress. "Nobu is a different company and while it's owned by the same owner as the hotel, we need to charge you now". Out came the credit card but not before my pointing out that the hotel assessed a 10% service charge. So I asked the waitress about who told her to say what she said and she cited management. I suggested that the explanation she was asked to parrot had a singular American-English word that was very applicable: "bullsh*t".
Nobu Istanbul opened a short while ago and the kitchen is clumsy. The bus staff was clumsy too. Server staff had to navigate a cafeteria-looking room with a spectacular view of the Bosporus, around support staff tripping all over themselves. The kitchen served Asian-fusion dishes in line with a mediocre fast-food restaurant.
To end on a high note, we consumed what was left of our half bottle of bubbly at Nobu Istanbul's downstairs bar located one flight below the restaurant on the same floor as the entrance. Staff, ambiance, service and aesthetics were spectacular (five-star review for the Nobu Instanbul Bar coming soon)
I hope to return sometime in the future when the restaurant gets into a groove. In the meantime, prices, in my opinion, should be "at cost". read more
