I suffered a number of retinal tears caused by a vitreous detachment almost immediately following my surgery, Dougherty never followed up with me, not even after having several more surgeries to repair my retinal tears that took place at the same DLV location. To this day my eyesight is a mess with very little to no improvement. To the best of my knowledge some of the specialized high-tech devices that I was entitled to were not used at the time my surgery was performed. In my opinion, DLV and Dougherty are all about patient count and not patient care. I strongly urge anyone seeking treatment to find it elsewhere.

Waiting 4 months for an eye appt is crazy. We went to an optometrist instead. I get that unexpected plans pop up but if you know you're booking 3 months out you should have your vacations planned at least that far in advance.

I chose Dr Tennen because not only was she is a very good Dr (There are lots of good Drs who know their specialty) but because on top of being a fantastic Dr, she was the best communicator I met with. In fact, i live out of state and was recommended to her and after speaking on the phone decided to literally fly in for the procedure because she was so much better than the Dr's i interviewed in my hometown. She told me exactly what to expect, both good and bad, each step of the way. From Pre to Post op I experienced exactly what she said I would and it was comforting to know exactly what would happen next, how it would feel, what was happening, and why. Having Lasik feel like a scary thing upfront, but having a good Dr removes so much of the concern. When you have a good Dr that is also a great communicator, i can tell you the experience was awesome. Im 3 weeks into my post op and my experience has been great thanks to knowing what was going to happen and why. I would highly recommend her. (As a bonus her staff was really friendly to my 3 year old son who came in with my wife and I for the treatments. They were busy but always polite, which is sometimes hard with a 3 year old running around.)

Worst attitude of all the doctors I have seen in my life (and I have seen many doctors). Very short with you. Rude, know it all vibe, and no empathy toward my concerns. I felt like a kid the way she talked to me like she knew everything and my concerns were invalid. I asked questions and she'd flippantly respond (bordering implying I was delusional). I was stunned. People like her should never be in medicine where the goal is to empathize and brainstorm solutions to patient concerns and not downplay their worries and give vague guidance for addressing such worries.

I have been going to Dr. Henteleff since 1987. That should speak volumes in and of itself, but…read morewhen I lived in San Diego I would drive as much as 4 hours to see Steven, and when I lived in San Francisco I would either fly or drive to Westlake Village so I could continue to be a patient of his. Obviously, there are thousands of Optometrists between "Smog" Angeles and San Francisco, but for my money Steven stands head and shoulders above the crowd. 3 years ago I had a vision plan which was only honored by "Lens Crappers" and "America's Breast Contacts and Eyeglasses." I really didn't like the "corporate assembly line" approach "Lens Shafters" "treats" their patients to. At "America's Jest," I felt very uncomfortable sitting in the waiting room with all the welfare recipients. Also, I could hardly understand what the Optometrist was saying because English was his second (or third or fourth of fifth) language. At one point, he confused the word "Laxative" with "contacts." I left the appointment thinking my eyes had "the runs," and spent the next 4 hours looking for "Depends" which fit my eyes (I FINALLY found them at Costco). Seriously, however, the "mega corporate" Optometric stores aren't for me. I wear multi-focal contacts, and while I like them very much, they tend to be subject to manufacturing defects. If I put a new lens in and it's irritating my eye, Steven will replace them. Try that with the monolithic, bureaucratic corporate Optometrists. Those chain stores are usually owned by big insurance companies who put profits before patients and don't have our best interests at heart. Their goal is to get as much out of their employees as possible while paying them as little as they can. I don't want to meet with a new Optometrist every time I get an eye exam, and I sure as hell don't want to talk to a stranger who doesn't know me from Adam if I have a problem with my eyes!!! For me, I want a personal relationship with all my health care professionals. My health is too important to risk with someone who went to medical school in Timbuctoo. Time, patience and clear communication is the stock-in-trade of any professional, and Steven takes his time with his patients. As a result, I take the time to go see him, even though I live hundreds of miles away. In sum, I've seen Steven for over 30 years . . . and you should too!

circa 2007 So, I went a year later, for my annual checkup -…read moreand found that my prescription hadn't changed the slightest bit in a year. This is the first time in the 12 years that I've been wearing contacts that this has happened. This alone speaks multitudes for the exactness of the prescription that Dr. Henteleff found last year - which suited my eyes so well throughout the year. I love his optometrist! --- circa 2006 My wife, the Cal alumna, goes to Steven Henteleff to have her eyes checked, and thus I too (despite being a strong USC supporter) went to Dr. Henteleff to have my annual eye checkup. So what distinguishes Steven Henteleff are the following two things (which is why I knew he deserved a 5/5 rating): Reason #1 - In the 10+ years that I have been using contact lenses, no optometrist has ever done a glaucoma test (where they put some solution in your eye to dilate them), AND THEN followed it up with a 2nd solution to reverse the dilatory effects. This means that instead of me having to wear goofy fake plastic goggles for 5-6 hours, I only had to wear them for a little over an hour. I asked if this was a new innovation (since I'd never had ANY optometrist do that for me), and he said no - he's been doing this for 5+ years after he received some good feedback from some patients; he says most optometrists don't do this because they don't care about their patients' comfort as much. Clearly Steven does. Reason #2 - Chain stores usually delegate one of the tests to a technician that uses a machine that blows air into your eye, which is a very uncomfortable experience (at least for me). Steven uses another more advanced machine that does NOT blow air into your eye, and he said it also provides better readings. That makes sense. If I'm not covering from fear of a gush of air blowing into my eye, I'd be so much more relaxed w/ the optometrist doing a test - that would lead to better readings. While these may seem trivial - these are indicative of why I am SO impressed by Steven - and additionally he has a wonderful sense of humor - which is always a huge benefit. I'm glad I listened to my wife's recommendation.
