Conservatives mock the mental acuity of progressives who in turn wish nothing but a short lifespan for those on the right that they disagree with. Cable news for their part has become an unapologetic bread and circuses echo chamber on both sides offering a safe haven for those never wishing to be troubled by any alternative perspective. In this environment, mainstream conservative magazine, The National Review is almost quaint in it's mission to fully articulate the "conservative" viewpoint with facts and rationale that requires no vitriol or finger pointing. Founder (and human thesaurus) William F. Buckley looked for reason over rancor in seeking the reasonable middle where consensus could be established -- a point-of-view that would now see his legacy all but expunged by the fire breathers on the Right and roundly dismissed as a privileged anachronism on the Left. As a result, these extreme times have not been kind to The National Review and their liberal counterpart,The New Republic where circulation has cratered as partisans on both sides seek out podcasts and YouTube talking heads who speak directly to their preconceived notions. I see from the first two reviews of The Villager that their editorial policies don't please everybody. I don't think full-page tobacco ads are appropriate either, but I know they have to keep an eye on their bottom line, and the advertising revenue pays for publishing and distribution. The paper has clearly been successful; for my neighborhood, it's now spun off into the "East Villager;" they also publish the "Downtown Express," "The Gay City News," and "Chelsea Now." What I'm mainly responding to is they've kept their finger on the pulse of the neighborhood, so to speak. They have features like "Clayton's Page," run by videographer/photographer Clayton Patterson, and the paper is full of slice-of-life photos that other publications don't have time for. They've been around since 1933--longer than the sold-out VOICE--and have managed to stay topical and in touch with their readership.

what memories of the once a week pennysaver flyer mag being dropped by the dozens in buildings…read morelobby. the pennysaver mag was where i could see all the use cars , boats , appliances , bikes , etc , for sale by owner advertised on basically every page , along with the local businesses including the fish market , bakery, butcher shop and even the funeral palor(creepy). it was a free one a week rag but everyone read it just like the daily newspaper. i never purchased a car or boat , or antyhing due to the pennysaver but i did enjoy highlighting which use car i was going to buy for 1500 bucks while only have 5 bucks in my pocket if i was lucky enough. the pennysavers fit in perfectly for that time a bunch of years ago and if i happen to come across one time to time then its just fine and dandy with me.

The weekly paper is particularly good at following the various immigration bills and what is happening in Congress on Irish affairs. The subscription rate is reasonable given all the timely information each week. I had to take away one star because the Green Card immigration "advice" column is not written by an attorney and makes lots of errors and gives out bad advice from time to time (of course, if you are not an attorney you don't know whether the advice is reliable or not!).
