It's been said that Buffalo is one of the best designed cities in America, with a pinwheel of main throughways all intersecting at the central downtown hub: Niagara Square. But oh, how I loath how Buffalo has managed this square (which is also actually a circle). It could be a special one, but it's just not.
Try driving a car around the square and not hitting a red stop light. Go ahead, I'll wait..... You back? You hit at least one light, didn't you? Who puts traffic lights on a circle patterned route? Buffalo, that's who. Circles are supposed to make it easier for traffic to get about, but the Dept. of Public Works thinks otherwise, but don't get me started on them (read my review for Buffalo Dept. of Public Works, Parks & Street and then grab a pitchfork).
Oh, you want to walk through the square to enjoy some of its charm and pristine beauty? Too bad. The crosswalks are at the East and West end only, even though most people want to traverse North and South on Delaware, so would be jay walkers brave a nonstop barrage of cars to get to through the Square from these ends, even though there are plenty of traffic lights to stop traffic, and from the perspective of a driver of one of those cars they spend most of their time sitting at one of these lights in the square and not driving over jay walkers like they'd rather be doing.
Since we're speaking of jay walking, this reminds me of best thing going for the square, which is when the food trucks all come on Thursdays during the summertime for lunch. There you'll see a steady flow of suit-clad downtown workers weaving in and out of traffic attempting not to become someone's new hood ornament. Sadly, unsuccessfully for some.
Furthermore, where are all the pigeons and homeless people sleeping on benches? I know, you're thinking, "Gee, isn't that a good thing?". Sure it is, but try to imagine another square you've been to where that wasn't the case. I submit to you that the reasoning is that the square normally has absolutely nothing going on there and is inaccessible, to my point. For example, do you remember the Occupy Movement? Well, the caravan of gypsies, junkies and hobos that attempted to "Occupy Buffalo" were bested when they attempted to infiltrate the square like Hannibal's elephantry crossing a high mountain pass in the Alps, but couldn't figure how to get into it, failed miserably and froze to death instead.
And that brings me to my final point: the freezing cold and snow. read more
