The school's system is run poorly, but I will say a lot of the teachers were amazing to me during my journey. I came to that school in a very rough period of my life and met some of the best and worst people I think I'll ever know. Tuition is extremely expensive, but from what I heard there is financial aid. As for academics, I learned quite a bit from my 1:1 classes and I learned some basic social skills from my group classes. In the end, I left because I tend to be very social and this just isn't a social school at all. The small student population and limited groups did not work for me. There was some bullying and less than nice groups I got involved with, but a lot of that was my fault. The only real way I can describe my time at Yellowwood was being a child with many siblings in a divorced family. There was a lot of tension at some points but you did learn who to trust and who to avoid. It was an odd place for sure but I am grateful to Yellowwood for the initial support and the academics.

In addition to the limited amount of instruction time, the biggest barrier to progress was the constant instructor turnover. Both of my children had a new instructor nearly every other week, which meant they were effectively starting from scratch each time. The instructors also frequently encouraged us to find additional pool time and practice outside of lessons. That may be helpful advice for families with easy access to a pool, but it is much less practical when you do not have another pool readily available. Access to consistent instruction and guided practice was the reason we enrolled in swim lessons in the first place. Overall, the program felt like an assembly-line style of instruction and produced mediocre results for our children. You may save money in the long run by choosing private lessons from the start, particularly if your child needs consistency or more individualized support.

She has been to almost every classroom and has been taught by all the teachers and staff. You know the staff really cares about my daughter as they all know her by name. Although there was initially more turnover when she started, it seems to have become more steady and there is a longer-lasting relationship with the teachers. We didn't necessarily seek out the bilingual aspect of ECA when looking for a daycare, but I am thankful of the opportunity for my daughter to learn the Chinese language and culture even though we don't speak Mandarin at home. She surprises me with the amount she knows. Looking back, they were a bit more strict during the COVID years, but this is much appreciated as a parent. Although my daughter eventually did contract COVID, it was only at the peak of Omicron that it occurred. They had safety measures that straddled the line of being cautious but also fair to working families. The management has been communicative and transparent. When we have questions or concerns, they are always taken seriously and are open to feedback. We have been very happy with our experience here and don't hesitate to recommend other families to consider ECA.

My son at ECA has learned how to take care of himself, clean up after himself, manners, and properly greeting etiquette. We do not speak mandarin at home, so seeing him be able to pick up so much from school has been so heart warming and amazing. We feel that ECA has done much more, along the lines of controlled learning. Not does he only have free play, but they really do believe that learning about the outside world is just as important. He's learned about continents, the 5 oceans, the solar system. And not only does he learn them in English, he's learned them in Mandarin as well. He has been given the ability to practice his cutting, pasting, writing letters, and number... but he's also been given the experience to learn how to make dumplings, and moon cake with his peers. The art that they do is also tied in to the subjects they are learning... which is how it should be done. They get to see, hear, and do.. which is essential in active learning. We don't speak mandarin at home. And being able to watch my child read mandarin words, sing mandarin songs, and reply to his teachers in mandarin... has been amazing. I can truly say that he speaks better mandarin than I can now. I've added a video to my review as a small sample of how much my son has learned reading Chinese at ECA. Also, once they are in pre-k, there are some days, where your kid gets to bring home, homework (not mandatory). Haha if that's your thing. My child loved it. And was proud to do the work "all by himself". I truly believe my little one has been able to grow a lot from ECA. And we're really happy about the staff, and the head school, Jenny. They have less turn over rates than our prior daycare, and the staff really seem to enjoy their time with the kids. The cameras are also always a nice touch to ease any parent's anxiety. There are so many wonderful things to say about LPW-B but first and foremost will always be the dedication of the teachers and staff to the kiddos. Many teachers have been there for over 10 years and that certainly speaks to their love for the job and how they are treated by the administration (just ask anyone in childcare, esp. from a larger chain). They're also very accommodating to your child's needs -- my son has many food allergies and also requires the use of a feeding tube. The teachers & admin had zero qualms about providing him with his tubes feeds (twice daily at specific times). This was a huge relief as first time parents who really struggled getting the appropriate nutrition to their kiddo and then had to worry about food allergies and whether or not medical accommodations could be made. Finally, the monthly tuition is incredibly affordable. For both of my children, the monthly tuition is equivalent to my friend's one child at one of the nearby larger chains. The only "negative" I will mention is that if you really like the idea of having real-time updates via an app, LPW-B is more like your traditional elementary school where you'll get an update at the end of the day.

FHS first opened its doors in 1912 in Seattle's Mt. Baker neighborhood and it was designed in the Neoclassical/Greek Revival style by Seattle School District architect, Edgar Blair. The school was once deemed the most beautiful high school west of the Mississippi and featured at the Chicago World's Fair in 1933. The other basics: Mascot: Quakers Annual: Tolo* Colors: Green and Black Newspaper: Tolo * = Tolo is a Native American (Kalapuya) word that means: "to win, excel, gain, prevail, earn, control, convince, overcome, subdue, triumph, and succeed." Call me a freak, but I did enjoy my years in high school. I know that at times it was awkward, but I generally loved being an actively engaged student at Franklin. May it be the various clubs, athletics and the like; I definitely made the most of it. Oh, I did a lot of studying too! The school curriculum hasn't changed from I have seen. They still offer many honors, advance placement and humanities classes. I could go on about athletics at Franklin, but that would be a review in itself. Suffice to say, FHS has excelled in sports with numerous city and state championships. One thing I didn't know is that Franklin has the most players from western Washington to play in the NFL (8). FHS also feature a powerhouse Mock Trial team. One thing that I do remember about school was the diversity. FHS has always been one of the most racially and ethnically diverse schools in Washington. Former student, and Nobel Prize winner, George Hitchings ('23) said it best in his biography: "My experiences at Franklin High School in Seattle were notable for another reason. We had a most heterogeneous population, one that blended upper class and minorities including blacks, Filipinos, Japanese, Chinese and first generation Catanians. As a result I lost any self-consciousness I felt in dealing with people from different cultures and backgrounds." I didn't know what a Catanian was and had to look it up. Catania is a city in Sicily. That makes sense because Rainier Valley, where the school is located, was known as "Garlic Gulch." This concludes the formal part of this review. The rest is just extra credit. I won't say more about the academics, you can look up how great they are online. But I will say they don't break kids like other aggressive academic private schools, they make them love learning. My son is so motivated in kindergarten to do his schoolwork! The nutrition is top notch. They feed them "home cooked" healthy organic meals 4-6 times a day. Allergies accounted for. No cakes or sweets allowed and each child gets a classroom bday celebration. Arts are built into the curriculum: culinary arts, painting, music and dance with performances, gymnastics and you even get a speech therapist. Kids are with two teachers: English speaking and Russian speaking. This was a major deal for me in terms of importance. My kid was doing advanced math that kids in first grade are doing in prek and not on a tablet! By 5 he was reading and writing in two languages! The school is high in security and cleanliness. I know my kids are safe and I get photo updates of their time here. The school doesn't teach religion, politics, or gender stuff. That stays with the parents. I love this. It's one of the main reasons I'm here. But they are still teaching kindness, diversity and are strict on anti bullying. The school has hundreds of options for after school programs and care inclusive of science, robotics, musical instruments etc. But most importantly... I love the people. Everyone knows my kids from the daycare to the administration to the cooks to the director of the school. It feels like a warm and safe home. My kids feel comfortable and safe. They are welcomed with kindness. And I feel like they really care. The director of the school called me on the phone to tell me about my son's Iowa test and how she was concerned that someone as smart as him wasn't trying harder to take it. That level of care is so impressive to me. Hands down one of the best decisions I've made for my kids coming here. It is expensive! But very comparable to other private schools in the area. Only thing I can say is I wish the administration for the private school was as organized and on top of it as the administration for their prek and daycare.
