Beatties Department Store

Beatties Department Store

This is one of the smaller branches of a quality chain of department stores…read more Beatties has recently been taken over by House of Frasier, but I don't know if this store has yet been re-branded. Layout, selection, displays etc are the high standard you'd expect of a quality department store; unfortunately selection is very limited due to it's size Has the best stocked habidashery department in the whole of Northampton

Beatties is a really nice department store that sells good quality items and has a really good…read morerange of products. They sell similar ranges to BHS and Marks and Spencers such as clothing and accessories, homewares and soft furnishings, gifts and seasonal items, but they also have fantastic cosmetics and perfume counters where you can get advice on skin care and make up and I believe that they do some demonstrations too. They often sell gift sets that are unavailable in other stores. The clothing ranges are split into departments for differnent ranges and designers and they offer clothing designers suitable for all age ranges. The store is a large one which has two floors accessible by an escalator. There is free parking in the Grosvenor centre where it is situated and the store can be accessed through two separate entrances. The store is nicely laid out and although some of the items may be a bit more expensive than smaller stores, they often sell things that you cannot get in other stores and it is a great place to pick up a variety of goods, so fantastic for Christmas shopping.

It looks quite small from the outside, but it is quite a large store which goes back a long way and is split over 3 floors. It is a great department store which sells a great range of clothes, underwear, homewares, cosmetics and make up, perfumes and many more items that you would normally find in a department store. The staff are always extremely helpful in here and it's a nice place to have a wander round and a great place for doing Christmas shopping as you can get sometimes get all of your presents in one go as well as something really nice to wear. They do a fantastic range of partywear, ballroom and cocktail dresses and mens suits. They can be quite expensive, but they do some gorgeous pieces, which of course are always half price in the January sales so worth a look if you need a special dress or suit later on in the year. The only downfall to this store, is the fact that it is always really warm in there and I end up not staying in there sometimes just because it gets too uncomfortable to shop. The nearest place to park is the Grosvenor shopping centre which is within walking distance.

I always walk round here and never usually come out with anything I want because I havent found it…read more:o( Its quite small considering some of the Debenhams I have lived with and would rather pay the train fare to Coventrys one than go here

TK Maxx

I don't care for TK Maxx one bit. Approaching the store it has dedicated car parking out front,…read moreunfortunately the experience gets progressively worse from here on in. The space inside is huge but the layout completely ridiculous and wasteful. The first thing you'll see is rails, rails and more rails of clothes. I'm sure if you visit early on Monday morning the clothes are in some kind of significant order, however by a Saturday afternoon there is no obvious solution to finding clothes in correct sizes or even the same style. The rest of the store is just like some Blue Peter bring & buy sale, really tacky awful items that, if original and highly priced, you'd see in an eccentrics mansion but from TK Maxx looks like the result of cleaning out a shut-in's house from the wrong side of the tracks. The staff all seem to have realised how awful this place is long before you arrive and therefore have no reason to help you in finding anything, or giving you correct prices for the hundreds of items without price tags, or doing anything at a speed quicker than an arthritic turtle. I know people who rave about this place but these are the same people who use the shop for fancy dress outfits so take that for what it's worth, whatever you do try and steer clear of TK Maxx.

I like TK Maxx, and usually pop in hoping to find what I need in there. It has a good little…read morechildrens clothes section including many designer brands that are cheap there are also toys, books and dvds. Then a great little Home section which is good for gifts or your own personal use photo albums/frames, books, condiments, teas/coffees, chocolates, toiletries, pots/pans, utensils, flasks, bathroom bits and bobs, bedroom bits and bobs, ornaments, mirrors, luggage....etc! Downstairs are designer discount trainers/shoes/boots for men, women and children and womenswear and menswear. BUT!!!....Although I do like it, there are a few golden rules..always try things on as sizes vary alot! Always check your item of clothing over for damage of any kind...and definately allow a while for searching, you really do lose time in here!!

Even though this is a really small shopping centre it used to contain quite a few good shops and…read morewas worth a visit, but on my last trip to Northampton a few weeks ago I went in there and half of the shops are now empty. The best shop in there is probably Next but this is a really small branch and do not offer the same selection as most of the other branches. There is a small Dorothy Perkins and a couple of other clothes shops and a Clinton Cards which is a good store, but other than that the choice is very limited and I would stick to the Grosvenor Centre where you get a much better selection. There is a lovely cafe in here though which is open plan and serves really nice food and drinks at good prices, so it is worth popping in for something to eat as the main Grosvenor Centre doesn't really have any small cafes like this. This was once a nice small centre but it has gone downhill with the closure of shops. It lacks atmosphere and just looks drab and dreary and is not really worth bothering with much these days.

People moaning about the Grosvenor centre obviously haven't been to Peacock Place. This really is…read moreeverything that is poor about shopping centres. There is no 'thru traffic' (no car park, no bus station..) and hence there is insufficient trade to support any decent shops, for any reasonable length of time. As such, it is a white elephant. Tiny, with no reason to enter it, the best thing about Peacock Place is it's name. Oh, and the fountains are quite nice. In essence it's a small, dark shopping arcade into which there is no reason to enter. As such, it has always suffered and presumably will continue to do so. The entrance is on the old market square, which is very pleasant.

There are two shopping centres in Northampton, and this is the larger of them. It's on 2 floors for…read morethe shopping, and then you can (sort of) get to the carparking using the lifts from within the shopping centre as well. I say sort of because the car parking there is a nightmare it's kind of split between two different sections and is really confusing if you don't know what you're doing. The shops are well to be honest a bit ordinary, all the places you'd expect to find and very little else boots, smiths, various clothes shops etc. The sort of places you find on most highstreets anywhere. There's nothing to make the place stand out. The market outside the doors is more interesting and now they're talking of removing most of that so poor old Northampton will loose half their market for some giant viewing screen or some nonsense.

The Grosvenor Centre is situated right in the heart of Northampton and is directly connected to the…read morebus station. As a shopping centre, it isn't a bad place to go with a lot of the big named shops being situated there. The main problem with the centre is the lack of originality with the range of shops on offer, but this is starting to become the case with most shopping centres now and it's rare to find an original gem of a shop on a high street or shopping centre. When you leave the centre this also takes you either right on to the market square or on to the main shopping high street. Unfortunately, it could do with a bit of an upgrade as far as the decor is concerned as it does look somewhat out-dated, which does let it down quite badly.
