Pies can be very nice or very average depending on what you get but the bread and doughnuts are to die for. When I was younger, I liked the small doughnut balls that use to be just 20 cents each. I think the price has gone up since then, but they use to be great sugary, cinnamon goodness and a good treat. Now that I have aged a bit, the $1.80 bread loaf is a more compelling option, especially if you love sandwiches as much as I do.

It used to be chunky chicken yumminess but now it's slightly off its game (no pun intended) and all mushed up together. I'm not sure if it is ownership change or just recipe change that has taken my pie heaven from me, I've decided to move on. The bakery has won A LOT of awards in the past. They have some small tables inside if you don't want to grab your food and run. It's a well set out, clean and attractive bakery.

Most bakeries stock a staple of the same items so that customers can go every day if they want to purchase their most favourite baked goods. It was like each day I visited I had to find out if that day would be my lucky day to have the privilege to purchase an apple custard tart. Since each day wasn't my lucky day and I left in disappointment I gave up and won't be returning again. Such a shame because their products are great but it's pot luck whether they feel like selling you your favourite baked goods that day or not. If the 5m long menu board isn't overwhelming enough for your taste buds make sure you DO NOT LOOK at the food cabinet on the way up to making your order as it will just confuse you more. The first time I went here I was distracted by so many things on the menu that I went for the safe eggs and coriander on rye option. A bit disappointed at the cost versus size of the meal my experience was slightly tainted. But as I sipped on my Ginger Zinger drink that was like star anise and gingery lemon jesus juice in a cup I looked closer at the menu and at what people were eating. It seemed that their big pancake and their roti wraps are the way to go. Upon my return to give this place a second shot I ordered a vegetarian twist on a bacon and egg wrap and, despite a bucket load of sauce and a fair amount of oil, I was impressed. As Laura said though, aside from the Ginger Zinger, the other highlight here is the bowls of coffee they serve. I visit sleepy Semaphore quite a lot, as the old parent-shaped people live that way, and it was only relatively recently that I stumbled across this haven of Scandinavian delights. Complementing the birch tree wall art and Viking paraphernalia (I'm a huge sucker for Viking paraphernalia) is a tasty menu of baked goodies that are fresh, sweet and plentiful - as well as Swedish-inspired specialties like elderflower drinks and traditional waffles. Any country that has a TRADITION of waffles is all right by me. They seem to be undergoing renovations at the moment, but the place is still very cute, with kitschy Swedish accessories, some chandelier action, as well as the aforementioned radical Viking stuff. There always seems to be a queue here which is also a good sign - and, super importantly, the coffee is solid. ALSO: THEY SERVE COFFEE IN A BOWL. A bowl, people.
