It's counter service. Weekend breakfast begins at 10am. At that time a swarm of dwellers will descend upon the counter to make sure their breakfast is accounted for. Join the queue and patiently wait (it moves pretty fast and they are very friendly and efficient). Grab a tray, order your menu items and coffees/teas, pick up drinks, sit down, grab cutlery/water/napkins, wait, food arrives. It's really all rather smooth, honestly. In fact, I'd venture to say I like this way BETTER than table service. No tracking down the check when you are ready to depart, just up and leave. Bravo! The Farmhouse Breakfast was gorgeous (see photo) and the Belgian Waffles with bacon and maple syrup were divine (though our toddler was hesitant to share, I don't blame him!). Brother in law enjoyed the Benedict and basically licked the plate. My flat white was intense and necessary. Everything was, simply put, perfect. On a nice day there are plenty of outside seats and its perfectly placed nearly ON the beach, so the views are stellar. It is the only thing around for miles, so enjoy it. The setting is pristine. If its rainy and windy (which it was), the covering is quite sufficient and seats many "inside." All this for about £50. Our best meal in the area, would definitely return.

Well, it was a good thing we did, since we didn't get to go back for afternoon tea... Just as the name suggests, it is located right by the canal. It was very picturesque, peaceful and relaxing. They also have seating upstairs, and had histories on the canal, with photos posted all around the wall. Their cakes looked amazing, but I decided not to order any dessert on this day. Yes I know, a big mistake! Our friend ordered Heavenly Hot Chocolate, and it looked so pretty! We went with Teashop House Blend Tea, and Earl Grey. The young boy who brought the teas (I hear this is a family-run business) was trying to very careful not to mix them up. But the funny thing was, he totally mixed the tea up! LOL. We didn't realize until half way through... I thought the House Blend tea tasted so much like Earl Grey. For lunch, we had Ham, Cheese & Chutney Sandwich and Eggs Benedict. They were both tasty, nice portion, and filling. Our friend went with something healthier, and ordered one of their vegan sandwiches. It is nice to have that option if you want or need vegan dish. We had a nice quick lunch here. It was adorable and cozy. The food was good, not amazing, but good. I think the sweets might be better than the actual food...I will never know, unless I go back! Lesson learned: don't never expect your plan to go just the way you planned them...and have your dessert first!

Definitely avoid waisting your money and time here unless you happen to come during off season or…read morewhen there aren't any tours going. This is the classic example of a cafe/restaurant located in a tourist space with no skillset to actually manage it when it has a crowd or tours. Not sure how this can be? I get little cafes in small towns not expecting crowds but this is literally a famous house and gardens tour site that expects regular business. Everyone there acted like they were brand new to serving 15 full tables during lunch hour on a Friday. Watching everyone run around like their heads cut off was disappointing and as a result everyone had lousy service. Plain and simple it took close to 40 minutes to get a lemonade and a cider. Had this literally not been the only restaurant on the grounds to get a drink I would have gotten up and left. Took about 15-20 minutes of me sitting to get my drink order taken. They had no rhyme or reason to what they were doing. It was a free for all on who got service. They don't honor the order in which tables were seated. Like I noted I waited 15 minutes of the rude "head server" to take my drink order yet a table who sat next to me waited 5 minutes and drink orders were taken. But god forbid after seeing this I attempted to wave the waitress down and then she rudely snapped "I was coming". Ew. Another 15-20 minutes the cider and lemonade came sparing me 10 minutes to drink it before my coach left. Wonderful. Haha. So yeah. If you want trash service and to wait 40 minutes for drinks this spot is for you. They are lucky they are the only place to order a drink/food here or else I don't think anyone would come. So many tables were cranky and disappointed in the service. I listened to every table around me complain and feel frustrated. Not a great dining atmosphere with so many unhappy customers. When staff act feisty it just makes it worse because it's not the customers fault. Anyways, happy I had a cold cider that was tasty but they literally just handed me a cold glass and bottle. Not much skills there but it is what it is. If you see this before coming to Athelhampton house definitely eat before or make plans for something after. If you come when no one is here then maybe you'll be okay.

The menu includes sandwiches as well as 'proper' food. We had tempura duck with cha sui dressing, and a Dorset crepe with mushrooms, cream and blue vinny cheese. Both were very acceptable, although this has the ambience, service and presentation of a cafeteria, not a proper restaurant (salad treated as a garnish with no vinaigrette, for example, and a mound of catering pack chips). There is a bar, with well kept Palmers ale. Lunch was £23 for two. Later, after a wonderful tour of the house and garden, we returned for a cream tea with clotted cream. They also do gluten free cakes. Not worth a special trip, but a welcome adjunct to the house and gardens. Does weddings too.
