Horrible intake experience with incompetent staff. They insisted that my son needed to be in their…read moreadolescent substance abuse program, refusing to admit him via the mental health track. My son does not have a substance abuse problem, but he was in dire need of intensive outpatient mental health assistance. It took a lot to convince him to try the program, and the intake person on the phone (Jason) told him everything would be confidential. When we entered the facility, the woman who met with us (Teale) came out to the lobby and informed us my 16-year-old son would be required to enter the substance abuse track. She then proceeded to read everything from my son's file aloud--yes, in the LOBBY--explaining that because he had revealed to the phone intake person that he had consumed alcohol in the past, he would be required to enroll in the substance abuse program. Teale initially tried to tell me that our health insurance required him to be enrolled in the substance abuse program. When I pressed for details, she admitted it was an in-house decision. I called my insurance company, and they confirmed that Sandstone receives more money for the adolescent substance abuse program because it is considered a dual diagnosis program. We were there for an hour and everything took place in the lobby. I never set foot in their offices, and all of this information that my son was told was confidential was completely blabbed by Teale for anyone within earshot to hear. They actually refused to admit my son to the adolescent mental health intensive outpatient program unless we also consented to admit him to the substance abuse program. They turned away a suicidal teenager because they wanted to save that spot for a more profitable patient. Never mind that the little trust my son had in this program was completely obliterated by these people. The director of the program never came to speak with us or followed up with a phone call. This was an absolutely horrendous experience with a completely incompetent, greedy and very shady company.

There is to this day a stigma surrounding mental health issues. But we as a society need to talk about them - as there is a lot that can be done to help folks out when they need help. Before last year - I never understood why anyone would need to go talk to someone such as a psychiatrist, psychologist, or counselor. But I learned the hard way last summer. My hope is that in writing this review - it will help out others - to let them that know that they need to pursue assistance, get help, talk about these issues and get the issues into the light of day - and get back on the right track! When my Mother passed away last summer - I was pretty stressed out over her passing. I did not do a very good job of dealing with the stress, grief, and anxiety of losing her. My primary care physician wanted me to go talk with a counselor to help me get through this difficult period of time. This was corroborated by the two psychiatrists I went to visit for first and second opinions. They both felt I was experiencing some generalized anxiety over the loss of my Mom. So I started to visit with Eve Radin, an LPC. initially I wasn't sure what to expect, but Eve has this calming effect and she started working with me to find ways to deal with, manage, and reduce my stress. For the first six months or so, I'd go and visit with her once a week. I actually looked forward to the sessions - knowing that I was making progress and with her help am getting back to where I wanted and needed to be. Highly recommended!
