Alberto took us out on a 6 hour charter. He had everything set up when we arrived with shade and comfortable chairs. While waiting to catch he showed us how everything worked, talked to us about the local sharks and showed us an awesome set of shark teeth. He was very knowledgeable, professional, fun and helped just enough when we got one of the line! This is a once in a lifetime experience that my family and I will always remember! I highly recommend booking!

Sorry--cannot recommend it…read more My 10-year-old daughter and I went to Fernadina Beach for a few days of vacation. Deep sea fishing wise, we were flexible on days to go, times to go, and who to go with (just as long as the boat had a bathroom). Fishing-wise: 5 star day (caught over 2 dozen whiteys(?), 2 sea bass, a puffer fish, a sting ray, and few crabs). First mate Sam is an awesome guy--he was baiting the rods, and jumping around like a jack rabbit, especially later when the rain hit at the end of the charter. But the reason for the 1-star review isn't for the fishing, it's for Captain Steve himself [and if I could give him ZERO starts I would]. He feels the need to "school" his customers. I have gone fishing with charters before and we have ALWAYS given the crew shares of our catchings as part of our tip. They have always thanked us in gratitude. I received this e-mail from Captain Steve, an otherwise downer to a fantastic vacation: "In the future should you decide to book a trip anywhere in Florida, I would suggest you make reservations early so you have more choice on day of the week and time frame. Also for future reference (and I tell you this strictly fyi and not with any disrespect), the catch of the day is not considered a good tip. All charter fisherman get all the fish they need or want as most of them enjoy fishing and will fish on their days off if they need fish. It is kind of like giving your uneaten salad to your waitress in place of a tip. We do however appreciate the donations and generally give them to local old folks that can no longer fish for themselves or to non-profits for fund raisers." Ye Olde Pirate Fishing Charters is not the cheapest on the island, nor the most expensive. It cost me $475 for a 4-hour charter [and I hope Sam gets $400 of that since he is such a hard worker]. We tipped Sam $40 plus the crew took home over a dozen fish [we took a few to have for dinner at a local diner]. A tip should be seen as extra, not asked for numerous times. It appears that he is only out for the money. Should we ever find ourselves in this part of the country again, not likely, we will go with someone else. I suggest you do the same.

The fourth of July 1976 was truly one of the best…read moredays spent on lake in MN with my grandfather on a pontoon boat when I caught the trophy trout and would not let the family cook it for dinner. In the years since, I have been fishing the west coast and Mexico. In that time, I have been lucky to have been with some amazing guides like Ronnie Kovach and Mike Gardner, or on boats like the Excel and the Freedom back when Tommy was the captain. George Smith of HerMoney is truly one of the best guides in the business. This year was our second trip in in three years with him. First, his boat is absolutely top notch and rock solid stable. His rental gear is actually quality equipment. A lot of guides that I have used in FL tend to hit WalMart and use their $20-30 specials. George is using good Okuma reels with good rods. They are loaded with spectra and have good top shots. As for the fishing, both of the trips he has guided, we have caught fish (reds, trout, drum, rays). This last trip was much better than the first. It was just a few weeks ago so it is still early in the season. What is truly special about HerMoney is the customer service. My mom is 75 years old and left handed. He took the time to set up her reel correctly for her. Then, for the rest of the day, he put bait on every hook, threw every cast, and did everything he could to make sure she caught fish. On the West Coast when you fish out of Newport, you are basically on your own. You go to San Diego, the deck hands spoil you. That is what it is like fishing with George. It is so fun to go fishing and not be the one who has to rig the rods, bait the jigs, pull the hooks. So, expect to tip at the end of the trip because he will earn it! One last thing, and this is just a thank you to George. I personally cannot cast a spinning a reel to save my soul. I started with conventional reels and never really learned the technique. This trip, he loaned me one of his rods to use with my reel. He rigged it up with a float setup and just went that extra mile. I truly can't say enough about his service.
