It's pretty much your average Boots, it's fairly spacious and the stock is reasonable for a store of its size. The store was clean, and well laid out, again similar to what you'd expect from Boots. The fridge section of to-go food and drinks was smaller than other Boots stores, but still considerably better than at WHSmith, next store. They did appear to be slightly understaffed, with no staff members on the shop floor, but they were fairly quiet when I visited during the afternoon, so I guess they didn't feel it was required. They do close at 6 pm during the week, I do find this to be a little early, but this is in line with most of the other shops nearby. 3*

Mercury News commits FRAUD! BEWARE!!!!…read more Sometime last year a guy who claimed to be in college came to my house to sell me the Mercury News. He told me it would help with his college cost. I told him I was not interested. Then he asked me for my number and told he he can just show his boss that he is actually trying to sell papers and at least he will be getting some credit. Lapse of judgment, I gave him my number. To make a long story short, our apt building started to receive the paper once a week. Then I get a renewal invoice from Mercury News. I called the Mercury Newspaper and found out a email was created, start a new subscription, an email that I NEVER CREATED!!!! Furious, I told the rep that this is fraud and identity theft. furthermore, I wanted a email confirmation from them stating they closed the account and what actions do they plan to take on this individual. They stated they will get back to me in 2 days. We will see.

The newsagent sells a vast range of newspapers and magazines, pretty much anything you can think of! They also sell a decent range of cards, soft drinks, gifts, confectionery, local maps (town plans), etc. The staff are friendly and efficient, so although Mercury News is always busy, there's never much of a queue. The Post Office is a fairly sizeable branch situated at the back of the shop. They do all the jobs you expect a post office to do, posting parcels, car tax, premium bonds, passports etc, and the staff are much like in the newsagent, good natured, but efficient. The combination of the two businesses makes Mercury News a very useful shop!

This is still the case to a certain extent, however the corporatist face of pharmaceutics has changed this and most chemists are profit orientated, faceless and unfriendly. Twilight UK Pharmacy is the exception. The company has two stores, one in Sparkhill and one in Kings Heath. The Kings Heath branch is new and does a great trade. The reason for this is because the people that own and work for the pharmacy actually care about their customers. They are knowledgeable professionals that take their customer's health very seriously. I have never waited for more than five minutes to have a prescription filled and have always been given good advice and guidance on medications that I have to take. They always have what I need in stock and if they don't then they will always have it filled for the next day.

When I was flu'd up to my eyeballs the shelf dedicated solely to types of Lemsip was helpful, if a little confusing. You can also pop in for a cold drink, make up, shampoo and hair accessories but really it is only a destination when you want hard (prescription) drugs. The writing all over the outside isn't very visually aesthetic for such a lovely corner of Poplar Road but at least you know what you can get even from metres away.
