This won't be a great review I'm afraid. Before I start, this'll sound like some poncy type whose used to eating in restaurants where a starter of soup and a roll will set you back fifteen quid, but I'm not, I'm just a very disappointed customer.
Well to be honest, I've had better to put it mildly. The last few times I've had stuff from Nicky's, fish in particular, the batter has been hard and chewy, and the fish itself has been overcooked, leaving hard rubbery bits around the edges.
I had the same problem with the batter when ordering a battered sausage on another occasion. In other respects, cleanliness and so on, Nicky's is great, but just lately, the quality of the food has dropped massively. Maybe I just had bad luck, I hope so, but I've just done my best with a pea mix and fish from there, and without exaggerating, I can say quite honestly it's the worst meal of fish chips and peas I can ever remember having. For the best part of seven quid, I expect more than dry overcooked food. I wasn't actually there to buy it, but it tasted like it'd been sat in one of those glass cabinets for the whole day, drying out and crisping up to the point where it was like eating petrified fan belt.
I ended up leaving almost half of it.
They used to be great, but lately, in my view they've gone through the floor. They're praised the city over for being there for when the masses flock out of the nightclubs on a friday and saturday night, but unless they sort themselves out, the only people they'll be able to sell to are those who stagger through the door having spent the last three or four hours drinking, and honestly don't care a hoot what the quality is of the food they're served.
Sorry, Nicky's, but I'm not going to be charged almost seven quid for the quality of what I attempted to eat tonight. I know it's 'only' fish and chips, but c'mon, at least have a go. read more
