Yes, I once again had forgotten to bring a pencil with me, but surprisingly, the overpriced mechanical pencil that just says OAKLAND, CA was only $1.99. Not bad at an airport. But I made a tactical mistake. I normally just buy a Chronicle, read a couple of articles, and spend the next hour-and-a-half doing the crossword puzzle. This time, since I had a while till my flight left, I figured I would plan for the future by buying one of those cheap books with a bunch of crossword puzzles in them. This was also reasonably priced ($4.99, I think), but I was disappointed because the puzzles were so easy! So instead of using my brain, I ended up zoning out as I speed-completed seven puzzles in about an hour. The coolest thing about this place was the cashier. When I gave her the pencil, she couldn't read the price code on it. So she grabbed one of the pairs of reading glasses from the display next to the cash register, put them on to read the code, entered it, and put the glasses back. I teased her for this, and she took it in stride. Overall, it's reasonably priced for what it is, and that woman sure is friendly.

The News Exchange is so secret that not even Oakland International Airport's website lists it as…read moreone of its amenities, but believe me, it's there: right before Terminal 2's Gate 26, along the right-hand wall opposite the moving walkway as you approach from security. The shop I usually waste money at was under construction, so I gave the News Exchange a try. Thankfully, they've somehow shed their Coca-Cola-products-only policy, and $3.28 later (including tax), I had myself 20 ounces of Nutrasweetened carcinogen water--I mean diet soda. It's really nothing more than wall shelves and coolers with impulse items on/in them, so it feels weird "shopping" here. And the employees always look bored, but I would be bored too if I had to sit on a chair in the open and watch thousands of people walk by, some of whom are taking photos of my place of work to include in Yelp FtRs.

I never understood why people write reviews for places that are closed but I just have to do this:…read more This is my grandfather's newspaper. He started it in 1960 and ran it until the day he passed away in January 1975. My uncle then ran it on and off into the 80s. This newspaper was a way to unite the Portuguese community who had left their country to come to the Bay Area. Some of the articles may have been less newsworthy than others like the full page spread on my parent's wedding, but my grandfather loved people and loved life and loved his family and this paper was his passion and his way to bring that all together. I typed the word "Portuguese" into a Yelp search and this is the only listing that came up. I thought that was pretty amazing and I felt it was a sign that I should write about this paper and what it meant to my family and my grandfather, a wonderful man (I am told) who I never had the pleasure of meeting.

First off, Renee absolutely is THE person to own and run this place. She feels like a warm lovable character from your favorite book, the kind you reach for every now and then to read over and over again. I called recently because I really wanted to get my hands on a copy of Nikita Gill's new book "Hekate" and yes, I know I could just order it online from big box stores but I knew I wanted to support my local bookstore. Renee was quick and prompt and while she didn't have it in stock, she ordered it as quick as she could and I was able to go pick it up in the next day or so! And I picked up a few other books while I was at it because who could say no to more books!? I love popping in whenever I'm strolling downtown and I hope Books on B never leaves!
