Constant contact with the school. I receive weekly emails from the director, updating me on lesson plans and any special events (think field trips and fundraisers). The teachers call parents monthly to address any concerns or questions we may have. Each month, photos of my child are uploaded to a private Snapfish account. They're cloth diaper friendly! Your child brings their own lunch each day, or you can opt to order lunch (menus and order forms are available from the school). Right now, my sons options for ordering lunch are Mac and Cheese from McAlisters Deli one on day, or Grilled Chicken from Applebee's on another day. Refrigerators and microwaves are available in the classroom, so my son generally takes leftovers for lunch. Also, the school is completely nut free! Okay...but what about academics?? Each week has a theme. Let's take the week they learned about dental health as an example. It included making tooth artwork, reading books about teeth, a visit from a dentist and learning the Spanish word for teeth (diente). In the short time my son has been in attendance, he's made so much progress. Their program truly is Kindergarten Prep. I can't wait until my younger son begins school here in the fall.

It has been such a FANTASTIC experience. The director knew every kid by name. The teachers were superb and absolute saints! They taught her so much this past year. My kid never wanted to miss school, not even for fun stuff. She knows her alphabet, numbers, some blends, colors, shapes, how to behave in a structured environment, and more. I felt she was safe and very well cared for. Absolute five stars and will recommend to anyone else who lives in the area.

I seems as if they keep the equipment on the floor just to make it seem full. The staff told me they are getting new equipment in a few weeks but what the heck am I supposed to do until then? The only real thing I see coming of use is maybe a class if I can (not the reason I joined), or the pool. And the pool is already booked out for classes and whatnot so the adult swim or family swim is only a half hour block...usually when I'm at work. I cancelled my membership on the spot and am mad at myself for wasting money on this sorry establishment.

The original downtown Summerville location of the YMCA has a pool and sauna, gymnastics facility…read morewhich the Ponds location does not have. I am partial to this location because it is the one I grew up with- I took gymnastics here. I'm pretty sure the gymnastics facility is exactly the same as it was 20+ years ago when I attended. The best part about this gym (now that I'm an adult) and location is the child watch- it is open 7 days a week. So, if you have kids, you can work out every day almost all day long (2 hour limit). M-F the child watch is open from 8-8, Saturdays from 8-1, and Sundays i think from 12:45-3:45. It seems like a lot of gyms in the area either don't offer childcare or if they do the hours are really limited. There are many different classes offered as well as fitness coaches/trainers if you want that. There are two cardio rooms, a small one with just a few machines and a larger one upstairs with maybe 10 treadmills, a handful of bikes and I think a couple of ellipticals. I typically come here a few days/week with my two littles, drop them off at the daycare, then go running through downtown Summerville (you are required to stay on the campus while you have your kids in the childcare unless you are going on a run in which case I think you just leave them with your cell phone # and then off you go) or I do strength training in the weight rooms. Like every gym this one gets busy from around 4-7 so you may have to fight a fellow 9-5er for a parking spot and then a machine. After 7 the teenagers usually come out for their daily bulking/mirror staring sesh. During the daytime you can almost always find a machine easily since the people that come are typically SAHMs and older people coming in for either pool time or the daytime fitness classes. During the weekdays this location is very popular with older people, they like to come hang out in the community room and chit chat and sometimes play ping pong. The social scene here for 55+ is pretty poppin. Happy sweating!

Predatory Billing Practices and Zero Accountability…read more I was charged a $30 late fee simply because my credit card expired, with no warning at all! Most companies give at least one reminder before applying a fee, but the Cane Bay YMCA offered zero grace and blamed it on their third-party billing company, which they refused to name or help me contact. To make it worse, I addressed this issue in person with their Vice President, who was standing at the front desk. Even he said there was nothing he could do. That tells you everything you need to know... This is not a community-focused organization. It's a predatory billing setup hiding behind policies and third-party vendors, with no transparency, no accountability, and no care for loyal members. Do better, YMCA. Especially when your mission is supposed to be rooted in community and support.

I would strongly encourage parents to think carefully before enrolling young children in the Cane…read moreBay YMCA youth sports programs. My 4-year-old joined the soccer program expecting a positive and supportive first experience with sports. Instead, within just two practices, he became completely discouraged and now refuses to participate at all. I personally observed the coach repeatedly dismiss my son when he asked for help, while clearly prioritizing his own child and a small group of kids. This was not an isolated incident -- it was a consistent pattern that had a direct impact on my child's confidence and willingness to try. I brought this to the YMCA's attention, and while they acknowledged the concern and stated it would be addressed internally, they ultimately refused to offer any refund or credit. Despite recognizing that this is not the experience they want for children, there was no flexibility in resolving a situation that left a 4-year-old unwilling to participate. I understand that coaches are volunteers, but this is still a paid program. Basic inclusion, encouragement, and equal attention should be the minimum standard -- especially for the youngest age group, where these experiences matter most. It's disappointing that policies appear to be upheld more strictly than the YMCA's stated commitment to creating a positive and inclusive environment for children. While I appreciate that the concern was acknowledged, it's unfortunate that there was no meaningful resolution for a child who was directly impacted. I hope improvements are made so other families do not have a similar experience.
