I've been a fan and avid reader of the Springfield News-Leader ever since the paper was delivered to my High School going back to 1986. If you wanted to know what's going on in the Ozarks for many years it was the source to turn to especially if you wanted your media in print format. Print offers some advantages that other forms of electronic media can't do. That being said the quality of the paper, it's depth and breadth of their coverage has diminished in recent years. Electronic media is taking it's toll and the paper seems to be in a slight downward spiral in my opinion. The paper has announced their intent to put up a paywall for content starting May 1st, 2012. I sent the editors a complaint as the rates they want to charge for Ozarks content in a smaller media market are higher than what I would pay to subscribe to the KC Star or even the Los Angeles Times. If they come back to reality on pricing I might give their paywall a look. But until that time after over 2 decades of readership I have removed the News Leader from my news sources for keeping track of the Ozarks. There is better content available elsewhere at fair prices. 2 stars. read more

I subscribed with intention of getting the News-Leader for just a couple months for the election as I like to collect historical newspapers. I called to cancel both print and digital media and they said they cancelled everything and I was paid up though the 27th and that was fine. Next week I got a $19.99 charge on my credit card from Gannett. I called to complain and wanted a refund but they said this was not possible because the billing already started on the 27th of the previous month. Total BS and a scam! I will never subscribe to anything published by Gannett again. read more

I signed up for a free trial and forgot to cancel the subscription. I was then charged 20 dollars monthly for 2-3 months before I noticed and tried to cancel the subscription. The only way to cancel was to call them during business hours. After being questioned about why I'm canceling and how I'll get my news in the future (not your business), i was offered a price drop to 9.99. When I still refused. They dropped the offer to 4.99. Pretty sketchy business model if you can mark down your price by 75% and still turn a profit. It should never be that hard to cancel a subscription, especially when I purchased the subscription with 2-3 clicks on my phone. Not a good look. read more

I pay for the paper to be delivered Sunday -Friday for my 80 year old father who reads the paper every morning. For a while, the paper was showing up every day like clockwork. A couple of months ago the paper just would not show up every once in a while. Now it is almost daily. My 80 year old father is not going to read it on the computer. I have called and complained, but it does no good. It is very frustrating not being able to speak to someone local, it is always over seas. Ugh!!! If you can't provide the service you offer, don't offer the service. read more

Never consistent in our area. The paper is either not thrown or you might get 2 or 3 days together some days you might go a week without one. Never know and the price is too high for inconsistent carrier. Already missed 8 days for month of January. Totally ridiculous and not worth it. read more

I signed up for the Thur and Sunday paper only, it's been month's and have yet to receive a paper. One day, I noticed a few papers on my neighbors lawn, there was a thursday paper, and a sunday paper, I asked if they get the paper. They said, no they thought it was a freebie. Looks like my delivery driver has been delivering the paper to wrong address, and continues to deliver to my next door and the house two over from mine. I have called customer service twice only to have them tell me to keep trying. NOPE, canceled will never order their paper again. Sorry News Leader, you may be news leader but you're not the delivery leader. Maybe grubhub should be delivering papers. read more

1 star because I can't pick 0 stars. My check cleared the bank March 25th and now it's the 8th of April and I have never received a paper. I call twice and the circulation department promises to solve the problem but it doesn't get resolved. The 3rd time I called I got cut off while waiting for a supervisor. Keep your money in your pocket and don't waste your time on this company. read more

I signed up for the Springfield News-Leader in Mo. on behalf of my elderly parents for the Thurs-Sunday delivery for $1.99 per week for 3 months back on Sept. 10th 2020 which was almost impossible to do due to their lack of manpower due to COVID19, it took almost an hour to get signed up and then I was required to give them my Discover card to maintain the subscription. It got very busy and hectic for several months and my parents did not receive several of their subscriptions as required and when I was able to view my Discover card activity I found that it was a bait and switch in which I was charged what they claim was the normal subscription rate of $12.97 a month with an added charge of $5.00 a month for a premium edition which I never agreed to or signed up for. I tried calling the Gannett Co. which owns the News-leader and their computer hung up on my 4-5 times after saying it did not understand me 3 times in a row of repeating the same phrase. I finally got a hold of a human being who identified as Sonny and he told me it has been company policy to sign subscribers up for the premium edition since 2016 but was unable to tell me the difference between the regular edition and the premium edition. I asked to speak to his supervisor and asked him the supervisors name which he said was Glen, however when the supervisor came on the phone he said his name was Anthony and when I told him I was told by Sonny it was Glen he said that was his second name. I confronted Anthony on all the different charges and he finally agreed to refund me all the charges for the premium edition. I told him to cancel my subscription. I have since instructed Discover Card to not allow them to place any more charges on my card. read more

I have the Thur and Sunday paper delivered for $12.99 per month, I have only received 2 Thur papers in 2 months and they keep increasing the amount they charge my credit card each month when I complain, it's up to $50 this month!. I'm off to my credit card company to deny the charges! I have been Emailing with Teri @ gannett but no replies about a refund just the $50 charge on my card this month! read more

The News-Leader charged our family $493 for a small obituary for our deceased Mother. This was charged to our account by the funeral home who acted in good faith but didn't realize the charge. Is it any wonder newspapers are going out of business. read more

Customer service is almost nonexistent. If you want a paper go buy one as their home delivery is very poor!

I was lied to by field-rep about get the paper for $0.99 and I'm being charged full price. I was able to talk to a human after about 6 minutes of being on hold. He was very understanding and refunded me my 4.63 and canceled my subscription. You can get a bad egg in the customer service department but don't let that ruin everything for you. read more

The home delivery service is very, very low rated. I live on the corner of two streets where it is a bus stop for Springfield elementary school students. I've requested over and over to have the paper by the front door or driveway. The paper boy, JOSEPH, throws the paper 30ft. from my front door in the area were the students wait for the school bus and the kids steal the paper. The kids have stolen at least 1/3 of subscription. I've called News-Leader, they forward the call and the phone is never answered. read more

I was a very happy subscriber of the News-Leader for about 9 years when David Templeton was our delivery man. He NEVER missed us and always threw the paper against my garage door, into that 1-foot space that was dry on rainy days and out of the snow in the winter. He retired and now, I have the worse delivery man (or woman) ever. I see him speed at about 50 miles an hour down our narrow, quiet neighborhood street with a 25 MPH speed limit. There are kids all over the place. The last time I saw him do this, he had his arm extended out the window, holding the plastic bag that held my paper in it in his fist. He didn't even acknowledge I was at the far end of my driveway, almost in the street, on my hands and knees in my robe, looking under my car for the paper. Looking straight, he simply opened his hand as he raced by and let the paper fall to the middle of the street. It slid about 30 feet past me, hit the curb and jumped into the air about 6 feet, and landed in the neighbor's yard. He misses me regularly. I have complained and never have had any results. I got no paper two days ago, yesterday or today. I give up!!! read more

Overpriced, poor customer service, field sales reps are not trustworthy. Overall one of the worst business I have dealt with in many years. Go with a regional or national paper if you really want a printed paper. Otherwise I would stick with internet news sites and get customized news, coupons, comics and other interests set up for your inbox from the various sites that can be searched for easily. Most of those sites will also carry your local news as well, and most of them are FREE. read more

I cancelled the Newsleader about 2 months ago due to increasing prices. Last week, on Fri. I got a call offering a deal for $10 a month for 6 months plus a $15.00 gift card for Thurs - Sun delivery. So I signed up. No paper Sat, Sun or the following Thurs. Called (waited 35 min to speak to someone). They said my account was listed as inactive, but they would fix that. I told her the amount offered and she said it would start the next day as I had described. Great! NOT. It did start on Friday and I got a paper Frid, Sat, Sun and then Mon, Tues, and Wed. On Thursday, I got a bill in the mail for $89.45. WHAT!!!!!! Called back. Waited another 35 min. to speak to a person. She said there was no such offer - I gave her the name and phone # of the person I spoke to. So, I told her to cancel my subscription as of the next day. My balance on my bill is $10.56 for 8 days of paper. No gift card. Of course, she spent copious amounts of time offering me new deals and apologizing. Not worth the hassle. What a scam. read more
