A little late to the review but here goes. Was finally able to book tickets for the Christmas train this year (2023). The instructions in the email were precise and helpful. There are a couple options for the coaches for the general tickets. We chose to sit in the covered coach. Best thing is, once the train is in motion, you can walk around the train and go to the snack/gift shop coach. We then just stood in one of the open sections sipping coffee/hot chocolate. Got a good view of the train when it made turns. The train is beautiful lit inside and out. Kids had a lot of fun. Would definitely recommend trying this train ride.

Great tourist train! Took the kids and grandkids on a Saturday morning ride. The weather was perfect. We sat out side. The benches held all 11 of us. The rails were a perfect height. The 2 year olds could look through to see the horses and cows as we passed. There are a few bridges to cross and the creek below had water. The conductors and other volunteers were friendly. There are snacks available. All in all a great family outing.

Staff are helpful, kind and fun! Train is all decorated with Christmas lights inside & outside of train. You can bring on whatever food & drinks you want. I thought we would see lights outside of the train, but you do not. Lots of adorable kids, some cold, tired & cranky. But most were really enjoying it. I recommend sitting in the open cars, the enclosed ones we dusty & noisy. I would give it 4 stars, but I expected more. So that could be me. If I had little ones, I would make it a tradition if they enjoyed themselves! I say you should do it to see if it's your thing! Happy Holidays!

Train of Lights -- bought dome tickets early October online. Upon arrival, claim train passes from the ticket booth near the entrance gate. Dome ticket holders have different boarding access. Regular ticket holders' boarding access have long lines. Dome ticket holders are best to park farther from the entrance gate as the boarding area is farthest from the entrance gate. We arrived at 7 for a 7:30 boarding and had plenty of time to get the tickets and board the dome area. Upon arrival of the train, crew will advise to get your phones ready to take a video of the completely lit train. Regular tickets holders don't have access to the dome area which has climate control seating area, bar with free drinks (we only had non alcoholic drinks) and unlimited cookies. Cafe has $1 items (drinks, cookies and chips). Dome ticket holders just need to show wristband to get designated free items. Bring dollar bills. You can also bring your own food. We brought Habit burger. You don't have to buy the dome tickets. The train ride itself is fun-- though it can get cold in regular seating areas. So layer up. Best to bring blankets for regular seating area. There are also quick history talks and merchandise store to buy shirts/mugs/key chains etc.

Lines of people packed together to board the train

This review is only for the holiday train of lights. My family took the 730pm train, and while the train itself was decked out in lights, there really was not anything to see along the way. The cider and hot chocolate was only a dollar, which was great and added to the experience. The reason I docked it two stars was because the train was packed with people, so it didn't seem that safe from a Covid perspective. Also, they didn't really enforce their mask policy because we saw several people get on the train with no mask on. That said, perhaps the earlier train (one is offered at 430 pm) in a post-Covid environment would be more fun. We also expected carols/singing or something, but the car we were in had no music.

Our caboose!
Rebecca H.

It was pricy to rent the caboose, but it allowed us up to 20 people and we brought drinks and snacks. Given it was raining it made our trip comfortable and dry! We had a caboose host with us who was fun and chatty. If you have a big group consider renting the caboose! Get there early because parking is tight.

They have all kinds of screenings of great films. I just caught It's a Wonderful Life (1946) and intend to come back for Wild Strawberries (1957) and maybe The General (1926) next week. The theater seats are somewhat uncomfortable and the patrons are mostly really old white Boomers, but the latter is understandable given the subject matter and the usual demographic of people interested in this sort of thing. (Plus the general exodus of younger whites from California over the past 10 years and especially since COVID. It's a bit of a bummer for me because it's now much tougher for me to get a white girlfriend. Not that non-white girls aren't wonderful, but you know, I could just go abroad for a better and frankly higher-quality selection. I'm in America for my white girl.) The husband-wife team who run this place (Tony and Rhonda) are great, and everyone's extremely nice. I wish the gift shop had a better selection of old books though. Most of the Blu-rays on sale are superfluous with a Criterion Channel subscription, and the books on sale are pretty boring and seem to be ad hoc sales from people's used book collections. I haven't actually been to the museum proper yet (they're only open weekends 12-4 and I tend to only really wake up on weekend evenings/nights), but I love any theater that airs old films. Those are few and far between these days. The only other ones I know of in the Bay Area are in San Francisco. Once again, I'm totally shocked something like this is in Fremont.

Much of the experience involved long lecture segments in a quiet, echo-heavy church environment, and many students struggled to remain engaged or even follow portions of the presentation clearly. The larger issue was logistics and time management. Our tour was scheduled to end at noon but was still actively running around 12:30, which compressed lunch into only a few rushed minutes before buses needed to depart. Departure became chaotic because the gift shop remained fully active during bus loading, making it extremely difficult for teachers to regroup students and leave on time. I appreciate the historical importance of the site, but future elementary field trip groups should be aware that the pacing, scheduling, and transition management may not align well with the realities of supervising large groups of 4th graders on a tight school schedule.

Allow me to introduce myself…read more.. My name is Chad Stein and I am a professional photographer (voted "Best Photographer" in the "Best Of Fremont Awards" 10 years in a row), multi-business owner, resident of Fremont since 1989, what many consider to be one of "the faces of Fremont" and what I humbly consider to be the biggest proponent of this city. The reason for that verbose and borderline-braggadocious introduction was to show how "Fremont" I am (and what I typed was just a drop in the bucket). With that being said, in all of my years wandering this city and knowing every nook and cranny, I did not know about the museum until it caught my eye while driving through the area back in October. Shortly thereafter (and very coincidentally), one of my clients mentioned it to me a few days later as well. It was at that moment that we decided that we would pay it a visit. Yesterday (January 14th, 2026), we did just that. I honestly didn't know what to expect before entering the door, but I was excited nonetheless. Shortly after walking inside, we were greeted by Barbara, whom is one of the volunteer docents. Being that it was a Wednesday, guided-tours were not available. However, Barbara decided that the day of the week was just that and a guided tour was on the menu! My client/friend and I were given a roughly 75 minute tour of the facility. Prior to yesterday, I thought that I knew a lot about Fremont, it turns out that there was so much more to learn! The museum touched on a lot of how things in the city received their names as well as the history behind a lot of places that were once in the city as well as some that still are. There are plenty of physical objects to look at (and you can even touch some) as well as plenty of documents/signage to read. After the tour was over, we spent roughly another hour exploring on our own. There is no fee to enter, but there is a box for donations if you feel inclined to give. They also offer a membership option which has some perks. The staff are all volunteers, so please keep that in-mind. Whether you're a lover of Fremont or just a history buff, I highly recommend checking out this establishment. Last and definitely not least, I'd like to give a HUGE shout out and thank you to Barbara. Her wealth of knowledge and personality made the experience that much better!

Old toys, typewriters, cameras, recording devices, and phones galore. A "School Days" museum section showcasing nostalgic pieces like tin lunchboxes, children's books, and even a classic pee-chee folder. A glass case containing Washington High School (first high school in Fremont) items donated by John Gomes and family, an early resident of Washington Township. Also, a "Transportation" museum section which included an 1890's doctor's buggy from a barn at Ardenwood Farm, among other things. Interactive exhibits, like signs prompting visitors to name jobs people did in the 1900's vs today, or to identify projector parts on the Century Theater Projector on display. My fave piece of history in the museum was about Niles Film Making and Charlie Chaplin's contract signing with Essanay. Lots to see and learn at your own pace, with a staff member available to answer any questions. There's also a restroom on site, if needed. Plus, if you visit on the 2nd Saturday of the month, afterward you can head over to the Ohlone Flea Market up the street, offering lots of quirky goods for your bargain shopping pleasure.
