They offer knowledge, expertise, and wisdom gained from decades of experience working with birthing women and their families, and it is so evident in the quality of care they offer. With our every question or concern, Lisa Marie and Richard showed immense insight, intuition, respect, and nuance. What I found profoundly unique and powerful in working with Sacred Journey is how deeply they emphasized and encouraged my own sense of self-trust and empowerment as the mother of my baby. They displayed such reverence to my own motherly intuitions beginning at our very first prenatal meeting, through our birth experience, and within our postpartum season as well. I truly cannot say enough about the blessings these two humans are to not only the mothers they work with, but the entire family of the birthing woman as well! I highly recommend any family who is desiring an empowered, supported, informed, and beautiful pregnancy and birth experience to work with Sacred Journey Midwifery.

However, they never got back to me about why they decided to terminate care with me at 36 weeks. I think it's time to write a review and not feel bad about it. I'm only providing my honest review. I was expecting my fourth child and was over the moon excited to find out I was having a girl after 3 boys. I had always had textbook pregnancies and really desired to have a home birth. After tons of research online, I found Lisa and Richard. They started off really nice, and even built rapport with my kids. My kids always looked forward to them coming. When I was displaced temporarily due to mold in my house, the midwives communicated that it would not be a big deal and that they would work with me to deliver somewhere else. I trusted their words. During my care, they often showed up late (which I didn't love because we had young kids, but I understood the nature of their work and never complained about that) and were very negligent with me regarding lab work and even gestational diabetes testing (they gave me a donated blood sugar device that was missing pieces; I ended up asking my nurse practitioner friend to help me check my blood sugar levels and she was shocked that Lisa and Richard just gave me a hand-me-down medical device with no clear instructions and missing pieces). Yet, despite all this, I never once complained and went along with everything. My husband and I were also polite, forgiving and very cordial with them. Near the end of my pregnancy, while my mother was dying from cancer, and while I was still displaced, I asked them a financial question. I wanted them to clarify some numbers with me. Instead I got a text saying they were going to discontinue working with me because we were not a good fit. No further explanation. After several attempts to reach them, they wrote back and said, "We're at a birth." At 36 weeks, I was living in a hotel, my mom was dying, and I didn't know where I was going to deliver my child. Traumatized and stressed out would be an understatement. To this day, I still do not know their reasoning for discontinuing care that late into my pregnancy. At that point, I was panicked about my next steps. I was told that if I had gone to a hospital, I would have been treated as a high risk patient due to the lack of documented care I was given. I ended up going with a birth center who took really good care of me. Everything ended up working out. I sometimes think back to those events and I wonder if they were racist or prejudiced against me/my family. All my personal contacts who used them were upper middle class white families. In fact, they were midwives for my white neighbor who lived right behind me, I am a Southeast Asian woman. The people I knew who used them drove nice cars, and had fancy homes. Even though we lived in a good neighborhood and my husband had a good job, we didn't drive a nice car and our home was not fancy. Perhaps they looked down on us because we didn't "appear" to have money. Other times, I wonder if Lisa Marie was too proud or immature to have anyone question her. Maybe I offended her because I simply asked questions and maybe she felt threatened. Well, business is business and medical care is medical care. I highly do not recommend these people. They lack integrity and professionalism. After this horrific experience with them, I went on to have another baby, but I had stopped pursuing a home birth and just delivered at a birth center.

I found Labor of Love by doing some of my own research online. And thank God I did! My doula,…read moreKaren, was my rock throughout my labor and was 100,000 percent amazing--I'll definitely be working with her for my second! A little backstory: I was overwhelmed and so nervous about finding "the one" person to be a part of the most important event of my life. After doing my research and reading through all these bios, I honestly was left feeling overwhelmed, especially knowing how indecisive I can be. I knew I just had to trust my intuition and my gut on this one! After looking at Karen's bio on their website, I had such a good feeling. Staci (the owner), who was super friendly and professional, helped me get connected with Karen, and I booked an interview right away! Karen was so sweet and asked me about my pregnancy experience so far. We discussed how I wanted my birth to go and any concerns I had. There wasn't any pressure to hire her, and it just felt like she was already invested in me, like I was already family. I even had her video chat with my husband to make sure we both felt comfortable and vibed well together--and we sure did! Overall, Karen ended up being the perfect balance of knowledge, experience, and professionalism. It was the most perfect amount of care I could have asked for. She was also such an advocate for my birth plan to work out. Before, during, and after my labor and birth, she was always naturally in tune with what I needed. She was never overbearing, worked so well with my husband, and gave him space to be a part of my support team as well. I am so grateful to have come across Labor of Love

My experience with Labor of Love was almost two years ago now but continues to upset me when thinking back on my experience. We hired Lauren as our doula, who made it clear she expected us to go far past my due date as a first time mom. While it's possible for that to happen, it didn't in my case. At 39 weeks and at 5am while in active labor and getting ready to head to the hospital, she let us know she had Covid. Her backup was Karen, who I wish we hired to begin with as she is far more caring and professional. Though unfortunately our experience still fell short and we ultimately delivered without Karen present. We were left feeling like we invested a lot of emotion and money into this process with ultimately no help. Staci has been incredibly rude to us since then and even revoked our access to watch her training videos, sending me a link to pay her once again when wanting to rewatch for our now second baby on the way. Karen herself even recommended we ask for a partial refund due to our experience, but Staci lacks the professionalism and courtesy to her clients. Truly mindblowing that she revoked access to the training videos after we had already paid for them. I would stay far away and recommend a more experienced and caring doula group.

Prior to class, we had a group WhatsApp which made it so easy to communicate and get introduced to each other. She always equipped me with what to say to our pediatrician and together we really helped my baby thrive. I saw Dawnita both at my home and her clinic a few times and both experiences were great her scheduler Shawna was also extremely responsive and helpful. She works with Dawnita and has so much experience and expertise that I have relied on her for questions anytime. And Shawn is so on top of her game that she will work you in to Dawnita's schedule if needed, even though Dawnita is so sought after. I found out we could do a prenatal lactation appointment, which I was excited about because everyone tells you to get a million different things and spend a ton of money on breastfeeding products and you don't know what to actually get. On top of it, you go to the hospital preparing for labor but no one really prepares you for once the baby comes! So I wanted to get some guidance on how to breastfeed in the hospital as well. We read reviews for a bunch of different lactation specialists and I honestly thought that the reviews for Dawnita and Shawn were almost too good to be true. I even asked her if these were incentivized and she said absolutely not. They are just a testament to who she truly is, which is clear once you get to work with her. My experience at the hospital with breastfeeding was not good, which I understand is many Women's experience. I got conflicting messages and no real help. Then i was tossed out on my butt to figure it out alone at home (the nurse legit said she wouldnt answer my question and said I have to figure it out myself because i had signed the discharge paperwork). I left in a complete panic that I would not be able to take care of my baby. I have hyper sensitive nipples so I was in a ton of pain (felt like super fun razorblades). Everyone kept saying it was the baby's latch, etc. No one gave validation to what I was feeling with my sensitivity. I sent a panicked email to Shawn and Dawnita before we even left the hospital (so glad I has established that relationship so I had a lifeline), and they got me in for a virtual appointment that very day we got back from the hospital - on top of it, they even scheduled me for an at home appointment the very next day too so I wouldn't panic. Our virtual appointment got me through that fear day one - my partner was holding an iPad up to my boobs while I tried to nurse my baby (looking back, i can only laugh). Dawnita never made me feel rushed or crazy. Dawnita and Shawn walked us through the next number of weeks and made me feel empowered during every dark moment and brought confidence. When Dawnita walks into your house, she glows. And somehow she always finds a way to make you feel better about yourself - even when you're barefoot in a nightgown with milk stains, unshowered, no makeup, and your hair a mess. But more importantly, I'm now six weeks in and my baby is completely thriving. In fact, she gains more than the expected weight. Dawnita does baby weigh ins (so fun), weighted feeds, answers crazy questions (even if not directly to breastfeeding - like helping with baby's first bath), and guides you through YOUR problems meeting you where you are at! She helped evaluate my sensitive nipples, checked the baby's latch, took away my fears about ties (because everyone raises this), and gave me tools for what I needed - including nipple shields and ways to increase my milk supply without going overboard. She also reassured me and provided solace every time someone else made me fearful. I also love that she's minimal so you don't have to buy a bunch of stuff! While other people are taking supplements and doing lots of things, she doesn't sell you things if you don't need them!! She also doesn't judge if you decide not to breastfeed, which I find to be so important. No more shaming mamas!! Speaking of which, everyone always wanted to tell me that my diet and other things were the cause for any discomfort my baby was going through and Dawnita always made me see that it wasn't the case!! I could go on about Dawnita and Shawn forever, but they changed our journey and I'm so grateful that they helped us through the tough road of breastfeeding. One sidenote. Do not let cost and money stand in your way. Dawnita works through the Lactation Network and they work with your insurance so that you have no co-pay. Plus, she travels anywhere in Orange County to meet you at your house (because who wants to travel after having a baby?!)!! I think people like Dawnita and Shawn who work through the Lactation Network to help moms are angels on this earth.
