The other portion of the museum is used for shows/events. I went a few weeks ago to see Terri Lyne Carrington and Mickalene Thomas do a collaboration. It was AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!! I would definitely recommend visiting when there's an event taking place.

The staff is constantly amazing me with their hospitality, I've met four employees so far and they are all shining stars. The four legged ones have great opinions of the art. And the roomba is not a character to be overlooked, the floors are spotless! The gallery manager is well versed and easy to communicate with, often going above and beyond for the artists that he works with. 10/10 guy, you should ask him about the bean. This is THE place to go for contemporary art in the city.

I visited the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House with my parents this past weekend, and we had an amazing…read morevisit. The home was built by/for Edsel and Eleanor Ford (Edsel was the son of Henry Ford), completed in 1928. It's a historic house, but the property offers so much more than, too. The house was designed by famed Detroit architect Albert Kahn (earlier in the day, we had walked by a past a mural that read "We Kahn Do It" - that's how famous Albert Kahn is in Detroit). It is an example of the English Cotswold style of architecture, and Kahn and the Fords found and purchased pieces from historic English home (antique wood paneling, fireplaces, stained glass, etc.). The home is incredible. There are several ways to enjoy the property. You can purchase grounds admission only to walk and explore the grounds. You can also purchase a self-guided tour or guided tour of the home, both of which include grounds access. We did the guided tour, and I'm glad we did. We learned a lot about the Fords, the home, their art collection (the home has some originals and some copies - the originals of which have since been gifted to the DIA or other museums), and more. Our tour guide was lovely - informative and friendly. Our tour was for a late Friday afternoon, so we were a total of 5 (2 people in addition to my family group). After our guided tour, we wandered around the grounds a bit. There are incredible views of Lake St. Clair, sculptures, a swimming pool, a lagoon, the children's playhouse, a power house, and more. The property isn't huge, but there is a shuttle that will take you from the visitor center to the house, if you need a lift. The visitor center is beautiful and offers some exhibition space, a beautiful restaurant where saw lots of people enjoying a meal or some wine (The Continental), a grab and go option for people without time for a meal (Speedster), and a very nice giftshop. I had only been to Detroit once before, and I didn't get a chance to visit the Grosse Pointe area of the city last time. The house is in Grosse Pointe Shores, and I even loved the drive out to the house - you pass such beautiful homes (mansions?)! We had a wonderful visit at the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House. I highly recommend it if you're interested in neo-English architecture, historic homes, the Ford family... or if you just want to visit somewhere incredibly beautiful within 20 minutes of downtown Detroit!

Tours are $20 and you're welcome to walk the grounds after, plus stop by the Playhouse (tiny house that was for the Ford's 7-year-old granddaughter) and the garage, where five antique vehicles are housed. The tour lasts an hour, our tour guide was Dan and he was great. My husband works for Ford so I thought he'd find the tour interesting, too. There's another tour, called Nooks and Crannies, that dives deeper into the house and it's history, and I'd like to take that one next. The grounds themselves are beautiful and there is a lot to see, including the displays in the Visitors Center, Bird Island, and the places I mentioned above. The Visitors Center also has a gift shop. I've heard they do concerts here in the summer, and I saw on Instagram that they will have a butterfly house, too, so I'll have to come back another time for that. Overall, I really enjoyed Ford House and hope to come back for the other tour at some point too.

It's a little bit off the beaten path in the Eastern Market neighborhood, which, to me, adds to its artistic charm. I was happy to spend a little bit of time perusing the rest of the gallery and the staff was very kind and informative. There is a small parking lot just outside the entrance and street parking available on Russell as well. Heads up: if you use an Apple GPS to get there, it'll direct you to the back of the building, so you'll need to be one block over! Anyway, I loved my experience and I can't wait to see what other kind of exhibits rotate through here.

Admission is $10 to get in, and they have two wild looking hearses in the parking lot. The museum is small, but has lots of different stuff to look at. They have actual human bones and skulls, coffins, and lots of mortuary tools from different time periods. It was quite interesting to look at and the owner, who also greeted us when we walked in, told us all about his collection. I believe he said he was also a mortician? He was very knowledgeable and personable. I wouldn't call it a gift shop at the front of the store, but they do have several different types of things for sale like t-shirts, incense, and other interesting artifacts. Overall a very unique experience, and the owner is very insightful and full of knowledge.

I went through the collection about two or three times and kept noticing new things I hadn't seen before. Altogether I think we spent about an hour and enjoyed every minute of it. He's collected all the pieces and exhibits for Mythos and he opens his collection to the public on the weekends. I brought a date here as a stop for something a little out-of-the-ordinary. I will say I expected it to be a little larger but all the exhibits were interesting. There are small placards with descriptions and informative blurbs for a lot of the pieces so if you have the time and the interest you could spend an hour here reading through the museum. If you're just browsing through the works it'll be a quick 30 minute tour. It was $20 a head for adults. I think the favorite exhibit for me was all the museum quality animal skull recreations and fossils with an emphasis on pre-historic animals.

I visited Cranbrook with my parents last week, and I really enjoyed my visit…read more Cranbrook has a fascinating history. It's a whole campus: art museum, sculpture garden, grounds, historic homes... The campus began when Detroit newspaper mogul George Booth and his wife Ellen Scripps Booth founded the complex, which eventually included schools, an academy of art, their house and gardens, a church, and more. Cranbrook is a hot spot for architecture nerds. Why? Much of the campus was designed by famed architect Eliel Saarinen. On campus, you can find the Saarinen House (the house Eliel Saarinen and his family designed on the Cranbrook campus as their home and studio) and the Cranbrook House (the Albert Kahn house built for George and Ellen Scripps Booth). Just off the campus (a five-minute drive away) is the Smith House (a Frank Lloyd Wright-house designed for school teachers Sara Stein Smith and Melvyn Maxwell Smith. All three homes are open seasonally for tours, either individually or together (Cranbrook offers a Three Houses Tour). We did the Three Houses Tour. While it's a lot (3.5 hours), it was incredible to see these three very different homes while visiting Cranbrook. A Frank Lloyd Wright is always a treat (but the Smith House is extra special given the story about the couple who built it), but the Saarinen House was also special, because of the relationship between Saarinen and the Cranbrook campus. The grounds are incredible. There are extensive walking paths on the grounds, and I wish we'd had time to see more of it. For example, we didn't have time to find the Japanese Garden! I did love the Carl Milles sculptures around the grounds. There's a lot to do at Cranbrook: the art museum, the grounds, the houses. The grounds on their own are worth a visit, and it seemed like some people who live in the area explore or walk their dogs in the area, which is very peaceful. We spent pretty much a whole day at Cranbrook between a visit to the art museum and the Three Houses Tour! I wish we'd gotten there earlier to allow more time to explore the grounds and gardens. It's a must visit for anyone who loves art or architecture!

Cranbrook, my love! A staple in Oakland County all my life! As a child, I came here for summer…read morecamps at the Science Institute, climbed that stegosaurus, and played about in the fountains. As a teenager, Cranbrook was my rival, as I went to Country Day for high school! As an adult, Cranbrook is one of my favorite places to walk with my dog all year round. We love coming here to appreciate the House & Gardens, walk around the lake, soak in the architecture & art, and share it all with our family and friends! Every time we come here, we see photoshoots happening (and maybe I have done a few for my dog too in the past) - whether it be senior photos, weddings, family photos, or what - Cranbrook is the perfect backdrop! It's dog-friendly, if you haven't gathered that yet, and the campus is so big that there is so much to do here. Nowadays, we love parking at the art museum and walking over to the House & Gardens and around the lake to the Japanese Garden and just doing that path regularly! It's a fantastic time every time we come here and I hope we can continue doing it for years on end. Thanks for being you, Cranbrook!
