I had tremendous results from only 5 sessions! Katie and Nick got me walking and fixed my range-of-motion in the knee after I tore my outer quad muscle a few weeks back. R.I.C.E. had been effective on the injury pain but I walked in a loose, crazy way that was hurting my leg everywhere else. They got right to the root cause and showed me exercises to reconnect my brain to my muscles so that I could walk AND stretches to improve range of motion and strength in the injured muscle. When I hobbled into Nick's PT office I could barely move and was in enormous pain. Not only was my lower back hurting but my hip felt like it had been locked and set on fire. Nick quickly diagnosed me and realized that my right BUTT muscle was NOT WORKING and all of the other muscles around my hip were compensating, but had finally had enough. How long had I gone without a working Gluteus Maximus? With treatment (including electro-shock therapy), easy-to-follow directions, regular visits, and lots of support and encouragement, Nick and Margo fixed my (physical) issues. I can't thank them enough. They also helped me with a few other problems we discovered as I healed. I am now able to stand up, walk stairs, and even run again--after not being able to walk without a significant limp. They were so understanding and very supportive, making me feel like I'm a part of their family. Nick's staff even played with my two toddlers while I received my regular treatments. I was referred to Nick by my neurologist for back pain due to spinal stenosis. He is fun to work with and very encouraging. I always felt I was getting quality evaluations and therapies, based on current medical science. He was helpful in making me see what exercises and activities I could do to improve back pain but also what to avoid that was making me worse. STAY AWAY - MISLEADING, DECEPTIVE, DISHONEST I will not be returning to Nick Rinard Physical Therapy (NRPT) due to their dishonest billing practices. My primary care physician referred me to NRPT and sent my information to them. NRPT called me a couple times to set up an appointment. I checked with my insurance and discovered NRPT is out of network. I called NRPT and told them "Sorry, I won't be scheduling with you as you are not out of network". The billing office then contacted me and left a message. They said that wasn't a problem being out of network - essentially, "we reviewed your info and it will only cost you $20 per visit". With that info I went ahead and scheduled. We just received our first bill from NRPT for Aug 7-Aug 28. The statement date is Sep 26. The amount due is more than double what they "estimated". When I called them to talk about the bill, they said "Sorry, your insurance company didn't cover very much but you signed the agreement that said we can collect any difference". In addition, the billing states that we are past due 30 days on a portion. We have a number of visits in September that we wouldn't have scheduled had they billed us in a timely fashion. read more

I give them 2 stars only because the therapists are good and caring. Their billing department, though, leaves a lot to be desired. After telling me they will check on insurance (I had double coverage) they charged me $20 a visit. Then, 6 months later I get a whopping bill as insurance did not cover most of the therapy. They would not negotiate or budge and sent it to collections. Strong-arm, bullying tactics. All they needed to do was contact insurance in a timely manner so I didn't keep racking up almost $150/visit. Unbelievable. read more

If you are at the point where normal PT, steroid injections and endless stretches don't solve your lower back problem, you can feel pretty desperate. And as a former yoga teacher, I can tell you I'd never trust another yoga teacher to give advice on back injuries. I trust PT's and steer clear of yogis for helping with these issues. I would give MDT 5 stars for how they administer patients, do the paperwork up front, explain how it all works with insurance, etc and the overall kindness and presence exhibited by all the providers and staff. I should also include the caveat that if you are unhappy with your progress, you need to be proactive and try another therapist here. They are all good. At the beginning, the assessment progress was very thorough and I agree with other reviewers that these providers seem to know their anatomy. 2 simple exercises were provided (as opposed to the slew of tasks that normal PT involves) and I found them to be effective. All went well for my first 4 or so visits and I made good progress. Then, we added some stabilizing exercises but that re-inflamed muscles around the disc. I just wasn't ready for it. They recognized that and made adjustments. The breakthrough came in the fifth session where we analyzed the causes of my 'relapse' and looked at my workout. Nick was so helpful in suggesting adjustments to both my posture and my workout. I feel more confident and know what to do in case of a re-injury, which is par for the course with herniated discs. But I have the tools to recover faster and to reduce the chances for hurting myself. Peace of mind and practical application. Good results in less time than traditional PR. If you're hurting, try them. Don't give up. read more

After some persuasion to try his clinic and approach before evaluating options with the orthopedic surgeon, we took our daughter to Nick's office to address an ailing knee and some (related) ankle tenderness. I'm happy to say that she's made a full recovery following their recommended treatment plan and is back to full strength in her athletic pursuits after several visits. Questional billing practices.... I had one visit with Nick. We had an hour appointment and the exercises he gave me did seem to help with my pain. My concern is with billing practices. Before my appointment, I had called the office and talked about insurance and had been given a price. When I came into the office, I paid that price at the desk. Later, I was billed for more. It wasn't much, ~ $40. But it gave me a bad impression and I didn't want to come back. read more

I sprained my ankle and let it heal on its own for six weeks before I sought treatment at MDT. The ankle was fine-it healed almost completely except for the fact that if I stepped off-balance at all it would almost make me collapse. Within one or two visits my ankle was healing. Maybe six visits later it was almost perfect again-all I needed was to do the home exercises they prescribed for me. A few weeks of doing those exercises and I was healed! DO NOT USE NICK RINARD PHYSICAL THERAPY!!!! I was referred to Nick Rinard Physical Therapy by my PCP in August 2018. My provider chose this therapist because he was in network. My primary insurance Pacific Source doesn't cover but secondary, Blue Cross Blue Shield, does. I completed 9 sessions and paid $30 copay for each visit. The billing office entered BCBS as my primary insurance instead of my secondary and billing was delayed as a result. I began to get bills for the entire balance instead of the 80%. When I called Rinard's office they told me not to pay anything while they fixed the issue. I continued to get bills monthly and every time I called, they continued to advise me not to pay. I got a notice that my account was delinquent and I called BCBS to figure out what was going on and they said they were waiting on an explanation of benefits from my primary before they would cover. I told the billing office this and they agreed to fax the EOB but continued to advise me not to pay. A couple months later I got a notice that my bill was sent to collections. I called Rinard and they said they tried ONCE to fax the EOB but "it didn't go through". They didn't try again or tell me there was a problem before they sent me to collections and this is after I repeatedly called to make sure I didn't owe anything. I am so frustrated! When I called the billing dept to ask why I was getting bills from collections, I was told 'it's your problem' and laughed at me then told me 'just calm down and pay it'. I take pride in paying my bills on time and have excellent credit so knowing that my credit will suffer when I tried to take care of this is upsetting. I faxed the EOB myself after this and BCBS will cover 80% but my credit is already affected. Every negative review I've read involves similar experiences with billing and it is not ok. I feel completely helpless and I don't want anyone else to have to go through this. I also called Nick Rinard directly to discuss and he never returned my call. I am now being taken to court by collections. The therapy was good but totally not worth the billing headache! read more

I have gone to Nick Rinard PT for around ten years. His office staff have been consistently kind and efficient. The different therapists I've seen over the years are compassionate and insightful. I have some uncommon back issues, and the therapists' training and determination is very clear. Let me start by saying how much of a skeptic I was of Physical Therapy. I had gone to two other PT's in the Portland area, leaving in worse condition than how I arrived. After failed attempts in taking muscle relaxers and pain killers, my primary care physician suggested I try Nick Rinard Physical Therapy. I had a bulging disc in my back that was extremely limiting not to mention very painful. Nick was quick to diagnose and treat my bulging disc by incorporating exercise and a very thorough treatment plan. I have zero qualms about physical therapy only because of Nick and my experience with his staff (Courtney). So professional, courteous, and not shy of pushing me outside of my comfort level. When I first contacted Nick Rinard's office (then called MDT= Mechanical Diagnostic Therapies) to begin my physical therapy, I asked if they were in my insurance network? They said yes. When I got to the clinic I asked again. Apparently I didn't ask the Right questions. It should've been, "Is the independant contracted therapist considered an in-network provider?" The answer would've been "No." Since that was not divulged to me, or even a thought to ask, I received a shocking bill 4 YEARS after my sessions ended. The therapy took place in 2010. My bill arrived in 2014! I paid it off in 2015 or would've had my credit recorded marred. [The accounting manager did her best to assertively work with me, while I made mos. and mos. of unbudgeted payments. Frankly, she's the only reason I gave them a star @ all.] Additionally, near the end of my physical therapy appts., Nick Rinard asked me to step into a private office to tell me he was a better therapist than my therapist. It was extremely uncomfortable to watch my therapist walk past the window and look @ me curiously, at the moment 'his boss' was trying to lobby to switch my business. I told Nick "No thanks!" This is my second review for this business because they have been so incredibly helpful in quickly identifying the source of enormous pain and giving me stretches that I can control and do. I see improvement immediately and they work long-term. I have learned about the anatomy of the back and neck through Nick. Recently, I went back in to see him for a constant year-long neck and upper back pain. I was in a car accident- a car rammed into our car pushing us into another car. My neck was jeered really badly as I was sitting stiffly in the car when we were hit. I just thought I'd have to deal with it. I finally went to see Nick again and he provided a simple stretch that worked. My neck and upper back are resolved. And, if I feel pain in that area, I know what to do to help ease it and how to do the stretch correctly. I have learned the back is mechanical and Physical Therapists are experts and helping one work through these. Like another reviewer said, if your PT is not working, or everything you have tried is not working, give Nick Rinard Physical Therapist a shot. After being involved in a car accident, Nick Rinard Physical Therapy was my first call without hesitation. Having worked with Nick and Katie prior to this incident, I knew there was nobody more qualified and that I trusted more than the two of them. Upon my first visit, Nick was able to clearly create a plan of care specific to my needs as he saw me not only a patient, but a student and a worker. I had gone to another physical therapist prior to Nick Rinard, but the pain in my right leg persisted. After 8 visits to Nick Rinard, I am pain free. Nick took the time to listen to me and explain what I needed to do to remain pain free. He showed me the exercises and stretches I needed to perform and went over them with me several times to make sure I was doing them correctly. His office staff is awesome too. Dr Rinard is a good Phys. Therapist. But, he and his staff are terrible with communication and paperwork. His office is a 45 min drive from my home. The last appt I went to, when I got there, the staff said my insurance coverage had run out 3 appointments ago, and if I wanted to see him that day I would have to pay $150.00 right than. I was so upset that no one let me know this that I left. I called later to let the Dr. know what happened and how upset I was, and he never bothered to call me back. I than got a bill from the office that did not make any sense to me, (I had paid all my other bills to them). Of course they charged me for the 3 visits that the insurance did not cover, when they said they'd keep an eye on that for me on my first visit. This bill also, did not match my insurance E.O.B.s or what I had paid in co-pays. So I called the office again, no answer, so I was only able to leave a message. Still no call back, two weeks later I got the same bill in the mail. So I sent them a detailed letter explaining to them that I did not understand the bill and that could they please call me so we could clear it up. Still no call. I did not hear from them for an entire year, so I thought the bill was an error and thats why they did not call me or send me any more bills. A year later though I got another bill. It was the same bill, I was so supersized! no explanation, no bother to even address my questions. So I called again in May of this year, again no answer, so I left a detailed message and asked them to please call me so we could work this out, and get it all cleared up. No one called or sent me a letter or another bill. Instead, I got a call last week from a collection agency saying Dr Rinard sent me to collections! I could understand this if I had been a flake and just not paid, but I reached out several times wanting to understand and clear this up. and they just did not respond. Not good ethics at all!!!! I would have paid this had they just called me and explained the charges to me!!!! I would not recommend them to anyone!! read more

I doubled checked with my insurance company and Nick Rinard's billing office to make sure they were in network. Like another reviewer, it turns out that the therapist who worked on me was NOT in network and so my first visit cost $380 and the 2nd visit cost $240 (Spring 2016). It also took 2 months to figure this out and only because I finally contacted Blue Cross myself. That's 2 months of no treatment while waiting for the office to update me. They gave me a "cash break" and I ended up paying $325 total for 2 visits where I spent most of the time repeating myself to the therapist. read more

Three members of my family, including myself, have been treated by Nick Rinard over the years with great success. My problem has been disk derangement in two locations that can compromise my range of motion and cause serious pain. Nick has taught me how to recognize and manage my symptoms. Through his care I have become much better informed about the way my body works and what I can do to maintain the correct alignment that will prevent further difficulties. As an older adult, my first goal is to maximize my health so that I can participate in challenging activities at the gym and outdoors. Although the staff are fine, and Nick Rinard is definitely good at his job, and they seem professional on the outside, I have to say my experience has been irretrievably tainted by the way this business has become set on squeezing every penny they can out of you and by any means necessary. I was referred to MDT many years ago and noticed a change in recent visits. I would receive 3 to 4 phone calls if I did not immediately book my next appointment in the office. In telling the various receptionists that I was busy and could not make certain dates they were PUSHY, repeatedly calling after I had made it clear that I could not commute after work to their office. It was like they wouldn't take no for an answer and I started to feel like a big fat $ sign instead of a patient at their office. I have to say my opinion has changed and I feel that the integrity of the business has suffered in the pursuit of gaining more clientele. Relationships are built on trust and especially when you are a longtime patient, you don't expect to be treated like this... in one word the overarching sentiment I now have for this business is greed. If you have any experience in the small business world as I have, you will know that people choose independent businesses that are run by local people and frequent their businesses based on relationships and trust, both of which have suffered in my long term experience. read more

She asked a few questions and had me do a few movements to reach her diagnosis that it was actually a disk issue in my neck. WATCH OUT FOR UNFAIR BILLING PRACTICES AT MDT The bottom line: AFTER WITHOLDING MY STATEMENTS FOR OVER TWO YEARS, MDT SENT ME TO COLLECTIONS WHEN I COULDN'T PAY I received therapy treatments from Nick Rinard of MDT in fall 2011 and December of 2012, but I didn't get a bill from his office until March of 2013. When I would ask about my bill as I paid the office fee for each of my therapy sessions, the office staff would act reassuring and tell me that the accounting office was billing my insurance, and if I owed anything more, they would be sure to let me know. In the meantime, the office staff people kept calling me and urging me to make more and still more appointments for ongoing therapy. Not until March 2013, two months after I had informed the staff I couldn't continue therapy because I was unemployed, did I receive my first ever billing statement from MDT - with charges dating all the way back to my first visit in 2011, for a grand total of nearly $2000. So here's a word to the wise: Nick Rinard may be great at the PR, but when he tells you he hates insurance companies, as he told me during my first therapy session, you had best take him at his word. If you need to use your insurance, take my advice and stay away from MDT! read more

As a fairly hardcore weekend warrior with numerous marathons, ultras, triathlons, and endurance events under my belt, being side-lined for a year with injury was not good news for myself or those close to me. What started as ITBS progressed to leg and foot tingling/numbness, and countless visits to PT, chiropractor, massage and other therapies was not bringing sustained relief. An MRI of the lumbar spine revealed all sorts of bulges and stenosis and the next step was steroid injections. Then someone referred me to Nick and team at MDT and my treatment was fast and effective. The very first visit Nick taped up my back and that afternoon I had my first pain free run in months. Then we set about rebuilding my back strength so I didn't need the tape. After just 10 short visits Nick discharged me and told me I had all the tools I needed to fix myself. The exercise routine has been exhausting but invigorating. I'm not symptom free, but every week brings significant improvement in both symptoms and performance. I'm now running and swimming regularly and quickly losing my ill-gained weight. And I'm building an overall core strength and back posture which has likely been lacking for several years due to the demands of a busy work life.
