Gayle and I just returned from Ashland, and greatly enjoyed the following plays: A Midsummer…read moreNight's Dream, Come From Away, Smote This, King Hedley II, and Yellow Face. Gayle and I tried to force rate our play experiences which we found to be nearly impossible. In fact, the ones that we rated lower, were the ones that we'd love to see again. We also attended the 2025 productions of Julius Caesar, Jitney, Fat Ham, and As You Like It. We really think that OSF is on the up and up again (especially after the Save Our Season plea in 2023), and we look forward to the 2027 Season. We've already already booked our Hotel room and have our Presale order ready. A Loco-Motive For Murder anyone? Reflecting back, we have really appreciated the acting company in general, and Kevin Kennerly in particular. It was his version of MacBeth that brought us back to Ashland the 2nd time in 2024 and was so so good in the August Wilson plays (Jitney and King Hedley II). He's not the only distinctive star of course (such as Nell Geisslinger, Rodney Gardiner, or even Justin Huertas, among others), but we do remember actors that we'd love to see in almost anything.

Tim Bond knows what he's doing, so hope abounds. OSF no longer has a "resident playwright", presumably due to budget cuts, but that's not all bad as the previous RP was, ahem ... It's hard to imagine the days of sellouts and top grade actors returning, although next year has a Bedard/ Tufts collaboration, and that WILL sell out! This year the emphasis on flashiness ramped up a bit as Taming of the Shrew got good and frantic. No Covid, no wildfires, no Garrett garbage, so where are the playgoers? The stories being told are too often CRAP! Membership has dropped in half. HUH? New plays can be terrific, but year after year of klunky choices is at least partially to blame. This year: Come From Joy. Oh baby! And it was good to see Aunt Ester back on the stage. Remember her in 2007's Gem Of the Ocean? How about some Mamet, Fugard, Odets? It does NOT have to be ancient, but it oughta appeal to the ... oh, never mind. Just stop the nonsense and ... * There ARE promising young actors. I'll give you 6-1 that Nedderson shows up in A LOCO-MOTIVE FOR MURDER. There IS hope.

They have yeast to put on top, add extra butter if you want....it was AMAZING!!! Was amazing, the last two times I've been to this theater the popcorn is just plain bad. It's just not fun to go to the movies when the popcorn tastes day old. Help, bring back the OG popcorn.

I simply could not recommend this festival experience enough…read more I used to live in Ashland and this event is the thing still that prompts me to go back and visit every year. It's such a unique film festival experience and its such a great town. The films are incredibly well curated, the people involved are uncommonly kind and fun, the town is adorable, supportive and WALKABLE, and the festival is the perfect size to make it feel like you've all gone to film camp for 5 days. And you don't have to be a film geek to have a ball! My 28 year old sister and my 55 year old mother both had a great time and neither are students of film, but both enjoyed the temporary 5-day community that they got to feel a part of. Did I mention WALKABLE? No shuttles or buses to catch. Kinda unheard of when it comes to most festivals. For the full experience, I would recommend: 1) Go see some shorts! Its so rare you get to see shorts in a theater, I highly recommend taking advantage the opportunity. And there are some incredible story tellers that show their work there. 2) Go out to the designated after hours spot at least one of the nights. Tons of folks gather there, including filmmakers, volunteers, staff and film-goers. The conversations there are rich, passionate, inspiring and authentic. 3) Take advantage of the "Talks". There are some great panels that are fantastic opportunities to learn and hear about independent filmmaking. Always a highlight of the festival. 4) See a film at the Armory. There's great food there and it's actually kind of a cool place to see a film. 5) See a film in one of the really small theaters~ there aren't many places you can go to a theater that is that small.

Additional drink cards were only $5 to get another 5 pours. You had the choice of anything in the parking lot or the full tap list inside OPPA. The downside was that water was hard to find outside, we were told to look for pitchers and glasses but didn't see any. You can go inside and get water - all the waitresses were cool with it except the one with the bleach blonde hair who just wanted to make tips. The local radio station was out playing music and there was an inaugural corn hole tournament. Trash can beer pong was also offered but it was a bit too hot for people to take advantage of. They set up canopies for shade but there was only one with seating. The lack of seating in shaded areas and access to water knocked it from 5 to 4. Well done considering it was a well done event. Raniblu and Mystique (nicknames?) are the two best waitresses here, ask for them if you can.
